Pest control in Kya Sand is mostly commercial work: rodent monitoring in warehouses and factories, cockroaches in staff canteens, flies around loading bays and waste, pigeons roosting in high roofs, and stored-product insects in raw materials. We set up scheduled programmes with lockable stations and written service records that stand up to audits and inspections.
What Kya Sand is like
Kya Sand is an industrial area on the north-western side of Johannesburg, between the Randburg side and the growth around Fourways. It's made up of factories, warehouses, distribution yards, workshops and trade suppliers, with a large residential community, including an informal settlement, close by. Trucks come and go all day, roller doors stand open for hours and many buildings have high steel roofs with open eaves.
Industrial sites attract pests for straightforward reasons. Rodents want shelter, warmth and food, and a warehouse full of pallets, cartons and raw materials provides all three. Open roller doors let them walk straight in. Staff canteens and kitchens bring cockroaches. Waste skips and wash bays bring flies. And high roof trusses are perfect for pigeons, which then foul stock and floors below.
Pests that cost Kya Sand businesses money
Rats and mice
Rodents chew packaging, contaminate stock, damage cabling and can stop a food or packaging business passing an audit. We install numbered, lockable, tamper-resistant bait stations around the external perimeter and along internal walls, use traps or monitoring stations inside production and food areas where bait isn't appropriate, and record every check. More about this on our rodent control in the Fourways area page.
Cockroaches
German cockroaches breed in canteen kitchens, change rooms, vending machines and anywhere warm with water. American cockroaches come up from drains and sumps. We use gel baits in harbourage and targeted residual treatments, and inspect the drains.
Flies
House flies and blow flies breed in food waste, wet organic material and skip areas, and they're drawn into buildings by open doors. Waste management is half the solution; treating resting surfaces and breeding sites is the other half.
Pigeons
Pigeons roosting on trusses, beams and ledges inside a warehouse leave droppings on stock, vehicles and walkways, which is a hygiene and slip hazard. They also bring bird mites. We install netting, spikes and gap sealing to keep them out of the building. See our bird proofing service in Johannesburg for the options.
Stored-product insects
Grain beetles, weevils and moths get into flour, maize, animal feed, seeds and other dry goods. Once a batch is infested, they spread to clean stock. Where needed, fumigation with registered fumigants can treat infested goods or containers; the sealed area has to be vacated until it's cleared. Our fumigation services across Johannesburg page explains how it works.
Audits, inspections and paperwork
Most of our industrial clients need more than a treatment. They need proof. Our scheduled programmes include a site plan of station positions, a service record after every visit noting activity and action taken, and recommendations for proofing and housekeeping. For food businesses and property transactions, we also carry out entomological inspections and written pest reports. Combat Pest Control is SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36, which auditors usually ask to see.
How we work around production
We schedule visits to suit shifts and deliveries, and we can work early or late if needed. Residual treatments we use are odourless and won't stain floors or racking. Staff don't need to leave for normal insect treatments; treated surfaces should be left alone until dry. Fumigation is the exception, and we plan it with you so the area is sealed and empty.
A common mistake in warehouses
Stacking pallets tight against the walls. It leaves no inspection gap, so rodents can live behind the stock for months without anyone seeing them, and bait stations can't be placed where they're needed. Leaving a clear strip along walls makes monitoring work and shows up activity early.
A Kya Sand tip
Fit brush strips or rubber seals to the bottom of roller doors and keep them closed when trucks aren't loading. Most rats and mice in an industrial unit walk in under a door at night, and a worn seal is the cheapest fix there is.
What it costs and why
Commercial pest control is usually priced as a contract, not a once-off. The cost depends on the size of the site, the number of stations, how often we visit, the pests covered and what reporting you need. A once-off treatment of a canteen is a smaller job. Bird proofing is quoted on the area to be netted or spiked, and fumigation on volume. A guide "from" price is shown on this page and our Johannesburg pest control rates give a starting point. We quote properly after a site survey.
Kya Sand is covered by our Fourways and north-west pest control, and nearby Zandspruit has its own page.
Owner and operator Jason van Heerden brings 25 years of pest control experience to every site. We offer service within 24 hours, and general treatments carry a 3-month guarantee. Call 084 200 2700 to arrange a site survey, or WhatsApp us a photo of what you're finding.
Questions we get asked
How much does a pest control contract cost in Kya Sand?
It depends on the size of the site, the number of stations, how often we visit and the reporting you need. A guide from-price appears on this page, and we quote after a site survey.
Do you provide service records for audits?
Yes. Every visit is recorded with activity and action taken, and we provide a site plan of station positions.
Can you keep pigeons out of our warehouse?
Yes. We install netting, spikes and gap sealing based on where the birds roost and get in.
Do staff have to leave during treatment?
Not for normal insect treatments. Fumigation is different: the sealed area must be vacated until it's cleared, and we plan that with you.
Can you work outside production hours?
Yes. We schedule around shifts and deliveries and can work early or late.
Do you do pest inspections and reports?
Yes. We carry out entomological inspections and written pest reports for food businesses and property transactions.
Are you registered?
Yes. We're SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36 of 1947.
