Cockroach control in Soweto works when the baits go where the cockroaches actually live: inside stoves, fridge motors, cupboard hinges and drains. We identify the species, place gel baits and targeted treatments in every harbourage, treat the main house and backyard rooms together, and return if needed, so the infestation dies out instead of scattering.
The two cockroaches behind most calls
German cockroaches: the indoor breeders
These are the small, light-brown cockroaches with two dark stripes behind the head. They never really live outside. They breed inside warm kitchen appliances, in the gap behind a cupboard, in a microwave or kettle base, in the seals of a fridge door, and they multiply very quickly. A female carries her egg case until it's ready to hatch, which is one reason sprays struggle: the eggs are protected. If you switch on the light at night and see dozens running for cover, it's almost certainly German cockroaches.
American cockroaches: the drain dwellers
These are the big, reddish-brown ones, sometimes called "Parktown prawns" by mistake (the real Parktown prawn is a king cricket). American cockroaches live in sewer lines, drains, manholes and outside toilets, and come up into bathrooms and kitchens on warm summer nights, especially after rain. They don't usually breed indoors in big numbers. The answer is to treat the drains and outside harbourage, not the whole house.

Signs the problem is bigger than it looks
Cockroaches hide during the day, so by the time you see one in daylight there's usually a crowded harbourage nearby. Other clues are worth checking. Look for droppings like ground pepper or small black specks along shelf edges, inside drawers and on top of the fridge. Check for brown egg cases, about the size of a grain of rice, stuck in cupboard corners. A sour, oily smell in a closed cupboard is another sign of a heavy population. And if you open the back of the kettle base or the microwave and find live cockroaches inside, the infestation is established and won't clear with a spray.
How cockroaches move around a Soweto yard
Many Soweto stands have more than one household on them, and cockroaches move with people's things. A box of groceries from a spaza shop, a second-hand fridge, a microwave borrowed from the main house, a bag of clothes: each can carry egg cases into a backyard room. Rooms that share a wall or a drain line with the main kitchen pass cockroaches back and forth. Treating one room and not the others is the most common reason infestations bounce back here.
Spaza shops, taverns and takeaways
Food businesses run warm equipment all day and store stock in cardboard, which cockroaches love. Fridges, chest freezers, deep fryers and the bottom of bread crates are the hotspots we treat first. For trading premises we work around opening hours, use gel baits that won't contaminate food, and can set up a regular service with a written record for each visit, which is useful if an environmental health officer comes by.
Our treatment
- Inspection with a torch. We check appliances, cupboard hinges, under sinks, behind fridges, the stove drawer, drains and outside toilets to find where they're breeding.
- Gel baits. Small dots of gel go into cracks and hinges where the cockroaches hide. They feed, return to the harbourage and spread the bait to others, including young ones that never come out.
- Targeted residual treatment for drains, outside walls and areas where gel isn't practical, using odourless, non-staining products.
- Follow-up for heavy infestations, because eggs that were protected during the first visit still need to be caught as they hatch.
You can stay in the house. Keep children and pets off sprayed surfaces until they're dry; the gel sits in cracks where they can't reach it.
The mistake that keeps cockroaches alive
Spraying with a can from the shop, or setting off a "bomb", while the gel baits are working. Sprays kill the few cockroaches they touch, contaminate the bait so the others avoid it, and drive the colony deeper into walls and appliances. If we've baited, put the spray can away.
A tip for Soweto homes
Unpack groceries outside or on the stoep and throw the cardboard boxes away before bringing food into the kitchen, especially stock carried home from wholesale. Boxes are one of the main ways German cockroaches arrive in a clean house.
What cockroach control costs
Cost depends on how bad the infestation is, how many kitchens and rooms need treating, and whether follow-up visits are needed. One kitchen with a light infestation is a modest job. A main house plus several backyard rooms, or a tavern kitchen, takes longer. Our price guide for cockroach treatments shows the "from" price. If you're only seeing an occasional big cockroach from the drain, keeping drain covers closed may be all you need.

Questions we get asked
How much does cockroach treatment cost in Soweto?
It depends on the infestation and the number of rooms. A single kitchen costs less than a house plus backyard rooms or a tavern. We confirm the price after inspecting.
How long before the cockroaches are gone?
You'll see more of them for a few days as they come out to feed on the bait, then numbers drop sharply over one to three weeks. Heavy infestations need a follow-up visit.
Is cockroach gel safe for children and pets?
Yes. The gel is placed in small amounts inside cracks, hinges and appliances where children and pets can't reach it.
Do I need to empty my kitchen cupboards?
Clear the cupboards under the sink and around the stove so we can get into the corners. You don't need to empty the whole kitchen.
Why do cockroaches come back after I spray?
Spray only kills what it touches. Eggs survive, and cockroaches deep inside appliances and walls are never reached, so the population recovers within weeks.
Can you treat a second-hand fridge or stove?
Yes, and it's worth doing before you bring it into the house. Appliances are one of the main ways German cockroaches arrive.
What should I do before you arrive?
Stop spraying a few days before, wipe up grease and crumbs, and clear access to the stove, fridge and under the sink.
