Pest control in Dainfern is shaped by the golf estate, the Jukskei River and large, high-value homes. Our most common work there is mosquitoes off the river and water features, subterranean and harvester termites, rats along green belts, bees settling in wall cavities and roofs, and bird mites from nesting birds. We work within estate access rules and treat the cause.
Why Dainfern is its own case
Dainfern is one of the best-known golf estates in the north, laid out along the Jukskei River west of Fourways. Homes are large, many with double-volume rooms, big roof areas, decks, water features and landscaped gardens that run down to fairways or open space. Security is tight and the estate has its own rules for contractors, so planning matters.
From a pest point of view, the estate is a well-watered green landscape surrounded by river and open ground. Irrigated fairways and gardens keep soil moist all year, which suits termites and moles. The river, ponds and water features breed mosquitoes. Large roofs with complex lines and lots of overhangs give birds, bees and rats plenty of places to get in.
What we treat in Dainfern
Mosquitoes
Summer evenings on a Dainfern patio can be miserable after rain. Mosquitoes breed in still water: ornamental ponds without fish, birdbaths, blocked box gutters, drains, pot-plant saucers and the folds of pool covers. Our first job is to find those breeding spots on your property. Then we treat the shady shrubs, eaves and undersides of decks where adult mosquitoes rest during the day. See our mosquito control in Johannesburg page for how this works.
Termites
Subterranean termites go for timber decks, pergolas, door frames, built-in cupboards and the timber in large roofs, travelling up in mud tubes from moist soil. Harvester termites cut grass in lawns in the dry months. In an estate full of irrigated lawns, both are common. Our termite treatments for Fourways estates explain the soil treatment and baiting we use, and structural work carries a 5-year guarantee with a certificate.
Rats
Roof rats travel along the river vegetation and green belts, climb trees and creepers and get into roofs and pool pump rooms. We use lockable bait stations outside, sited discreetly in landscaped beds, and traps in the roof space.
Bees and wasps
Honeybee swarms in spring sometimes move into wall cavities, roof voids, irrigation boxes or old meter boxes. Where possible we work with a beekeeper to remove them, and then seal the cavity so the scent doesn't attract the next swarm. Paper wasps build under eaves and pergolas through summer and are treated and removed. More on our bee removal in Fourways page.
Bird mites
Pigeons, sparrows and mynas nest in gaps in large rooflines and behind gutters. When the chicks fledge, bird mites wander indoors and bite. We remove the nest, treat the area and recommend bird proofing for the gap.
Decks, pump rooms and lapas
A lot of Dainfern pest activity happens in the parts of a property nobody visits often. Timber decks over soil hide termite tubes on the underside of the joists. Pool pump rooms and plant rooms are warm, dark and quiet, which makes them a favourite nest site for rats and a favourite hiding place for spiders and scorpions. Thatched lapas collect bird nests and the mites that follow. When we inspect, we make a point of checking these spaces, because they often explain what's turning up inside the house.
Working inside the estate
Tell us your access requirements when you book, and we'll arrive with what the gate needs. We can work while you're out if a house manager or domestic worker is home. For homeowners' associations and managing agents, we can quote for common areas, clubhouse kitchens, refuse areas and guardhouses, with scheduled visits and a service record.
Insect treatments are odourless and won't stain timber floors, stone or furniture. You don't need to leave the house; children and pets should keep away from treated surfaces until they've dried.
What owners commonly get wrong
Blaming the river for every mosquito. The river matters, but most mosquitoes biting you on the patio bred within a short distance of it, often in the box gutter, a dry pond with a puddle in the bottom, or the cover on the pool. Finding and fixing those does more than any amount of spraying.
A Dainfern tip
Have the box gutters and flat-roof outlets checked after the first big summer storm. On large modern roofs they're easy to forget, they hold water for days when leaves block them, and they breed mosquitoes right above the bedrooms.
What it costs and why
Dainfern homes are larger than average, so price depends on the size of the house and garden, the number of stations needed, the length of the termite perimeter and whether we need specialist access to high roofs. Mosquito and wasp work is quicker; termite and bird work takes longer. A guide "from" price is shown on this page, and you can see all services on our pest control prices list. We quote after the inspection.
Dainfern is part of our Fourways pest control service, and nearby Lone Hill has its own page.
Combat Pest Control is owned and operated by Jason van Heerden, who has 25 years of experience. We're registered with SAPCA and the Department of Agriculture, offer service within 24 hours, and if a treated pest returns within 3 months, so do we. Call 084 200 2700, or WhatsApp us a photo.
Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost for a Dainfern home?
It depends on the size of the house and garden and the pest. Mosquito and wasp work is quick; termite and bird work costs more on large homes. A guide from-price is on this page, and we quote after inspecting.
Can you work around the estate's contractor rules?
Yes. Let us know the access requirements when you book and we'll arrive prepared. We can work with your house manager if you're out.
Can you stop mosquitoes completely near the river?
Nobody can remove every mosquito near a river, but finding and fixing breeding spots on your property and treating resting areas makes evenings far more comfortable.
There's a bee swarm in my wall. Will you kill it?
Where possible we work with a beekeeper to remove the bees alive, then seal the cavity so another swarm doesn't move in.
Do you service estate common areas?
Yes. We quote for clubhouse kitchens, refuse areas, guardhouses and common gardens, with scheduled visits and a service record.
Is the treatment safe for timber floors and stone?
Yes. Our residual sprays are odourless and non-staining. Children and pets just need to wait until the surfaces have dried.
How long is the termite guarantee?
Structural termite treatments carry a 5-year guarantee and a treatment certificate.
