Cockroach control in Johannesburg South kitchens and businesses

Small brown roaches scattering when the kitchen light goes on, or a big one climbing out of the shower drain. The south gets both, and they need different treatments.

American cockroach on a wall, treated by our cockroach control in Johannesburg South

Cockroach control in Johannesburg South deals with two main species: small German cockroaches living inside kitchens, flats and food businesses, and large American cockroaches coming up from drains and sewer lines. We use gel baits in the cracks where German cockroaches breed and treat drains and entry points for the bigger ones, so the infestation is cleared, not scattered.

Why roaches are such a constant down south

The south has a lot of what cockroaches need. Older blocks of flats and semis share walls, ducts and plumbing, so an infestation in one unit soon spreads to its neighbours. Main roads through Rosettenville, Turffontein and Southdale are lined with takeaways, butcheries and small shops, each with its own kitchen, storeroom and bins. And many older homes have original sewer and drain lines, which give American cockroaches an easy route up through floor drains, gully traps and gaps around pipes.

Cockroaches don't care about the season indoors. In a warm kitchen they breed all year, but the summer heat speeds everything up, and it's in summer that people notice the big outdoor species coming in.

Know your cockroach

German cockroach

Small, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. This is the one that lives in your kitchen: inside the hinges of cupboards, behind the fridge, in the motor of the microwave, under the kettle base. It breeds fast and is almost always the problem in flats and restaurants.

American cockroach

Large, reddish-brown and able to fly short distances on warm nights. It lives in drains, sewers, manholes and damp outdoor spots and wanders indoors, often appearing in bathrooms and near floor drains. It's alarming, but it's usually a sign of a drain or entry problem rather than a kitchen infestation.

If you want more detail on the species found around the city, our article on the cockroaches common in Johannesburg covers them all.

Signs of an infestation

  • Roaches running for cover when you switch on the kitchen light at night
  • Small black specks, like ground pepper, in cupboard corners and door hinges
  • Brown egg cases tucked behind appliances or under shelves
  • A musty, oily smell in cupboards when the infestation is heavy
  • Roaches seen during the day, which usually means their hiding places are full

How we get rid of them

For German cockroaches we use gel baits, placed in tiny spots inside hinges, under counters, behind appliances and in the cracks where the roaches actually live. They feed on it, return to their hiding places and spread it through the group. It's odourless, doesn't need you to empty every cupboard, and works far better than spraying, which only drives them deeper into the walls. A follow-up visit catches the next generation hatching from egg cases.

For American cockroaches we focus on drains, gully traps, manholes and the outside of the building, with a residual treatment around entry points. We also show you where they're coming in, because sometimes a missing drain cover or a broken seal is the whole story.

Restaurants, takeaways and food shops can have a scheduled service with records for every visit. Treatments are planned around trading hours.

The mistake that spreads the problem

Bombing the kitchen with a fogger or spraying every surface. German cockroaches simply move into the next room, the next cupboard or the next flat, and the spray leaves a film on surfaces that stops them from eating any bait put down afterwards. In a block of flats, one tenant spraying can push the roaches straight into the neighbours' units. If you've already sprayed, tell us, because we'll need to clean the bait spots first.

A tip for older southern homes

Pour a bucket of water down floor drains and unused basins once a week, and make sure the gully outside has a proper grate. Old drains in the south often dry out, and a dry trap is an open door for American cockroaches coming up from the sewer.

What cockroach control costs, and why

For a house or flat, it's a modest job. The price rises with the size of the kitchen and the number of rooms affected, how heavy the infestation is, whether a follow-up is needed, and for businesses, how often we visit. Blocks of flats get the best result, and often the best value, when the whole block is done at once. Guide "from" prices are on our pest control prices for Johannesburg page, and the full quote follows a look at the property.

Cockroaches and mice often share a kitchen, so if you're seeing droppings too, see mouse control in the south. Locally, we cover pest control in Turffontein and every suburb listed on our Johannesburg South pest control hub. We also run cockroach treatments in Soweto, and for the whole city there's cockroach control across Johannesburg.

Combat Pest Control is owned and run by Jason van Heerden, with 25 years of pest control experience. We're SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture, offer service within 24 hours, and our cockroach treatments are guaranteed for 3 months. Call 084 200 2700, or WhatsApp us a photo of the roach and we'll tell you which species it is.

Questions we get asked

How much does cockroach control cost?

For a house or flat it's a modest job. The price depends on how many rooms are affected, how heavy the infestation is and whether a follow-up is needed. Businesses are quoted per site.

Do I have to empty my kitchen cupboards?

Usually not for gel baiting. We place small dots of bait in hinges, cracks and behind appliances. We'll tell you beforehand if any cupboard needs clearing.

Is gel bait safe with pets and children around?

Yes. It's used in tiny amounts in cracks and hinges where children and pets can't reach, and it has no smell.

Why do I still see cockroaches after the treatment?

For a week or two you may see more, as roaches come out to feed on the bait. If you're still seeing them after the follow-up visit, the 3-month guarantee means we come back.

Where do the big cockroaches in my bathroom come from?

Usually the drains. American cockroaches live in sewer lines and come up through dry traps and floor drains, especially on warm summer nights.

Should the whole block of flats be treated?

It's the best way. Cockroaches move between flats through shared walls and plumbing, so treating only one unit often pushes them next door.

Can you treat my restaurant without closing it?

Yes. We plan visits around your trading hours and keep a record of each treatment for health inspections.
