Pest control in Soweto works best when the whole yard is treated, not just one room. We inspect the main house, any backyard rooms and the outside areas, find out where rats, cockroaches, bed bugs or termites are living and feeding, then treat the source and show you how to keep them out.
What makes Soweto different
Soweto is one of the biggest and most densely built parts of Johannesburg. In older sections like Orlando and Meadowlands you'll find the original four-roomed houses, most of them extended over the decades with extra rooms, new roofs and garages. Newer areas such as Protea Glen are full of smaller modern homes and RDP houses. Almost everywhere, families have built backyard rooms that are rented out, and many streets have a spaza shop, a tavern or a small takeaway operating from a home.
That density shapes the pest problem. Homes sit close together, boundary walls are shared, and one yard's rubbish, chicken run or stored maize meal feeds pests that end up next door. Treating one room while the rest of the yard stays untouched rarely lasts. Where we can, we look at the whole stand, and where a problem clearly runs across several yards, we'll suggest that neighbours treat at the same time.
The pests we're called out for most
Rats and mice
Brown rats burrow under paving, outside toilets, sheds and rubble piles, and come up through drains. Mice get into kitchens and stock rooms through gaps you'd barely notice. Both move indoors when Highveld winter nights turn cold. We use lockable, tamper-resistant bait stations outside and traps indoors, which matters in homes full of children and dogs. Cockroaches
German cockroaches breed in warm kitchens, fridges and stoves, and they travel between the main house and backyard rooms in boxes, bags and appliances. American cockroaches come up from drains and manholes in summer. Gel baits placed where they hide do far more than a spray can. Our page on getting rid of cockroaches in Soweto homes and shops explains how.
Termites
Soweto sits on Highveld soil that suits termites well. Harvester termites strip lawns and bare yards in dry winters, while subterranean termites work into door frames, window frames and roof timbers, especially where an extension was built without any soil treatment. They're the pest that does the most expensive damage, so it pays to know the signs. See our detailed page on termite control in Soweto.
Bed bugs
Bed bugs arrive in second-hand beds, couches and suitcases, and they spread fastest where people share rooms or tenants move in and out of backyard rooms. They hide in mattress seams, bed bases and cracks in the wall. Treatment needs preparation and usually a follow-up visit; our bed bug treatment in Soweto page covers what to expect.
Fleas, ticks and flies
Plenty of Soweto homes keep dogs in the yard, and that brings fleas into sandy patches and under the stoep, and brown dog ticks into kennels and wall cracks. In summer, flies breed in bins, dumping spots and chicken runs. Each of these needs the yard treated, not only the house.
Businesses in Soweto
Spaza shops, taverns, takeaways, hair salons, crèches, schools, churches and clinics all have their own pest pressure. A spaza shop full of maize meal, bread and sugar is a magnet for mice and cockroaches, and a tavern's bottle store and kitchen can carry both. For businesses we offer once-off treatments and scheduled monitoring contracts with a written service record for every visit, which is what a health inspector wants to see.
How we work
- Inspection first. We look at the house, backyard rooms, roof space where we can reach it, drains and the yard itself, and confirm what pest it is.
- Treatment matched to the pest. Gel baits for cockroaches, ant baits carried back to the nest, bait stations and traps for rodents, odourless, non-staining residual sprays where they suit, and soil treatment or baiting for termites.
- Proofing and advice. We show you the gaps, the food sources and the hiding spots to deal with.
- Follow-up. Bed bugs, heavy cockroach infestations and termites often need a return visit.
You don't need to move out for normal insect treatments. Keep children and pets away from treated surfaces until they've dried.
The mistake we see most often
Buying a strong poison from a street vendor and spreading it around the house. Unlabelled poisons are dangerous to children and pets, and loose powders and pellets often just push pests into the next room or the neighbour's yard. Loose rat poison is especially risky in a yard with dogs and small children. Registered products, applied in the right place, are both safer and more effective.
A Soweto tip
Clear building rubble and stacked bricks away from the walls once an extension is finished. Those piles shelter rats, scorpions and spiders, and buried offcuts and timber feed termites for years.
What pest control costs in Soweto, and why
The price depends on the pest, the size of the property and how many structures are involved. A cockroach treatment in one kitchen is a modest job. Treating a main house plus three backyard rooms takes more product and time, and termite work depends on the length of the walls and how much timber is affected. Each service page shows a guide "from" price, and our pest control price guide sets them out together. If a small problem is something you can sort out yourself, we'll say so.

Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost in Soweto?
It depends on the pest and how many rooms or buildings need treating. A single kitchen for cockroaches costs far less than a whole yard with backyard rooms, or a termite job. We give a firm quote after inspecting, and our price guide shows where each service starts.
Do you treat backyard rooms as well as the main house?
Yes, and we recommend it. Cockroaches, bed bugs and rodents move between the house and the rooms behind it, so treating only one usually means the problem comes back.
Can you help a spaza shop or tavern?
Yes. We treat shops, taverns and takeaways for rodents, cockroaches and flies, and we can set up a monitoring contract with a service record for each visit.
Is it safe for my children and dogs?
Yes, when it's done properly. Rodent bait stays in lockable stations they can't open, and for sprays you just keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry.
Do I have to leave the house during treatment?
No. For normal insect treatments you can stay home. Only gas fumigation, which is rarely needed in homes, requires the sealed area to be empty until it's cleared.
Should my neighbours treat at the same time?
If the problem is rats, cockroaches or bed bugs and your homes are close together, it helps a lot. Pests cross shared walls and yards, so treating together makes the result last longer.
What should I do before you arrive?
Clear the kitchen counters and the cupboards under the sink, tie up the dogs, and don't spray anything yourself in the day or two before. Sprays scatter pests and make them harder to find.
