Pest control in Fordsburg is mostly a food-business job: German cockroaches in restaurant kitchens, rats and mice in back lanes and storerooms, flies around bins, and bed bugs and cockroaches in the flats above the shops. We treat the source, set up monitoring where trade is busy, and keep service records for health inspections.
Fordsburg's character, from a pest point of view
Fordsburg is one of Johannesburg's oldest suburbs, just west of the city centre, and it has always been a place of trade. The Oriental Plaza, the restaurants and takeaways, the spice and fabric shops, the mosques and the small family homes sit close together on narrow streets. Many buildings are a shop at street level with a flat or storeroom above, and the older houses are semis and row houses that share walls, roofs and drains.
For pests that is close to ideal. Food is prepared, stored and thrown away all day. Deliveries arrive in cardboard, which is how German cockroaches travel from a supplier to a new kitchen. And because buildings join, a problem in one unit rarely stays there.
Restaurants, takeaways and food stores
German cockroaches are the main issue in commercial kitchens. They hide in the warm motor housings of fridges and display units, under steel prep tables, in the hinges of cupboard doors and inside wall cracks behind stoves. We use gel baits placed in those exact spots, with targeted residual treatment where it suits, because spraying a kitchen top to bottom simply pushes them deeper into the walls. Our page on cockroach control in Johannesburg explains why gel works better.
Spice and dry-goods stores have a second, quieter problem: small beetles and moths that breed in stored grain, flour, rice and spices. The fix is mostly stock rotation and sealed containers, with treatment of the shelving and cracks once the infested stock is gone.
Before a first visit we ask the kitchen team to note where they see cockroaches at night, because those sightings point us straight to the harbourage.
Food businesses can take a scheduled monitoring contract with lockable rodent stations, regular visits and a written service record for each one. If an inspector or a landlord wants a formal pest report, we also do entomological inspections and pest reports.
Rats, mice and flies in the lanes
Brown rats in Fordsburg live mostly at ground level: under loose paving, in drains, behind stacked crates and in refuse areas. Mice get into storerooms through gaps under roller doors. We bait outside in tamper-resistant stations, trap indoors where food is handled, and point out the gaps that need sealing, such as broken air bricks, holes where pipes pass through walls and worn door seals. Flies breed in bins that are not emptied and washed regularly, so better refuse handling does more than any spray.
Pigeons on shopfronts and roofs
Pigeons roost on shop signage, ledges and old roof sheeting all over the area, and their droppings foul pavements, gutters and any stock stored near an opening. Abandoned nests can also release bird mites into the flats below. Where birds are a problem we remove nests, treat for mites and fit spikes, netting or gap sealing so they move on, which does more for hygiene than repeated cleaning.
Homes and flats above the shops
In residential units we see German cockroaches that have come up from the business below, bed bugs that arrive on second-hand furniture or with visitors, and fleas where cats roam the lanes. Bed bugs need a careful, repeated treatment of beds, frames, skirtings and plug points, and the whole flat must be done, not just the bedroom.
What gets this wrong
The most common mistake we see is one tenant in a building treating on their own. The cockroaches simply move next door for a week and then come back. In Fordsburg, where walls and drains are shared, it pays for the landlord or the neighbouring shops to treat together, even if it means a slightly larger job.
A Fordsburg tip
Break down delivery boxes outside and never store them in the kitchen or under the counter. Cardboard is warm, soaks up grease and gives cockroaches the perfect place to lay egg cases, and it is the single most common way they reach a clean kitchen.
What it costs and why
Cost depends on the type of premises, its size, how heavy the infestation is and whether you need a once-off treatment or regular monitoring. A small flat is a quick job. A restaurant with a heavy German cockroach problem usually needs a first treatment and a follow-up two or three weeks later, because eggs hatch after the first visit. Monitoring contracts are priced on the number of stations and visits. If you only see the odd cockroach in a home kitchen, a decent gel from the shop may be all you need, and we will tell you so. Our guide prices for pest control show the "from" price for each service, and we quote after we have seen the site.

Questions we get asked
Can you treat my restaurant without closing it?
Usually, yes. We work before opening or after closing and use gel baits that don't need the kitchen to be emptied.
What does a monitoring contract involve?
Regular scheduled visits, lockable rodent stations, cockroach checks and a written service record for each visit, which is what health inspectors ask to see.
How much does cockroach treatment cost for a takeaway?
It depends on the size of the kitchen and how heavy the infestation is. Most heavy cases need a follow-up visit, and our prices page shows where treatments start.
Why do cockroaches keep coming back after I spray?
Spray kills what it touches and scatters the rest into the walls, and it doesn't reach the egg cases. Gel bait placed in hiding spots, plus a follow-up, breaks the cycle.
Do you treat flats above shops?
Yes. We treat residential units and, where possible, coordinate with the business below so the building is done together.
There are tiny beetles in my rice and spices. What are they?
Most likely stored-product beetles. Throw out infested stock, clean the shelves and keep dry goods in sealed containers; if they return, we treat the cracks and shelving.
How quickly can you come out?
We offer service within 24 hours. Call 084 200 2700 or WhatsApp us a photo of what you're seeing.
