Pest control in Zandspruit mostly means rats and mice, German cockroaches, bed bugs, fleas and flies. With homes and rooms close together, these pests spread easily, so we focus on safe baiting with locked stations, gel treatments that don't scatter roaches into the next room, and simple steps that keep them away. We also treat small shops and food sellers.
About Zandspruit
Zandspruit is a large community on the north-western edge of Johannesburg, near Honeydew and the estates around Northriding. It's made up of a dense informal settlement alongside formal homes, with many small businesses: spaza shops, food sellers, hair salons, workshops and taverns. Much of the area is unpaved, and refuse collection and drainage can struggle to keep up with the number of people living there.
Those conditions are what pests need. Rubbish, food waste and building materials give rats shelter and food. Shared walls and closely built rooms let cockroaches and bed bugs move from one home to the next. Standing water after summer storms breeds mosquitoes and flies. None of it is a reflection on the people who live there; it's the result of density and services, and good pest control works with that reality.
The pests that matter most
Rats and mice
Rats are the biggest worry. They chew through food, clothing, cables and walls, contaminate what they touch and carry diseases such as leptospirosis. In homes with small children, the bait must be safe. We only use lockable, tamper-resistant stations that a child or a dog can't open, placed along the walls and paths rats use. Indoors, where appropriate, we use traps. Our rodent control in Johannesburg page explains the approach.
German cockroaches
Small, light-brown roaches in kitchens and cupboards, mostly seen at night. They breed fast and spread through shared walls. Gel bait placed in cracks, hinges and appliance motors kills the colony, including the roaches you never see. Sprays tend to chase them to the neighbour and back.
Bed bugs
Itchy bites in rows, blood spots on sheets and dark marks along mattress seams are the signs. Bed bugs come in on second-hand furniture, mattresses, bags and clothing. They need careful treatment of the bed, the frame, the walls behind it and nearby furniture, normally with a follow-up visit.
Fleas
Dogs and cats carry fleas, but the eggs and larvae live in mattresses, mats and the sandy ground around the house. Treating the room, the yard and the animals together breaks the cycle. Our flea control around Fourways page has more detail.
Flies
Flies breed in food waste and rubbish and are worst in the hot summer months. Food sellers and butcheries feel it most. Closed bins and bagged waste, plus treatment of resting areas, help a lot.
When pests are worst
Summer and winter bring different problems. From October to March, heat and storms mean more flies, mosquitoes, fleas and cockroaches, and blocked drains and puddles add to it. From May, cold nights push rats and mice indoors, looking for warmth under floors, in roofs and behind cupboards. Bed bugs don't follow the seasons much; they move whenever people and furniture move. Planning a rodent treatment before winter, when rats are still mostly outside, gives the best result.
Small businesses in Zandspruit
If you sell food, rats and cockroaches can ruin stock and drive customers away. We set up locked rodent stations, gel baits in storerooms and kitchens, and treatments that are safe for food areas. We can come on a regular schedule and leave a written service record each time.
Safe treatment at home
You don't need to leave your home for a normal treatment. Our sprays don't have a strong smell. Children and pets should stay away from treated surfaces until they've dried, and nobody should try to open a bait station.
The mistake that makes things worse
Using loose poison, especially the unlabelled granules sold informally. It's dangerous to children and animals, it often isn't registered, and rats learn to avoid it. Poisoned rats can also die inside walls and under floors, causing a terrible smell. Registered bait in locked stations is safer and works better.
A Zandspruit tip
Keep food in sealed plastic or metal containers, not in bags on the floor, and store mattresses and bedding off the ground where you can. Rats and cockroaches go where food is easy, and bed bugs and fleas find it hardest to settle on raised, clean bedding.
What it costs and why
Price depends on the pest, how many rooms or buildings we're treating, and whether a second visit is needed. Cockroach treatment for one kitchen or room is one of our most affordable jobs. Bed bugs cost more because of the follow-up. Treating several neighbouring homes on the same day works out better value, because the pests can't simply move next door. The guide "from" price is shown on this page and all services are on our pest control prices page. We always quote before starting.
Zandspruit is covered by our Fourways pest control team, and you may also want the Diepsloot pest control page or the Kya Sand page if you run a business nearby.
Combat Pest Control belongs to Jason van Heerden, who has been in pest control for 25 years and does the work himself. We're SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture, we can usually be there within 24 hours, and general treatments carry a 3-month guarantee. Call 084 200 2700, or WhatsApp us a photo of the pest.
Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost in Zandspruit?
It depends on the pest and the number of rooms. Cockroaches in one room or kitchen is an affordable job; bed bugs cost more because they need a follow-up. A guide from-price is on this page.
Is the rat bait safe for my children?
It's kept inside locked, tamper-resistant stations that children and pets can't open. We never leave loose poison.
Can several neighbours book together?
Yes. Treating neighbouring homes on the same day works better and stops pests moving from one home to the next.
How long does it take to get rid of cockroaches?
Gel bait starts working within days, and most kitchens are clear within two to three weeks. If they come back within 3 months, we return.
Do I need to move out for bed bug treatment?
No. You can stay, but follow the preparation steps we give you, such as washing bedding hot and clearing around the bed.
Can you treat my spaza shop or food stall?
Yes. We use locked stations and food-safe treatments and can visit regularly with a service record.
