Pest control in Greenside tends to centre on fleas and ticks in homes with dogs, roof rats in older houses, cockroaches near the restaurant strip, and wood borer or termites in original timber. We start with an inspection, treat the house, garden and pet areas together where needed, and explain how to stop the problem returning.
Greenside's character
Greenside is an older, tree-lined suburb on gentle slopes between Parkhurst, Parkview and Emmarentia. Most homes are freestanding houses from the early and middle twentieth century, many with timber floors and corrugated iron roofs, plus some small blocks of flats and newer cluster homes. The shops and restaurants around Gleneagles Road give it a village feel, and Emmarentia Dam and the Botanical Garden are close enough for a daily dog walk.
That last detail matters more than you might think. A lot of Greenside households have dogs, and a lot of those dogs spend time in long grass and on shared walking routes. Add warm summer evenings, shady gardens and old houses with gaps under the floors, and you have the handful of pest problems we see here again and again.
Fleas and ticks: the dog owner's problem
Fleas and ticks are among our most common Greenside calls between October and March. Dogs pick up ticks on walks through long grass and bring them home, and fleas build up in the shady corners of a garden where pets sleep. The adult fleas you see are a small part of the problem; eggs and pupae sit in carpets, dog beds and soil. We treat the house and garden together, timed with the vet's treatment of your pets, so the cycle breaks. Our page on tick control in Johannesburg has more on ticks specifically.
Roof rats and the restaurant strip
Roof rats travel along the street trees and boundary walls, and the bins behind restaurants and shops give them a steady food supply. Houses close to the strip, and any home with fruit trees, a compost heap or a chicken run, tend to see more of them. Lockable bait stations outside, traps in the roof and sealing the gaps under the eaves are the answer.
Borer, termites and fish moths in older homes
Original pine floors and roof timbers attract wood borer, which shows as small round holes and fine dust, and subterranean termites, which build mud tubes and leave timber hollow. Older cupboards, bookshelves and boxed papers are also home to fish moths. We identify which pest it is before recommending anything, because the treatments are very different. For termite work in this part of the city, see termite control around Rosebank.
Cockroaches in kitchens and drains
Homes close to the shops see German cockroaches more often than streets further out, usually after they've come in on grocery boxes or with a second-hand appliance. They live in hinges, behind the fridge and inside the stove drawer, and gel bait placed there clears them. The big American cockroaches that appear on summer nights are a different animal: they come up from drains and manholes, so we treat those and seal the gaps around pipes.
Flats and cluster homes
Greenside's small blocks and cluster developments share roofs, walls and plumbing, so rats and cockroaches move between units easily. Where several owners are affected, ask the body corporate to arrange a treatment of the whole site. It costs each owner less, and it stops the problem bouncing between neighbours.
Mosquitoes near the dam
Being close to open water and big gardens means mosquitoes on still evenings. Most of them breed much closer than the dam, though: blocked gutters, pot plant saucers, unused water features and the old bath in the back garden. Emptying those makes a bigger difference than any spray.
What to expect on the day
We'll ask what you've seen, then check the house, the roof space where accessible, the garden and pet areas. Treatments are odourless and won't stain. You don't need to move out, but pets and children should stay off treated surfaces until they're dry, and you should vacuum carpets thoroughly before a flea treatment so eggs and pupae are exposed.
What it costs and why
What you pay depends on the pest, the size of the house and garden, and whether a follow-up is needed. Flea and tick work often needs a second visit to catch the fleas that hatch after the first. Rat control depends on the number of stations. Termite and borer work is priced on the timber or perimeter involved. This page shows a guide "from" price, and you can compare services on our pest control prices in Johannesburg. We quote after seeing the property.
The mistake we see most
Treating the pets and not the house, or the house and not the pets. Fleas jump between the two, so doing one without the other just buys you a few quiet weeks. Coordinate both, and wash pet bedding on the same day.
For the bigger picture, our Rosebank area pest control page covers the neighbouring suburbs, and Parkview next door has its own page.

Questions we get asked
How do I get rid of fleas for good?
Treat the house, garden and pets at the same time, and expect a follow-up visit for fleas that hatch after the first treatment.
My dog keeps coming home with ticks. Can you treat the garden?
Yes. We treat the shady areas, edges and pet sleeping spots where ticks wait, and your vet handles the dog.
How long after a flea treatment can my pets go back in?
As soon as the treated surfaces are dry, usually within a few hours.
Do I need to vacuum before you come?
Yes, for fleas. Vacuum carpets, rugs and furniture well and empty the bag outside; it exposes eggs and pupae to the treatment.
What does pest control cost in Greenside?
It depends on the pest and the size of the property. Fleas and ticks may need a follow-up; termites and borer are priced on the area affected. We quote after inspecting.
Can you treat a flat in Greenside?
Yes, and for cockroaches in a block it's worth involving the body corporate so neighbouring units are treated too.
