Cockroach control in Northcliff depends on which cockroach you've got. Small German cockroaches breed inside kitchens, flats and restaurants and are cleared with gel baits placed where they hide. Large American cockroaches come up from drains and manholes on the slope and need drain, perimeter and entry-point treatment. We identify the species first, then treat accordingly.
Two cockroaches, two different problems
German cockroaches: the indoor breeders
Light brown, about the length of a fingernail, with two dark stripes behind the head. They live entirely indoors, in warm, tight spots close to food and water: inside fridge and dishwasher motors, behind kettles and microwaves, in cupboard hinges and the cracks behind tiles. A female carries her egg case until it's ready to hatch, so numbers climb quickly. If you see them in daylight, the population is already large.
American cockroaches: the big ones from outside
Reddish-brown, long and fast, sometimes flying on warm summer nights. They breed in sewers, drains, manholes and damp outside spaces, and come into the house through floor drains, open waste pipes, gaps under doors and air bricks. They're the ones that appear in the bathroom at night, especially after heavy rain.

Where we find them around Northcliff
German cockroaches are mostly a story of shared walls and busy kitchens. Older blocks of flats and semis in Melville and Auckland Park, townhouse complexes around Fairland and Cresta, and the restaurants, cafés and delis in the area all give them warmth, food and connected plumbing. A treated flat can be reinfested from next door through the same service duct, and a single box of second-hand appliances or a grocery delivery can bring them in.
American cockroaches follow water. On a sloping suburb, the drainage runs downhill, and properties lower on the slope and close to municipal sewer lines see more of them. Summer is their peak season, when warm nights and heavy rain push them up and out of drains.
How we treat German cockroaches
- Inspection. We check the kitchen, scullery, bathrooms and anywhere with heat and moisture to find the harbourage points.
- Gel baiting. Small spots of gel bait go directly into the cracks, hinges and motor housings where cockroaches shelter. They eat it, return to the harbourage and pass it to others there.
- Targeted residual treatment. Where it helps, an odourless, non-staining residual product goes into voids and along the routes they travel, never sprayed over food surfaces.
- Follow-up. Eggs inside the cases aren't affected by bait, so a second visit catches the next generation before it breeds.
How we treat American cockroaches
For the big ones, we treat drains, manholes, outside gullies and the perimeter of the building, along with the gaps where they come in. A drain cover with a fine mesh, a sealed gap around a waste pipe and a tight seal under a back door often matter as much as the treatment itself.
Restaurants, cafés and food shops
Commercial kitchens need more than a once-off treatment. We set up scheduled visits outside service hours, use gel baits and targeted treatments that don't contaminate food areas, and keep a written service record that health inspectors and auditors will want to see. Deliveries are a common source of new cockroaches, so we also look at where stock is received and stored.
The mistake: spraying the kitchen
A household spray kills the cockroaches it hits and makes the rest scatter deeper into walls and appliances, where they keep breeding. Worse, insecticide residue on surfaces can put cockroaches off the gel bait, which is the treatment that actually works. If you're about to have us in, put the spray can away.
A local tip
If you live lower on the slope and get big cockroaches in the bathroom after storms, pour a bucket of water into floor drains and unused basins once a week. A dry trap is an open door from the sewer.
What cockroach control costs, and why
The cost depends on the species, the size of the property, how heavy the infestation is and whether a follow-up visit is needed. A single flat with German cockroaches is a modest job. A restaurant kitchen or a whole block of flats takes more time and is often better on a monitoring contract. See the guide prices for cockroach and other treatments for the starting figure. If you see one American cockroach a year after a storm, you probably don't need us at all.

Questions we get asked
Why do I still see cockroaches after the treatment?
With gel baiting you'll often see more for a few days, as cockroaches come out to feed on the bait. Numbers should drop steadily after that. Eggs hatch later, which is why we do a follow-up visit.
How much does cockroach control cost?
It depends on the species, the size of the property and how heavy the infestation is. A flat costs less than a restaurant kitchen. Our price guide shows the starting price.
Is gel bait safe around kids and pets?
Yes. It's placed in tiny amounts inside cracks, hinges and appliance housings where children and pets can't reach it, not spread on open surfaces.
Do I have to empty my kitchen cupboards?
For gel baiting, usually not. For heavier German cockroach infestations we may ask you to clear the lower cupboards so we can reach the hinges and corners. We'll tell you when booking.
Why do big cockroaches come in after rain?
Heavy rain floods drains and sewers, and American cockroaches move up and out through floor drains, dry traps and gaps under doors.
Can my neighbour's flat reinfest mine?
Yes. German cockroaches move through shared walls, ducts and plumbing. Treating neighbouring units at the same time gives much longer-lasting results.
Do you work in restaurants after hours?
Yes. We schedule visits outside service hours and keep a written record for health inspections.
