Pest control in Fourways and surrounds

New estates on old veld, shopping centres with food courts, and plots with horses a few kilometres away. Fourways gets a wider mix of pests than most of Johannesburg.

Pest control in Fourways means dealing with a suburb that was built quickly on open veld. Termites, rats, ants, scorpions and cockroaches all have a head start here. We inspect each property to find where the pests live and how they get in, treat the source, and back the work with a guarantee.

What makes Fourways different

A few decades ago most of this area was grassland, plots and koppies. Today it is security estates, townhouse complexes, office parks and some of the biggest shopping centres in the north, with Dainfern and Lonehill close by and the Jukskei running along the edges. The veld didn't go far. It survives between estates, along the river and out towards Diepsloot and Zandspruit to the north-west, and the insects and rodents that lived in it simply moved next door.

The ground matters too. Much of northern Johannesburg sits on granite, which breaks down into sandy, free-draining soil. Termites tunnel through it easily, mole-rats love it, and it dries out fast in winter, which is exactly what sends harvester termites after the lawn. Add a Highveld summer of afternoon storms, and the pest year in Fourways runs on a fairly predictable clock.

The Fourways pest calendar

  • First summer rains (October to November): flying termites and flying ants pour out of the ground, millipedes start walking, and ant trails appear in kitchens.
  • Mid-summer: wasp nests under eaves and patio roofs, flies around refuse areas, scorpions and spiders active at night, bee swarms looking for a cavity.
  • Autumn into winter: rats and mice move from the veld and gardens into roofs, garages and storerooms. Harvester termites start stripping dry lawns.
  • All year: German cockroaches in kitchens, restaurants and food courts, fish moths in cupboards and boxes, and bed bugs wherever someone has brought them home.

The pests we're called out for most

Termites, both kinds

Subterranean termites follow buried building rubble and timber offcuts into newer homes, and harvester termites leave estate lawns full of bare patches by July. They need different treatments, so identifying which one you have comes first. Our page on termite control in Fourways covers both in detail, including the 5-year guarantee.

Rats and mice

Homes that back onto open ground or the river get rodents first, especially when the veld is cut or burnt in winter. Complexes have the added problem of shared roof spaces. See how we deal with rats in Fourways for the full approach.

Cockroaches

The commercial side of Fourways, with its food courts, restaurants and takeaways, keeps German cockroaches busy all year, and they travel into homes in grocery boxes and second-hand appliances. Our Fourways cockroach treatments rely on gel baits, not fogging.

Ants

Paved courtyards and irrigated gardens are ideal for ant colonies. Before a storm they come indoors for food and shelter. We bait them so the workers carry the bait back to the nest; see ant control for Fourways homes.

Scorpions and spiders

Rocky gardens, retaining walls built from loose stone and the granite koppie at Lonehill are classic scorpion country. Most are harmless, a few are not, and knowing the difference matters. Read about scorpions around Fourways if you're finding them in the house.

Different properties, different problems

Security estates. Big lawns, golf course edges, water features and lots of open space. Harvester termites, moles, ants and scorpions dominate. Estate managers often want one programme for the common areas, with homeowners treating their own houses.

Townhouse complexes. Shared walls, shared roofs and shared refuse rooms. Rodents and cockroaches move from unit to unit, so treating one unit on its own usually just pushes the problem next door. We work with the body corporate on the whole site where we can.

Offices, shops and restaurants. Food businesses need scheduled monitoring with a written service record that an inspector or auditor can check. Office parks mostly need rodent and cockroach control in kitchens, plant rooms and basements.

Plots and smallholdings. Further out, in places like Chartwell, horses, feed stores and outbuildings bring flies, ticks and rodents on a bigger scale, and older farm buildings can have wood borer and termites in roof timber.

How we work

Every job starts with an inspection: inside, outside and, where we can get in, the roof space. We're looking for the cause, whether that's a gap under the eaves, a buried tree stump, a leaking pipe or a compost heap next to the boundary wall. Treatments are odourless and non-staining, and for normal insect work you don't need to leave home; just keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry. Rodent bait stays inside lockable stations. For businesses and estates we offer scheduled visits with service records.

Combat Pest Control is owned and run by Jason van Heerden, SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36 of 1947, with 25 years of experience in pest control. We offer service within 24 hours, and general treatments carry a 3-month guarantee.

A Fourways tip

If your property backs onto veld, a green belt or the river, look at the boundary first. Keep a clear strip along the wall, free of long grass, rubble and stacked timber. It takes away cover for rodents, scorpions and snakes alike, and makes any problem far easier to spot early.

What it costs and why

Price depends on the pest, the size of the property and how established the problem is. A cockroach or ant treatment in a townhouse is a modest job. A termite treatment around a large estate home, or a monitoring contract for a restaurant, is quoted to suit the site after we've seen it. Our pest control price guide shows where each treatment starts, and if something is small enough to sort out yourself, we'll say so.

We cover the whole area, including suburb pages for Dainfern, Lonehill and the industrial side at Kya Sands. To arrange a visit, ring 084 200 2700, or send a photo on WhatsApp and we'll identify the pest for you.

Questions we get asked

How much does pest control cost in Fourways?

It depends on the pest and the property. Ant, cockroach and spider treatments in a home are fairly modest jobs, while termite work and business contracts are quoted after an inspection. Our price guide shows the starting points.

Which areas around Fourways do you cover?

All of them, from Dainfern, Lonehill, Douglasdale and Broadacres to Witkoppen, Kya Sands, Chartwell and the plots further north-west.

Can you treat our whole complex rather than one unit?

Yes, and for rodents and cockroaches it's the better option. We work with the body corporate or managing agent to treat shared roofs, refuse rooms and gardens together.

Do I need to leave home during the treatment?

No. For normal insect and rodent work you can stay. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry. Only gas fumigation needs the area vacated.

Why do we get so many pests in a new estate?

Because the estate was built on veld, and the insects and rodents that lived there are still around the edges. Buried building rubble and young gardens also give termites and ants an easy start.

Do you do monitoring contracts for restaurants and offices?

Yes. We set up scheduled visits, lockable bait stations and a written service record for every visit, which is what health inspectors and auditors ask for.

What if the pests come back after treatment?

General treatments carry a 3-month guarantee: if the treated pest comes back in that time, we come back. Termite treatments carry a 5-year guarantee with a certificate.
