Cockroach control in Bryanston kitchens and complexes

Small brown roaches scattering when you switch on the kitchen light, or a big one crawling out of the shower drain on a hot night. Both are common in Bryanston, and they are treated differently.

American cockroach on a wall, treated by our cockroach control in Bryanston

Cockroach control in Bryanston depends on which cockroach you have. Small German cockroaches live inside kitchens and spread between cluster units; large American cockroaches come up from drains and gardens. We identify the species, place gel baits exactly where German cockroaches hide, and treat drains and entry points for the big ones, so the infestation is cleared rather than scattered.

Two cockroaches, two problems

German cockroaches: the indoor breeders

These are small, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. They live their whole lives indoors, in the warm, dark gaps of a kitchen: door hinges, the motor housing of the fridge, behind the dishwasher, inside the microwave, under the sink and in the cracks of old cupboards. They breed fast, and a few brought in with a box of groceries or a second-hand appliance can become hundreds within a season.

American cockroaches: the drain visitors

These are the big reddish-brown ones, and they can fly short distances on hot summer nights. They live in sewer lines, manholes, stormwater drains and damp corners of the garden, and they come in through floor drains, bath outlets and gaps under doors. You see one or two at a time, usually near the bathroom, kitchen or garage.

Signs you have a German cockroach problem

  • Small cockroaches running when the kitchen light goes on at night
  • Black pepper-like droppings in cupboard corners, on hinges and along the top of the fridge seal
  • Brown egg cases, about the size of a rice grain, tucked into cracks
  • A musty, oily smell in a cupboard or behind the stove when the infestation is heavy
  • Cockroaches seen in daylight, which usually means the hiding places are full

How Bryanston homes shape the problem

In Bryanston's many cluster complexes, German cockroaches are the main issue. Units are built back to back, with shared plumbing runs, service ducts and roof spaces, so a colony in one kitchen can feed a slow, steady flow into the neighbours. An owner who treats thoroughly can find the problem back within months because next door has not.

On freestanding stands it is more often American cockroaches. Older drainage, garden manholes, pool-pump rooms and outside toilets in staff quarters give them places to live, and summer storms push them up out of flooded drains. Kitchens on large properties can also carry German cockroaches, often introduced with deliveries or boxes from storage.

How we treat cockroaches

  1. Inspection. We check the kitchen, scullery, bathrooms and drains to confirm the species and find where they are concentrated. A torch and a look behind the fridge tell us a lot.
  2. Gel baiting for German cockroaches. Small spots of gel bait go into the hinges, cracks, motor housings and voids where they hide. The cockroaches feed and carry it back to the others. There is no smell and no need to empty the kitchen.
  3. Residual treatment for American cockroaches. We treat drains, manholes, the perimeter and entry points with an odourless, non-staining residual product.
  4. Follow-up. Heavier German cockroach infestations need a second visit to deal with nymphs hatching from egg cases laid before the first treatment.

Restaurants, offices and complexes

Food businesses, office kitchens and body corporates can go onto scheduled monitoring with a written record of each visit. For complexes, we strongly recommend treating all units on one block on the same day; it is the most reliable way to stop the problem bouncing back and forth.

What people get wrong

Spraying a German cockroach problem with a household aerosol. It kills the ones you see, but it also drives the rest deeper into wall voids and neighbouring units, and the residue can put them off eating the gel bait afterwards. If you have already sprayed, tell us, and wipe down the areas you treated before we arrive.

A Bryanston tip

If you live in a cluster unit, pour a jug of water into every floor drain and unused shower or basin once a week. Dry U-bends give American cockroaches an open road from the shared sewer line straight into the bathroom, and it is a common reason the big ones turn up in units that are otherwise spotless.

What cockroach control costs, and why

The main factors are the species, the size of the infestation, the number of rooms involved and whether a follow-up is needed. A German cockroach treatment in a single kitchen is a contained job. A whole block in a complex, a restaurant kitchen or a large home with drain problems takes more time. There is a guide "from" price on this page, and our price guide for pest control lists the rest. A single American cockroach once a summer doesn't need a professional; keeping drains wet and sealing the gap under the door is often enough.

Ants are the other common kitchen invader here, and our ant control in Bryanston explains how baiting deals with the nest. We treat cockroaches in Sandton next door, homes in Bryanston East, and kitchens city-wide through cockroach control in Johannesburg. The Bryanston pest control hub lists everything else we treat locally.

Questions we get asked

How much does cockroach control cost in Bryanston?

It depends on the species, how bad the infestation is and how many units or rooms are involved. One kitchen with German cockroaches is a contained job; a whole complex block or a restaurant costs more. We quote after the inspection.

Do I need to empty my kitchen cupboards?

No. Gel baits are placed in hinges, cracks and voids, so you only need to clear the area under the sink and give us access behind appliances where possible.

Is the treatment safe for my children and pets?

Yes. Gel bait is applied in tiny spots inside cracks and hinges, out of reach. Keep children and pets off any sprayed surfaces until they are dry.

How long does it take to get rid of German cockroaches?

You should see a big drop within one to two weeks. A follow-up visit catches the young that hatch from egg cases laid before the first treatment.

Why do I get big cockroaches in the bathroom?

Those are American cockroaches coming up from the drains. Keeping floor drains and unused basins topped up with water, and sealing gaps around pipes, cuts them off.

Can you treat our restaurant without closing it?

Yes. We work around your trading hours, use gel baits in food areas, and provide a written service record for your health inspection file.

Will my neighbour's cockroaches come back into my unit?

They can, which is why we recommend treating a whole block of a complex together. Treating one unit in isolation often gives only temporary relief.
