Pest control in Melrose

A restaurant precinct, quiet family streets and a wetland, all within a short walk. Each part of Melrose brings its own pests, and some homes get all three.

Pest control in Melrose has two sides: the restaurants, hotels and apartments of Melrose Arch, and the older homes and complexes around it. We treat cockroaches and rodents in commercial kitchens, mosquitoes near the bird sanctuary, ants, roof rats and termites in residential gardens, and set up monitoring contracts for businesses that need records.

Melrose, old and new

Melrose sits between Illovo, Birdhaven, Highlands North and the M1 highway. The residential part is an established suburb of family homes on decent-sized stands, with mature trees, plus townhouse complexes and newer developments. Next to it is Melrose Arch, a mixed-use precinct of offices, hotels, apartments, restaurants and shops built around pedestrian streets. Melrose also has its bird sanctuary, a wetland with reeds and open water, and James and Ethel Gray Park.

So in a short walk you move from a commercial food hub to quiet residential streets to a wetland. Each brings its own pests, and properties on the edges of each zone can get a bit of all three.

Restaurants, hotels and apartments

A busy restaurant precinct means a lot of food waste, deliveries and warm kitchens. German cockroaches arrive in boxes and live in kitchen equipment, and rodents follow the refuse areas and basements. For commercial kitchens we use gel baits in hiding places, lockable rodent stations in refuse rooms and basements, and scheduled monitoring with a written record of each visit. Apartment buildings benefit from the same building-wide approach, because cockroaches move along shared plumbing and service ducts. Office tenants in the precinct deal with the same German cockroaches in staff kitchens, usually behind the dishwasher and the coffee machine. Hotels add one more risk: bed bugs that arrive in guests' luggage, which need fast, discreet treatment of the affected room and the rooms on either side.

Mosquitoes near the wetland

Homes close to the bird sanctuary and the park see more mosquitoes on summer evenings. The wetland is part of the landscape and isn't something we treat, but much of the biting comes from mosquitoes bred within a few metres of your door, in gutters, pot saucers, unused water features and the cover of a pool. We find and treat breeding spots on your property and the shady resting areas around the house. Our mosquito treatments in Johannesburg page explains more.

Older homes and gardens

Roof rats

Mature trees and creepers lead rats onto roofs, particularly in winter. We bait in lockable stations around the garden and trap in the roof space, then show you where to seal. Pool pump houses and garden sheds are common nesting spots, so we check those too.

Termites

Subterranean termites go for timber floors, door frames and built-in cupboards in older homes, and for buried stumps and garden timber. Harvester termites thin out lawns in dry winters. We identify the species first; structural termite treatment comes with a 5-year guarantee and certificate. Read more about termite treatment in the Rosebank area.

Ants

Ants come in from irrigated gardens and paving before summer rain. Baits that foragers carry home are far more effective than spraying the trail.

Fleas and ticks

Dog owners who walk near the sanctuary and the park bring ticks home in summer, and fleas build up in pet beds and shady corners of the garden. House, garden and pets need to be treated together.

A Melrose tip

If you live near the sanctuary, walk your garden after every big storm and tip out anything holding water: buckets, toys, saucers, the folds of a pool cover. Mosquitoes can go from egg to adult in about a week in summer, so a weekly habit keeps up with them.

What people get wrong

Restaurant owners sometimes rely on a cleaning company's fogging or spraying after hours. It looks thorough but rarely reaches cockroaches inside equipment and wall voids, and residue on prep surfaces is a problem in its own right. Targeted baiting with proper records is safer and works better. The other mistake is blaming the wetland for every mosquito and doing nothing at home, when the containers in your own garden are where most of them hatch.

What it costs and why

Commercial contracts are priced on the number of kitchens, stations, floors and visits. A house is priced on its size and the pests involved: a general insect treatment is the simplest job, termite work depends on the building perimeter, and mosquito treatment on the garden area. This page shows a guide "from" price, and the full list is on our pest control prices page. We quote after an inspection.

Melrose is part of our Rosebank area, summarised on the Rosebank pest control page, and there's a separate page for Illovo next door.

Questions we get asked

Can you treat mosquitoes near the Melrose bird sanctuary?

We treat breeding spots and resting areas on your property, not the wetland itself. Most biting mosquitoes breed close to the house, so this makes a real difference.

Do you service restaurants in Melrose Arch?

Yes. We work around trading hours with gel baits, lockable stations and a written record of every visit.

How much does a restaurant pest control contract cost?

It depends on the number of kitchens, stations and visits per month. We quote after inspecting the site.

Are fogging treatments good for kitchens?

Not usually. They rarely reach cockroaches inside equipment and leave residue on surfaces. Targeted gel baiting works better.

How do I know if termites are in my garden or my house?

Bare lawn patches with small holes mean harvester termites; mud tubes on walls or hollow timber mean subterranean termites. A photo on WhatsApp helps us tell.

Can I stay home during treatment?

Yes. Treatments are odourless; just keep little ones and pets clear of sprayed areas until they've dried.
