Pest control in Johannesburg South

Rocky ridges, older semis, big family stands and light industry side by side. The south of Johannesburg has its own mix of pests, and we know where each one comes from.

Pest control in Johannesburg South means dealing with a wider spread of pests than most parts of the city: termites in lawns and old timber, rats and cockroaches in older semis and around industrial yards, and scorpions and spiders near the Klipriviersberg ridges. We inspect first, find the cause, and treat the source rather than the symptom.

What makes the south different

Drive from Rosettenville down to Mondeor and you cross several kinds of property in a few kilometres. Closer to town, Turffontein, Kenilworth and Rosettenville have rows of older houses and semis, many with timber floors, shared walls and small backyards. Further south, Mondeor, Glenvista and Mulbarton are suburbs of family homes on bigger stands, with lawns, pools, rockeries and gardens that run up against rocky hillsides. To the east and north there's light industry, warehouses and yards around areas like Selby, Booysens and City Deep. And through all of it run the Klip River, open veld and the old mine dumps that still mark the edge of the south.

Each of those settings brings its own pests. A complaint we hear in Glenvista is rarely the same as one from a semi in Kenilworth, and a warehouse in Selby has different needs again. That's why every job here starts with a walk around the property, not a standard spray.

The pests we treat most often down south

Termites, in the lawn and in the house

Harvester termites are a real headache on the big lawns of the southern suburbs, especially in dry winters when kikuyu turns into bare, sandy patches. Subterranean termites are the bigger worry in older homes, where original floors, skirting boards and door frames have sat on the same soil for decades. They need completely different treatments, and our page on termite control in Johannesburg South explains both, along with pre-treatment for extensions and the 5-year termite guarantee.

Rats and mice

Roof rats run along boundary walls and trees into the ceilings of older homes, while brown rats burrow along the river, around compost heaps and in industrial yards. When the winter nights turn cold, both move indoors. See our rat treatments in the south for how we bait outside, trap inside and close the gaps.

Cockroaches

German cockroaches live in kitchens, especially in flats, semis and food businesses along the main roads, while large American cockroaches come up from drains and sewer lines in summer. Gel baits clear them far better than spraying. More on getting rid of cockroaches in Johannesburg South.

Scorpions and spiders

Homes that back onto the Klipriviersberg or have big rockeries and retaining walls get far more scorpions than the flat suburbs closer to town. They hide under rocks, paving and pot plants by day and wander into houses on warm evenings. Our scorpion control for ridge-side homes covers what we do and how to make your garden less inviting.

Wood borer, ants, fleas and the rest

Older timber floors and roof trusses attract wood borer as well as termites. Ants march in ahead of the summer storms. Fleas and ticks follow dogs that walk in the veld and the reserve. In summer we also deal with wasps under eaves, bee swarms in wall cavities, and flies around bins and industrial sites.

How we work in the south

An inspection comes first: the house, the roof space where it's safe to get in, the garden and the boundary. We're looking for how the pest gets in, where it shelters and what it's feeding on. Then we treat with products registered for the job: lockable bait stations and traps for rodents, gel baits for cockroaches, ant baits the workers carry back to the nest, odourless, non-staining residual sprays where a barrier is needed, and soil treatments or baiting for termites. For normal insect treatments you don't need to leave home; just keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry.

Businesses, schools and complexes can have a scheduled monitoring contract, with a service record for every visit. That suits food businesses and warehouses in the industrial areas, where an auditor or health inspector will want to see what's been done and when.

One thing people in the south often get wrong

Blaming the neighbour's property and treating only their own. In rows of semis and on stands that back onto veld or the river, pests come from outside your boundary. The fix is to deal with the routes they use: seal the gaps, move wood piles and rubble off the walls, and keep the strip right next to the house clear and dry. Treating without doing that just buys a few quiet weeks.

What pest control costs, and why

The price depends on which pest it is, how big the property is, how far the problem has spread and whether follow-up visits are needed. A cockroach or ant treatment in a house is a modest job. Termite work, wood borer in a whole floor or an industrial site on contract are quoted after an inspection. Each service page shows a guide "from" price, and our Johannesburg pest control prices page sets them out together. If a small problem is something you can sort out yourself, we'll say so.

Suburbs we cover

We work right across the south, from the older suburbs near town to the newer estates further out. Some suburbs have their own pages, including pest control in Mondeor, Glenvista homes and gardens, Rosettenville and Turffontein. For the rest of the city, start with pest control across Johannesburg.

Jason van Heerden runs Combat Pest Control himself and has spent 25 years in the trade. Questions we get asked

How much does pest control cost in Johannesburg South?

It depends on the pest and the property. A standard insect treatment in a house is a modest job, while termites, wood borer or an industrial site cost more and are quoted after an inspection. Our prices page shows guide "from" prices.

Do you come out to Mondeor, Glenvista and the other southern suburbs?

Yes. We cover the whole of Johannesburg South, from Rosettenville, Turffontein and Kenilworth to Mondeor, Glenvista, Mulbarton, Southgate and further out.

Why do I get more scorpions than friends in other suburbs?

Probably because you live near a ridge or have a big rockery. Scorpions shelter under rocks and loose stone by day, so homes near the Klipriviersberg see far more of them.

Do I have to leave the house while you treat?

No, not for normal insect treatments. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they've dried. Only gas fumigation, which is rare for homes, needs the area empty.

Can you service a warehouse or factory on a contract?

Yes. We set up scheduled visits with a written service record for every visit, which is what auditors and health inspectors look for.

What happens if the pests come back after treatment?

General treatments carry a 3-month guarantee, so if the treated pest returns in that time, we come back. Termite treatments carry a 5-year guarantee with a certificate.

Can I just send a photo first?

Yes. WhatsApp us a photo of the insect, droppings or damage and we'll tell you what it is and what it takes to deal with it.
