Pest control in Mayfair

Extended family homes, shops with storerooms and the railway line along one side. Mayfair's pests use the joins between old and new, and the lanes behind.

Pest control in Mayfair covers family homes, extended houses, flats and the shops and wholesalers on its trading streets. The pests that matter most are rats from the railway reserve and back lanes, German cockroaches, mice in storerooms, flies and ants in summer, and termites in older homes. We inspect, treat the source and help you keep them out.

Mayfair's mix of homes and trade

Mayfair sits west of Fordsburg, just outside the city centre, with the railway line along one side. It is a multicultural suburb with a strong community life: mosques, madrassas, schools, family homes and a busy trading strip of shops, wholesalers, restaurants and small offices. Many older houses have been extended over the years with extra rooms, upper floors or flats at the back, and some stands now carry a shop at the front and a home behind.

Extensions and mixed use are what shape pests here. Each extension adds a join between old and new walls, roofs and floors, which is where rats and termites find a way in. Shops with storerooms bring stock and deliveries close to living space. And the railway reserve, with its long grass and rubble, gives rodents a sheltered corridor to travel along.

Rats and mice

Brown rats are the main rodent here. They burrow along the railway reserve, in back lanes and under outbuildings, and get into homes and storerooms at ground level through gaps under doors, broken air bricks and holes left where pipes were rerouted during building work. Mice are a problem in shop storerooms and pantries from autumn. We use lockable bait stations outside, traps inside where food is stored, and give you a list of gaps to seal. Our page on rat control in the Rosebank area covers the method.

Cockroaches in homes and shops

German cockroaches live in kitchens and travel in grocery boxes, appliances and wholesale stock. In shops and restaurants they settle behind fridges and counters and in electrical boxes. Gel bait is the main tool, with a follow-up for heavy cases. American cockroaches come out of drains and manholes on summer nights; treating the drains and sealing the gaps around pipes keeps them outside.

Termites in older and extended homes

Older houses with timber floors, door frames and roof trusses can carry subterranean termites, and extensions are a common entry point if the new section's foundation was never treated. Watch for mud tubes along walls or inside built-in cupboards, and timber that sounds hollow. We treat the soil around and under the affected area, or bait where drilling isn't practical, with a 5-year guarantee and a certificate. For more, see termite control in Johannesburg.

Flies and ants in summer

Flies build up where food waste sits in bins, especially at restaurants and butcheries. Ants come in from paving and gardens before rain. Better refuse handling deals with most fly problems, and baits taken back to the nest handle ants.

Wholesalers and storerooms

Storerooms full of boxed stock, sacks and pallets are where mice and cockroaches settle unseen. Keep stock on shelving or pallets off the floor and away from the walls, so we can inspect and bait along the edges, and rotate older stock out first. A storeroom that is packed wall to wall is almost impossible to keep clear, however often it is treated.

Fitting in with family and trading life

We can work before shops open or after they close, and in homes we plan around school runs and family routines. Normal insect treatments are odourless and you don't need to leave; little ones and pets should stay away from treated surfaces until they've dried. Shops and restaurants can take a scheduled monitoring contract with a written record of each visit.

A common mistake

Building an extension straight onto the old foundations without a termite pre-treatment or proper sealing where old meets new. It saves a little at the time, but termites and rats often use that join for years afterwards. If you're planning building work, talk to us before the slab goes in.

A Mayfair tip

If your stand backs onto the railway reserve or a lane, keep the strip along that wall clear of rubble, stored building material and long grass. Rats travel along walls under cover, and a clear strip is the simplest barrier you can build.

What it costs and why

Price depends on the size of the property, whether it includes a shop or back rooms, and the pest. A kitchen cockroach treatment is a modest job. A full rodent programme for a home with a storeroom costs more and may need follow-ups. Termite treatment is priced on the building's perimeter and the paving or concrete to be drilled. Guide "from" prices appear on this page and on our Johannesburg pest control price list, and we quote after inspecting.

Questions we get asked

Can you treat my home and shop on the same visit?

Yes. Treating both together makes sense, because pests move between stock rooms and living space.

I'm building an extension. Do I need termite treatment?

It's wise. A soil pre-treatment before the slab goes down stops the new section becoming a way in for termites.

How much does rat control cost for a home near the railway line?

It depends on the size of the stand and the number of stations needed, plus follow-ups. Guide prices are on our prices page; we quote after inspecting.

Big cockroaches come out of the drain at night. What can I do?

Those are American cockroaches. Keep drain covers in place, seal gaps around pipes, and we can treat the drains and manholes.

Will the treatment affect food in my storeroom?

No. We bait and treat cracks, edges and stations rather than spraying stock, and we'll tell you if anything needs to be covered or moved first.

How soon can you come?

We offer service within 24 hours. Call 084 200 2700 to book.
