Cockroach control in Rosebank depends on the species. Small German cockroaches breed indoors in kitchens and are cleared with gel baits placed where they hide; large American cockroaches come up from drains and are treated at the source. We identify yours, treat the harbourage, and follow up until the activity stops.
Where Rosebank cockroaches come from
Rosebank packs a lot of kitchens into a small area: restaurants, coffee shops, hotel kitchens, food courts, office canteens and hundreds of apartments. Behind them runs a shared network of drains, grease traps and refuse rooms. German cockroaches travel in on deliveries, cardboard boxes and secondhand appliances, then spread through shared plumbing. American cockroaches live in the sewer and stormwater system and come up through floor drains and open manholes, especially on hot, humid summer nights after a thunderstorm.
Know your cockroach
German cockroach
About the length of a fingernail, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. It lives indoors, close to warmth, food and moisture: fridge and dishwasher motors, the hinges of kitchen units, kettle bases, microwave vents and the seals of cold rooms. It breeds very quickly, and if you are seeing them in daylight, the population is already large. This is the restaurant and apartment problem.
American cockroach
Large, reddish-brown and able to fly short distances in warm weather. It lives in drains, manholes, basements and refuse areas and wanders indoors rather than living there. It is common in older buildings with ageing drain covers, and in the inner-city blocks to the south.
Our article on common cockroaches in Johannesburg has more on telling them apart.
Signs of a hidden infestation
- Cockroaches seen in daylight, which usually means the hiding places are already full.
- Tiny black specks like ground pepper in cupboard hinges, drawer runners and behind the fridge.
- Brown, purse-shaped egg cases in the corners of cupboards and under appliances.
- Shed skins near the kettle, toaster or microwave.
- A sour, oily smell in a closed cupboard or a little-used storeroom.
In an office or restaurant, check the staff kitchen's coffee machine, the back of the bar fridges and the dishwashing area first. Warm motors and constant moisture make those spots the first to fill up.
Our approach
For German cockroaches, we place small spots of gel bait directly into the cracks and crevices where they shelter. They feed, return to hiding and pass the bait on to others, which is what reaches the population you cannot see. We avoid spraying over the bait, because spray repels them from it. Heavy infestations get a follow-up visit to catch the young that hatch from egg cases after the first treatment.
For American cockroaches, we treat drains, manholes, grease traps and the outside perimeter with odourless, non-staining residual products, and advise on drain covers, traps and seals that keep them below ground.
For businesses, a scheduled monitoring contract keeps the pressure on, with a written service record for health inspections and franchise audits. Visits are planned around trading hours.
Flats and complexes
In a block of flats, German cockroaches move between units through pipe ducts, electrical conduits and gaps behind kitchen units. Treating one unit gives relief, but if the neighbours are untreated the problem returns within weeks. We recommend the body corporate treats the building together, including the refuse room, which is often where it all starts.
What most people get wrong
Using a fogger or "bomb". It drives German cockroaches deeper into walls and appliances, can spread them into neighbouring units, and leaves a residue on every surface while doing very little to the egg cases. A close second is spraying a supermarket aerosol over gel bait that has been placed professionally, which stops the bait working.
A Rosebank tip
Break down delivery boxes outside and get them out of the kitchen the same day. Corrugated cardboard is a favourite hiding place for German cockroaches, and in a busy restaurant area it is one of the main ways they are carried from one business to the next.
What cockroach control costs, and why
The size of the infestation matters more than the size of the property. A small kitchen with light activity needs one treatment and perhaps a follow-up; a heavily infested flat or restaurant kitchen needs more bait, more time and a second visit. Whole buildings are priced by the number of units and common areas, and businesses on a contract by visit frequency. Our pest control price guide for Johannesburg shows where cockroach treatments start.

Questions we get asked
How much does cockroach treatment cost in Rosebank?
It depends on how heavy the infestation is and what is being treated: a lightly affected kitchen costs much less than a heavily infested restaurant or a whole block of flats. See our price guide, and we quote after an inspection.
How long until the cockroaches are gone?
German cockroaches usually drop sharply within one to two weeks of gel baiting. Heavy infestations need a follow-up visit for the young that hatch later.
Do I need to empty my kitchen cupboards?
For gel baiting, usually not. We place bait in cracks and hinges, not on shelves. For a spray treatment we may ask you to clear specific cupboards.
Is gel bait safe around children and pets?
Yes, it is placed in tiny amounts deep in cracks and hinges where children and pets cannot reach it.
Why do I see big cockroaches only in summer?
American cockroaches live in drains and become far more active in hot, humid weather, particularly after summer storms. Treating drains and fitting good covers keeps them down.
Can you treat our restaurant without closing?
Yes. We plan visits around your trading hours and use treatments suited to food areas, and contract clients get a written record for inspections.
Will treating only my flat solve the problem?
It helps, but if neighbouring units are infested the cockroaches return through shared ducts. Treating the whole building is far more reliable.
