Cockroach control in Randburg

Small brown cockroaches scattering when you switch on the kitchen light, or a big reddish one climbing out of the shower drain on a hot night. Different roaches, different plans.

American cockroach on a wall, treated by our cockroach control in Randburg

Cockroach control in Randburg depends on which cockroach you're seeing. Small German cockroaches breeding in kitchens, flats and food businesses are cleared with gel baits placed where they hide. Large American cockroaches coming up from drains and manholes need treatment at the source outside. We identify the species, then target the harbourage, not just the floor.

Two very different cockroaches

German cockroaches: the indoor breeders

These are small, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. They live their whole lives indoors, in warm, tight spaces close to food and water: the hinges of kitchen cupboards, the motor of the fridge, the inside of a microwave, the gap behind a kettle, the back of a dishwasher. They breed fast, and a female carries her egg case until it's about to hatch, which is one reason sprays struggle to finish them off. If you see them in daylight, the population is already large.

American cockroaches: the drain dwellers

Much bigger, reddish-brown and able to fly short distances. They live in sewers, stormwater drains, manholes and damp outside areas, and come indoors through floor drains, gaps around pipes and under doors, especially on hot summer nights after rain. One or two in the bathroom doesn't mean they're breeding in the house; it usually means there's a route in from the drains.

Why Randburg sees so many German cockroaches

Randburg has a lot of shared walls. There are blocks of flats near the main business areas, townhouse complexes all over the newer suburbs, and rows of takeaways, restaurants and shops along the main roads. German cockroaches travel between units through plumbing ducts, electrical conduits and the gaps behind kitchen units. They also arrive with deliveries, in cardboard boxes, second-hand appliances and even in handbags. A single flat can clear its problem completely and still be reinfested by the neighbours a few weeks later.

How we get rid of cockroaches

For German cockroaches the main tool is gel bait, placed in small dots exactly where they shelter: hinges, cracks, appliance housings, the edges of shelving. Cockroaches eat it, return to their hiding places and pass it on to others there. It's odourless, doesn't need you to empty every cupboard, and it reaches insects a spray never touches. Where needed we add a targeted, non-staining residual treatment in voids and along routes.

For American cockroaches we treat the drains, manholes, gullies and outside areas where they live, and seal or screen the points where they're getting into the building.

Heavy infestations, particularly in restaurants and flats, usually need a follow-up visit to catch the next generation as eggs hatch.

Restaurants, takeaways and food shops

For food businesses we set up scheduled treatments with a written service record for each visit, which is what a health inspector or franchise auditor will ask for. We work around trading hours and focus on the places cockroaches really live in a commercial kitchen: under equipment, inside wall-mounted units, around dishwashers and in the dry store. Flies tend to be the next complaint in summer, and our fly control for Randburg businesses covers that side.

The mistake that makes it worse

Spraying a German cockroach problem with a can from the supermarket. It kills the few you can see, but it also contaminates the gel bait if we've placed it, and it drives the survivors deeper into walls and into the neighbouring units. Many over-the-counter sprays also repel cockroaches, so they simply move away and keep breeding. If we're treating, put the spray away.

A Randburg tip for complexes and flats

Check the gap where your kitchen pipes go through the wall under the sink. In many units it's an open hole into the duct shared with the flat next door or below. Sealing it with filler or a pipe collar cuts off one of the main routes cockroaches use between units.

What cockroach control costs, and why

Cost depends on the species, the size of the property, how heavy the infestation is and whether it's a home or a food business. A light German cockroach problem in a flat is a modest job; a restaurant kitchen needs more time, more bait and regular visits. American cockroaches from the drains usually need outside treatment rather than indoor work. You can see where cockroach treatments start in our pest control costs for Johannesburg, and this page shows its guide "from" price. If you've seen one big cockroach once, a drain cover and a door seal may be enough.

Want to know more about the species? Our article on the cockroaches common in Johannesburg explains how to tell them apart, and cockroach treatments across Johannesburg covers the wider service. We also treat cockroaches in Bryanston next door, and residents of Bordeaux have their own page. More local services are listed on our Randburg pest control page.

Questions we get asked

How much does cockroach treatment cost in a flat?

A light German cockroach problem in a flat is one of our more modest jobs. The price rises with the size of the unit and how heavy the infestation is, and we'll confirm it before we start.

Why am I still seeing cockroaches after the treatment?

For the first week or two, gel bait brings cockroaches out as they feed and die, so seeing a few is normal. If numbers aren't dropping after that, we come back, and treatments carry a 3-month guarantee.

Is gel bait safe around children and pets?

Yes, when it's placed properly. We put tiny amounts in cracks, hinges and appliance housings, out of reach and out of sight.

Do I need to empty my kitchen cupboards first?

Usually not for gel baiting. Clear the area under the sink and wipe up grease and crumbs. If we need to do a residual treatment as well, we'll tell you what to move.

Can my neighbours give me cockroaches?

Yes. German cockroaches move between flats and townhouses through shared ducts and plumbing. Treating the whole block with the body corporate gives a far longer result.

Where do the big cockroaches in my bathroom come from?

Usually the drains. American cockroaches live in sewers and manholes and come up through floor drains and gaps around pipes, especially on hot nights.

Can you treat our restaurant without closing it?

Yes. We schedule around trading hours, use gel baits in food areas and keep a written record of each visit for your inspections.
