Pest control in Orange Grove usually starts at the kitchen and the roof. Cockroaches spread between shops, flats and houses along Louis Botha Avenue, rats move through old roofs and back lanes, and bed bugs and fleas follow people and pets. We find where each pest is coming from, treat it properly, and help you close the routes it uses.
How Orange Grove is put together
Orange Grove is one of Johannesburg's older eastern suburbs, running along Louis Botha Avenue between Houghton, Norwood and Highlands North. Away from the main road it's mostly modest family homes on fairly small stands, many of them built in the first half of the last century, with tin or tiled roofs, timber floors and backyard rooms or cottages added over the years. Along the avenue itself are shops, workshops, takeaways and restaurants, many of them in old buildings with flats or offices above.
The result is a lot of shared structure: back-to-back stands, outbuildings on the boundary, shops that share a wall and a drain. Pests don't need to go far to find a new home.
The pests that matter most
- German cockroaches in kitchens of takeaways, restaurants and flats, and in houses next to them. They breed fast and hide in hinges, fridge motors and electrical fittings.
- American cockroaches coming up from old drains and manholes in summer, especially after a storm.
- Roof rats and brown rats: roof rats in ceilings, brown rats burrowing under paving and around bins behind the shops.
- Bed bugs in rentals, flats and rooms where tenants change often, or where second-hand furniture has come in.
- Termites in old timber floors, door frames and anything wooden left against a wall.
- Fleas wherever dogs and cats share a small garden with the neighbours'.
Shops and food businesses on the avenue
A takeaway or restaurant with cockroaches is a health inspection problem waiting to happen. We use gel baits in the places cockroaches actually live, not a spray that drives them into the walls and next door. For food businesses we can set up a scheduled monitoring contract with bait stations for rodents and a written record of every visit, which is what an inspector or landlord wants to see. Our cockroach control in Johannesburg page explains the treatment in more depth.
Houses and backyard rooms
In the houses, rats are the most common call. They come in under loose roof sheeting, through broken air bricks and along creepers, and they love the space above an outbuilding. Bed bugs are the next most common, particularly where rooms are let. A bed bug job needs proper preparation and usually a follow-up, because eggs survive the first treatment; our bed bug treatments across Johannesburg page lists what to do before we arrive.
When the problems peak
Cockroaches in kitchens are an all-year job, but American cockroaches from the drains are mostly a summer complaint, especially in the days after a heavy storm. Rats push indoors when the nights turn cold from about May. Bed bugs don't follow the seasons at all; they follow people, luggage and second-hand beds.
What people get wrong
The most common mistake is treating one unit or one shop and ignoring the rest of the building. If a block of flats has cockroaches in four kitchens and only one is treated, it's reinfested within weeks. Talk to the landlord, the body corporate or your neighbours and get the whole building done together. It costs less in the long run than treating the same flat three times.
An Orange Grove tip
Look at your back boundary. On small stands the back wall, the outbuilding and the neighbour's bins are often all touching, and that's the route rats use. Keep a clear strip along the boundary, store bins on a hard surface away from the wall, and block holes where drain pipes pass through it.
How we work
Every job starts with an inspection. We'll ask where you've seen activity, look at kitchens, roof space, outbuildings and drains, and then explain what we plan to do. Our residual sprays are odourless and don't stain, and nobody has to move out; children and pets just stay off sprayed surfaces until the product has dried.
What it costs and why
The price depends on what we're treating, how big the property is, and whether the whole building is being done. A cockroach treatment in a small house kitchen is a modest job. A restaurant, a block of flats or a bed bug treatment of several rooms takes more time, more product and usually a follow-up visit. Our pest control price guide shows the "from" price for each treatment, and we quote after we've seen the site.

Questions we get asked
What does pest control in Orange Grove cost?
It depends on the pest, the size of the property and whether the whole building is treated. A small kitchen cockroach job is modest; restaurants, flats and bed bug jobs cost more. See our guide prices page, then we quote after inspecting.
Can you treat my takeaway without closing it?
Usually, yes. We schedule the visit around your trading hours and use gel baits and stations that are suitable for food areas.
Why do the cockroaches come back after I spray?
Spray kills the ones you see and pushes the rest into walls and neighbouring units. Gel baits get eaten and shared in the nest, which is why they work better.
How do I prepare for a bed bug treatment?
Wash bedding and clothes on a hot cycle, clear the floor around the bed and don't move furniture to another room. We'll give you a full list when you book.
Do you treat backyard rooms and cottages?
Yes. We often treat the main house and the outbuildings together, because rats and cockroaches move between them.
Is the treatment safe for my dog?
Yes, when used correctly. Keep pets off treated areas until dry, and rodent bait goes inside lockable stations a dog can't open.
How quickly can you come out?
Within 24 hours in most cases. Phone 084 200 2700 to book a slot.
