Cockroach control in Fourways depends on which cockroach you've got. Small German cockroaches breeding inside kitchens need gel baits placed where they hide; large American cockroaches coming up from drains need treatment outside and in the drain system. We identify the species, treat the source, and come back where a colony is well established.
Two cockroaches, two very different jobs
German cockroaches: the indoor breeders
About the length of a fingernail, light brown with two dark stripes behind the head. They live their entire lives indoors, in warm, tight spaces close to food and water: inside the hinges of kitchen cupboards, under the dishwasher, behind the fridge's motor, in the microwave and kettle base, and in the seams of the stove. A single female carries a capsule with dozens of eggs, so numbers climb quickly. If you're seeing them in daylight, the colony is already large.
American cockroaches: the drain visitors
Much bigger, reddish-brown, and able to fly short distances on a warm evening. They live in sewers, drains, manholes and damp outside areas, and come into houses through floor drains, gaps around pipes and under doors. In Fourways they're most noticeable in summer, especially after heavy afternoon storms flush the drains.
Why Fourways has a cockroach problem
Fourways is one of the busiest retail and restaurant nodes in the north of Johannesburg. Food courts, restaurants, takeaways, supermarkets and the delivery bays behind them all create the warm, food-rich conditions German cockroaches thrive in. They don't stay put. They travel in cardboard boxes, grocery crates, delivery packaging and second-hand appliances, which is how a spotless home in a new estate ends up with roaches in the kitchen.
Townhouse complexes add another layer. Units share walls, plumbing stacks and service ducts, so a colony in one kitchen can move into the next. When someone in the block sprays heavily, the survivors scatter through the pipes and turn up in the neighbours' kitchens a week later.
Try this check at night
Wait until the house is quiet, about an hour after the kitchen lights go off. Walk in, switch the light on and look at the counter, the sink and behind the kettle. A couple of German cockroaches running for cover means there's a colony nearby. Then check the hinges of the cupboard under the sink with a torch; brown specks that look like ground pepper are their droppings, and they show you exactly where the harbourage is.
How we treat cockroaches
For German cockroaches, we place small dots of gel bait into the cracks, hinges, seams and motor housings where they live. Cockroaches eat the bait, return to their hiding places and pass it on to the rest of the colony. It's quiet, it doesn't smell, you don't need to empty every cupboard, and it reaches the roaches deep in places a spray never touches. Where needed we combine it with a residual treatment in voids and behind appliances.
For American cockroaches, we treat floor drains, manholes, the outside walls, the base of the building and damp areas such as pool pump rooms and refuse areas, and point out the gaps that let them in.
Heavy German cockroach infestations usually need a follow-up visit, because eggs that were protected inside their capsule will hatch after the first treatment.
Restaurants, food courts and shops
Food businesses in Fourways can't afford a cockroach sighting in front of customers, or in front of a health inspector. We set up scheduled treatments outside trading hours, use gel baits in kitchens and food prep areas, monitor activity between visits, and keep a written service record for every visit. Cockroaches in a commercial kitchen often go hand in hand with flies around the refuse area; see fly control for Fourways businesses if that's an issue too.
The mistake that makes it worse
Using a supermarket fogger or spraying the kitchen with a household insecticide. German cockroaches have learnt to avoid many sprays, and fogging drives them deeper into walls and into the next unit, while the eggs survive untouched. Spraying over gel bait also ruins the bait, because roaches won't eat a treated surface. If we've placed gel, leave it alone for a few weeks.
Prevention in a Fourways home
- Unpack grocery deliveries and online orders outside or in the garage, and recycle the boxes rather than storing them in the kitchen.
- Check second-hand fridges, microwaves and kitchen appliances carefully before they come inside.
- Fix dripping taps and leaks under the sink; cockroaches need water more than food.
- Keep drain covers in place, and pour water into rarely used floor drains so the trap doesn't dry out.
What cockroach control costs, and why
For a home, the price depends on the species, the size of the kitchen and how established the colony is. A townhouse kitchen with a German cockroach problem is a fairly modest treatment; a large home with roaches in several rooms, or a full drain treatment, costs more. Restaurants and shops are quoted on the size of the site and how often we visit. You'll find starting prices on our pest control cost page. If you see one American cockroach in the shower once a summer, you probably don't need us; keep the drain cover in place.

Questions we get asked
How much does cockroach treatment cost in Fourways?
For a home it depends on the species, the size of the kitchen and how big the colony is. A townhouse kitchen is a modest job; restaurants and larger homes are quoted on the site. Our price guide shows where treatments start.
Do I need to empty my kitchen cupboards?
Usually not for a gel bait treatment. Clear the area under the sink and around the stove and fridge so we can get to the cracks and hinges.
How long until the cockroaches are gone?
You'll normally see a big drop within one to two weeks as the colony eats and shares the bait. Heavy infestations need a follow-up visit to catch the young that hatch later.
Is gel bait safe around children and pets?
Yes, when it's placed correctly. We put tiny amounts deep inside cracks, hinges and appliance housings where children and pets can't reach it.
Why do I have cockroaches in a brand-new house?
German cockroaches travel in boxes, grocery crates, deliveries and second-hand appliances. A new home is no protection if they're carried in.
Can you treat a restaurant without closing it?
Yes. We work before or after trading hours, use gel baits in food areas, and leave a written service record for each visit.
Why do big cockroaches come out of my shower drain?
Those are American cockroaches living in the drains and sewer. Keep drain covers on, run water in unused drains, and have the drains and outside areas treated if they keep coming.
