Tick control in Rosebank is mostly about the brown dog tick and the places it breeds: kennels, walls, paving cracks and shady corners where dogs rest. We treat those areas with residual products, check the house for ticks that have climbed indoors, and work alongside your vet's treatment of the dogs so the cycle stops.
Why ticks are a problem for Rosebank dog owners
The parks and green spaces around Rosebank, Zoo Lake among them, are heavily used by dogs, and the older suburbs have plenty of long grass along verges, overgrown corners and shaded garden edges. A dog brings home a few ticks from a walk; if conditions are right, those ticks drop off, lay eggs in the garden and a few weeks later the yard has its own population. The brown dog tick is unusual in that it can complete its whole life cycle around a kennel or even inside a house, climbing walls and hiding in cracks, curtains and the frames of dog beds.
Ticks are most active in the warmer, wetter months, but brown dog ticks sheltering in buildings can keep going through winter. In this area we see them most in homes with several dogs, outdoor kennels against a wall, and gardens with deep shade under old trees.
Why it matters
Beyond the irritation, ticks can carry biliary and other tick-borne diseases that make dogs seriously ill, and people do get bitten too. If your dog becomes listless, stops eating or has pale gums after a tick bite, see a vet the same day. Our job is the environment; your vet's job is the animal. Both are needed.
Where we look in a Rosebank garden
- Kennels, dog beds and the walls immediately around them, including cracks in the plaster.
- Under verandahs, decks and steps where dogs lie in the shade.
- Long grass and groundcover along boundary walls and around the compost.
- Paving joints and the gap where paving meets the wall.
- Indoors: around the dog's sleeping spot, skirting boards, curtains and door frames.
How we treat ticks
Inspection first. We find where the ticks are concentrated, which tells us whether it is a garden problem, a kennel problem or a house problem.
Targeted residual treatment. We apply an odourless, non-staining residual product to kennels, walls, cracks, shaded resting areas and the edges of the lawn. Inside, we treat the cracks and crevices around sleeping areas.
Dogs at the same time. Arrange tick treatment with your vet for the same week. Treating the garden while the dogs are still carrying ticks, or the dogs while the garden is full of them, leaves half the problem in place.
Follow-up for heavy cases. Eggs hatch over several weeks, so a second treatment is often needed for a severe infestation around kennels.
Keep pets and children off treated areas until dry. Normal tick treatments do not need you to move out.
Ticks on people
Most of the ticks we deal with in Rosebank gardens prefer dogs, but they will bite people, especially children who play on the lawn or sit on the floor near the dog's bed. Remove an attached tick by gripping it close to the skin with fine tweezers and pulling steadily, without twisting or squeezing the body. Keep an eye on the bite for a week or two, and see a doctor if you develop a fever, a rash or a dark scab at the bite site.
A common misunderstanding
Many owners assume a tick collar or tablet means the garden is protected. It protects the dog from attached ticks, but it does nothing for the thousands of eggs and larvae already in the cracks around a kennel. When a household keeps finding ticks despite treating the dogs, it is almost always the environment.
A local tip
Move the dog bed or kennel at least a hand's width off the wall, and fill the cracks in the plaster behind it. Brown dog ticks climb upwards to lay eggs, and the junction between a kennel and a wall is where we find the biggest clusters in these older gardens.
What tick control costs, and why
The cost is set by the size of the garden, how many areas need treating, whether the inside of the house is involved, and whether a follow-up treatment is needed. A small garden with one kennel is a small job; a large property with several dogs and ticks indoors takes much more. Our pest control prices in Johannesburg show the guide price. If you found two ticks on your dog after a walk, a vet treatment is probably all you need; it is when they turn up on walls that you need us.

Questions we get asked
How much does tick control cost?
It depends on the size of the garden, how many areas need treating and whether the house is involved. A small garden with one kennel costs much less than a large property with ticks indoors.
Can ticks live inside my house?
Brown dog ticks can. They climb walls and hide in cracks, curtains and around dog beds, and can breed indoors if they are not dealt with.
Is the tick treatment safe for my dogs?
Yes, once it is dry. Keep the dogs off treated areas until then, and treat them separately with a product your vet recommends.
Why do I keep finding ticks even though my dog is treated?
Because the eggs and larvae are in the garden and around the kennel. Treating the environment as well as the dog is what stops the cycle.
When are ticks worst in Johannesburg?
In the warmer, wetter months, from about spring to late summer, although brown dog ticks sheltering in buildings can stay active through winter.
What should I do before you arrive?
Cut long grass along the walls, move dog beds and kennels away from the wall if you can, and book your dogs in with the vet for tick treatment the same week.
