Pest control in Cyrildene for restaurants, shops and homes

Cyrildene is home to Johannesburg's Chinatown, with restaurants and grocers packed along one street and homes behind them. Here's how we keep both pest-free.

Pest control in Cyrildene centres on its food businesses: German cockroaches in restaurant kitchens, rats around refuse and storerooms, flies in summer and pantry pests in dry goods. The homes and flats behind the main street deal with the same pests spilling over. We set up scheduled programmes with service records for businesses and treat homes as needed.

Cyrildene's Chinatown

Cyrildene is a suburb in the east of Johannesburg, close to Bruma and Observatory. It's best known for Derrick Avenue, the heart of the city's newer Chinatown, lined with restaurants, grocery shops, bakeries and small businesses. Behind the main street, Cyrildene is a residential suburb of older houses and some blocks of flats, on slopes that rise towards the Observatory ridge.

A concentration of food businesses on one street means a lot of kitchens, storerooms, deliveries and refuse in a small area. That's exactly what cockroaches, rats and flies need. Residential streets nearby are close enough for these pests to spread, especially rats.

The pests that matter in Cyrildene

German cockroaches

German cockroaches are the main concern in restaurant kitchens. They come in on deliveries and in boxes, hide in warm spots behind equipment, in hinges and motor housings, and breed fast. Gel bait placed in those spots is the most effective treatment, and regular visits keep them from building up again. Our cockroach control for the Rosebank and eastern suburbs page explains the method.

Rats

Rats feed from refuse areas, back lanes and storerooms, and nest in gaps behind buildings. Lockable, tamper-resistant bait stations along the outside of buildings and in refuse areas, with traps inside storerooms where bait isn't suitable, keep them under control. Proofing doors and drains makes a big difference.

Flies

House flies breed in refuse and food waste, particularly in summer. In food businesses, they're a hygiene risk. We treat resting areas, advise on refuse handling and can recommend fly control units. See fly control in the Rosebank area.

Pantry pests

Grocery shops and restaurants that store rice, flour, noodles, dried goods and spices can attract pantry beetles and moths. Good stock rotation, sealed containers and regular inspection catch them early, and affected stock needs to be removed.

Homes nearby

Houses and flats behind the main street see rats in roofs and gardens, cockroaches in kitchens and ants in summer. We treat homes the same way: inspection first, then targeted baits and treatments.

Programmes for food businesses

For restaurants, grocers and bakeries, we recommend a monthly programme: inspection of kitchens and storerooms, gel baiting, servicing of numbered bait stations, and a written service record for each visit. Health inspectors look for exactly this. We try to fit around trading hours. Treatments are odourless and placed away from food surfaces; staff and residents don't need to leave, but treated areas should be kept clear of children and pets until dry.

Signs to look for in a kitchen or shop

  • Small brown cockroaches running when you switch the light on at night, or shed skins and pepper-like droppings in hinges and corners.
  • A musty, oily smell in cupboards and behind equipment, which comes with a heavy cockroach population.
  • Gnawed sacks, torn packaging or rice spilled along the base of a wall in the storeroom.
  • Dark, greasy rub marks along skirting and around pipes where rats run.
  • Small beetles or webbing in bags of flour, rice or dried goods.

Seeing any of these is a reason to call before the next inspection, not after it.

Inspections and reports

Some food businesses need an independent pest report for a landlord, an audit or a buyer. We carry out entomological inspections and pest reports in Johannesburg, with written findings and recommendations.

The mistake food businesses make

Spraying the kitchen at closing time with a household insecticide. It kills a few cockroaches you can see, drives the rest deeper into the equipment and walls, and can leave residue on food surfaces. Gel bait in the right spots works better and is safer in a kitchen.

A Cyrildene tip

Break down cardboard boxes from deliveries and get them out of the kitchen and storeroom the same day. German cockroaches often arrive in delivery boxes, and the corrugated cardboard gives them perfect hiding and breeding space.

What it costs and why

For businesses, the cost depends on the size of the premises, the number of kitchens and storerooms, the pests involved and how often we visit. A small grocer costs less than a large restaurant. For homes, it depends on the pest and the size of the house. Guide "from" prices are on every service page, and our pest control prices for Johannesburg page lists them all. We'll quote after a site visit.

Cyrildene is covered by our Rosebank pest control hub, and we also serve neighbouring Bruma.

Combat Pest Control is owned and operated by Jason van Heerden, who has worked in pest control for 25 years. SAPCA registration and Department of Agriculture registration under Act 36 are both in place. We aim for service within 24 hours, and general treatments carry a 3-month guarantee. Questions we get asked

How much does a pest control contract cost for a restaurant?

It depends on the size of the premises, the number of kitchens and storerooms, and how often we visit. A small grocer costs less than a large restaurant. Guide prices are on our price page.

Is cockroach gel safe in a restaurant kitchen?

Yes. It's placed in cracks, hinges and equipment housings, away from food surfaces, in tiny amounts.

Do you provide service records for health inspections?

Yes. Each visit is recorded with what was checked and treated, so you have a full history.

Can you treat outside trading hours?

We'll try to. Let us know your hours when you book.

What should I do with stock that has pantry beetles?

Remove and discard affected stock, clean the shelves, and store dry goods in sealed containers. We can inspect and treat the storage area.
