Pest control in Ennerdale usually means dealing with rats and mice, German and American cockroaches, flies in summer, bed bugs, and harvester termites stripping dry lawns in winter. We treat family homes, backyard rooms, shops and small businesses, using locked bait stations and targeted treatments, and we explain what to change so the pests don't return.

About Ennerdale

Ennerdale lies on the far south-western side of Johannesburg, beyond Lenasia and towards the Vaal side of Gauteng. It's a large residential area with established family homes, many extended over the years, newer extensions and developments, backyard rooms, local shops, churches and schools. Much of the surrounding land is open, dry Highveld grassland.

That landscape shapes the pests. Open veld is home to rodents, harvester termites, spiders and scorpions, which move into homes on the edges, particularly when winter sets in or land is cleared. Dense streets with shared walls let cockroaches and rats move easily between homes. Dumping sites and refuse that sits too long feed rats and breed flies. And the dry winter turns lawns and open ground into prime harvester termite territory.

The main pests in Ennerdale

Rats and mice

Brown rats burrow under paving, rubble, outbuildings and backyard rooms and come into houses through gaps under doors, broken air bricks and drains. Mice get into kitchens and cupboards through tiny gaps. Both contaminate food and chew cables. We use lockable, tamper-resistant stations that children and pets can't open, placed along the routes rodents use, with traps indoors where needed. Our rat control in Johannesburg South page explains the method.

Cockroaches

German cockroaches live indoors in kitchens and cupboards and spread between homes. American cockroaches are the big reddish-brown ones that come up from drains and outside manholes in summer. Gel baits clear German cockroaches; drain and perimeter treatments deal with the American kind. More about this on our cockroach control in the south page.

Harvester termites

In the dry months, harvester termites cut grass and carry it underground, leaving bare, sandy patches with small holes and loose soil. They're very common on the open, dry ground of the south-west. They don't attack buildings, but they can wipe out a lawn. Subterranean termites, the ones that do damage timber, are a separate issue we also treat; see our southern Johannesburg termite treatments.

Flies

Flies breed in rubbish, food waste and animal droppings and peak in the hot, wet summer. Closed bins, bagged waste and regular collection make the biggest difference; we treat resting and breeding areas where pressure is high.

Bed bugs

Bed bugs travel in luggage, second-hand beds and furniture. Look for itchy bites in lines, blood spots on sheets and dark marks on mattress seams. Treatment is thorough and usually needs a follow-up visit.

For shops and food businesses

Shops, takeaways and butcheries in Ennerdale need to protect stock and pass health inspections. We set up lockable rodent stations, gel baits for cockroaches and fly control, visit on a schedule and leave a written service record each time.

Safety at home

For a normal treatment, there's no need to leave your house. Our sprays have no strong smell and won't stain. Keep children and animals off sprayed surfaces until they're dry, and never let them near a bait station.

What people often get wrong

Treating only the inside of the house for rats. In Ennerdale most rodent problems start outside, in rubble, overgrown corners, backyard rooms and dumping spots. Unless the outside is baited and the shelter removed, new rats keep coming in.

An Ennerdale tip

Clear old bricks, timber and rubbish away from the walls of the house and any backyard rooms, and keep grass short along the boundary that faces open land. Rats, spiders and termites all use those spots, and clearing them makes any treatment work much better.

When pests peak

From October to March, flies, cockroaches and mosquitoes are at their worst, and flying termites come out after the first heavy rain. From May to August, rats and mice move indoors to escape the cold nights, and harvester termites strip the dry lawns. Booking a rodent treatment in autumn, before the cold sets in, keeps rats outside rather than under the roof.

What it costs and why

The price depends on what we're treating, the size of the property and whether there are backyard rooms or outbuildings to include. Cockroach and ant work in a family home is one of the more affordable jobs. Rats depend on the number of stations. Bed bugs cost more because of the follow-up visit. Harvester termites are priced on lawn area. A guide "from" price is shown on this page, and our Johannesburg pest control prices list gives the rest. We always quote before we start.

Questions we get asked

How much does pest control cost in Ennerdale?

It depends on the pest, the size of the property and whether backyard rooms are included. Cockroaches and ants are affordable; bed bugs and rats cost more. A guide from-price is on this page.

What's eating my lawn in winter?

Bare, sandy patches with small holes and loose soil heaps usually mean harvester termites. They're common on the dry ground of the south-west, and we treat the lawn.

Is rat poison safe with children at home?

Only in a locked station. We use tamper-resistant stations that children and pets can't open, and we never leave loose poison.

Can you treat my backyard rooms too?

Yes, and we recommend it. Pests move between the house and backyard rooms, so treating them together lasts longer.

How soon can you come?

Usually the next day at the latest, since we offer service within 24 hours. Phone 084 200 2700 to get a slot.

Do you service shops and takeaways?

Yes. We set up scheduled visits with lockable stations and gel baits and leave a written service record each time.
