Cockroach control in Roodepoort kitchens, flats and complexes

Small brown roaches scattering when you switch on the kitchen light, or a big red-brown one in the bath on a hot night. They're two different problems with two different fixes.

American cockroach on a wall, treated by our cockroach control in Roodepoort

Cockroach control in Roodepoort depends on which cockroach you have. Small German cockroaches breed inside kitchens and spread through complexes along shared plumbing; we clear them with gel baits placed where they hide. Large American cockroaches come in from drains and gardens in summer, and we treat their entry points and outdoor harbourage instead.

The two cockroaches we see most in Roodepoort

German cockroaches: the kitchen breeders

These are small, light brown and fast, with two dark stripes behind the head. They live indoors their whole lives, hiding in warm, tight spaces near food and water: fridge motors, dishwasher kick-plates, kettle bases, the hinges of kitchen cupboards and the gap behind the stove. A female carries her egg case until it's almost ready to hatch, which is one reason numbers build up so quickly. If you see them during the day, the population is already large.

American cockroaches: the drain visitors

These are the big, reddish-brown ones, sometimes called sewer roaches. They live in drains, manholes, storm-water pipes and damp garden areas, and come indoors through floor drains, gaps under doors and open windows, especially on warm, humid summer nights after a thunderstorm. Older homes with original drainage, in parts of Florida and the older Roodepoort suburbs, often see them more.

Why complexes have a cockroach problem

Much of Roodepoort's housing is townhouses and cluster homes, particularly around Weltevredenpark, Little Falls and the newer developments on the west side. Units are built back to back, with kitchens and bathrooms often sharing walls and plumbing ducts. German cockroaches travel easily through those service gaps, so a unit that's been treated can be reinfested from next door within weeks. When several owners report roaches, a block treatment arranged through the body corporate is the only approach that lasts.

How we treat German cockroaches

Spraying is the wrong tool for German cockroaches. It kills the ones it touches, scatters the rest deeper into the walls and can make them avoid baits for a while. We use professional gel baits instead, placed in tiny dots in the cracks, hinges and voids where they live. Cockroaches eat the bait, return to their hiding place and pass it on to others. Depending on how heavy the infestation is, we return to inspect and re-bait two or three weeks later to catch the young that hatch from egg cases.

How we treat American cockroaches

For the big drain roaches we work from the outside in. We treat around drains, gullies, manhole covers and damp garden harbourage with an odourless, non-staining residual product, and check the routes they use into the house. Fitting drain covers, sealing gaps around pipes and keeping floor drains topped up with water stops most of them coming in.

Signs to look for

  • Pepper-like droppings in cupboard corners, drawers and on top of the fridge
  • Brown egg cases tucked into hinges or behind appliances
  • A musty, oily smell in a cupboard with heavy activity
  • Cockroaches running when you switch on the light at night
  • Shed skins near the kettle, toaster or microwave

What people get wrong

Mixing sprays and baits. People set out gel or bait stations, then spray the same cupboards with a supermarket aerosol. The spray contaminates the bait and the roaches avoid it, so the treatment fails. If you've had a baiting treatment, don't spray those areas, and don't wipe the bait away when you clean.

A Roodepoort tip

In summer, when afternoon storms move through, pour a cup of water into rarely used floor drains, shower drains and basins in the guest bathroom once a week. A dry trap is an open door for American cockroaches coming up from the sewer, and this costs nothing.

Restaurants, takeaways and food businesses

Food premises need regular, recorded treatment rather than a once-off spray. We set up a monitoring contract, use baits and treatments suitable for food areas, schedule visits around your trading hours and leave a service record after each one, which is what health inspectors and auditors ask for.

What cockroach control costs, and why

The price depends on the size of the kitchen and the home, how heavy the infestation is, and whether a follow-up visit is needed. A light German cockroach problem in a single townhouse kitchen is a modest job. A block of units or a restaurant is quoted per site. American cockroaches that only come in now and then can sometimes be handled by sealing drains and gaps yourself, and we'll say so. Our guide "from" price for cockroach work appears on this page, and our pest control prices in Johannesburg cover the other services.

Questions we get asked

How much does cockroach treatment cost in Roodepoort?

It depends on the size of the home or kitchen, how heavy the infestation is and whether a follow-up is needed. A single townhouse kitchen is a modest job; whole complexes and restaurants are quoted per site.

Why do I still see cockroaches after treatment?

With gel baiting, it's normal to see some for a week or two as they feed on the bait and die. Young ones hatching from egg cases are dealt with on the follow-up visit.

Must I take everything out of the kitchen for gel baiting?

For gel baiting, usually not completely. Clear the area under the sink and wipe away grease and crumbs, but don't clean off the bait afterwards.

Is gel bait safe with children and pets?

Yes. It's applied in tiny amounts deep in cracks and hinges where children and pets can't reach it.

Why do big cockroaches come in after rain?

Storms flood drains and garden harbourage, so American cockroaches move up and out, often through floor drains and gaps under doors.

Can you treat my whole complex?

Yes, and it's the best option when several units have cockroaches. We arrange it with the body corporate so every unit is done together.

Do I need to leave the house?

No. Gel baiting and our residual treatments don't require you to move out. Keep pets away from sprayed areas outside until they're dry.
