Pest control in Southdale most often means rats and mice in roofs and garages, cockroaches in kitchens, ants before storms, paper wasps under eaves and termites in lawns or timber. We identify the pest from the signs, inspect to find where it's coming from, and treat it with baits, lockable stations, nest removal or termite treatment as needed.
The suburb
Southdale is a residential suburb in the south, close to Robertsham, Ormonde and Rosettenville, with a local shopping centre that serves the surrounding area. Housing is a mix of older family homes on medium-sized stands, some townhouses and blocks of flats. Gardens tend to be established, with trees, lawns and the usual mix of sheds, outside rooms and garages. It's a typical southern suburb in that sense, and the pests follow the typical southern pattern: rodents in winter, insects in summer and termites year-round.
If you're seeing this, it's probably...
Scratching above the ceiling at night
Roof rats or mice in the roof space. Rats are louder and heavier; mice sound like light pattering. It peaks from May to August as the nights get cold. We bait outside in lockable stations, trap in the roof, and show you where they're getting in, usually at the eaves, through gaps where roof sheets meet walls, or from overhanging branches.
Small dark droppings in a drawer or cupboard
Rice-sized droppings with pointed ends are mice. Smaller, ridged pellets that look a bit like ground pepper, often in hinges and corners, are German cockroaches. Both point to food sources nearby, and both are treated differently.
A trail of tiny ants across the counter
Usually a colony nesting in the wall cavity, under paving or in a flowerbed against the house, often most active just before rain. We place baits along the trail so the workers take them home to the nest. Our ant control in Johannesburg page explains why baiting beats spraying.
A papery grey nest under the eaves
Paper wasps. Nests start small in spring and grow through summer. Don't knock it down yourself while wasps are on it; we treat and remove it safely.
Thin brown tunnels up a wall
Those are termite mud tubes, and they mean subterranean termites are travelling from the soil to timber somewhere in the building. Leave them intact so we can trace them. Our termite control in Johannesburg South covers how we treat structural infestations, with a 5-year guarantee and certificate.
Bare patches and small holes in the lawn in winter
Harvester termites cutting grass and carrying it underground. They don't damage buildings, but they can strip a lawn. Treating the active holes takes care of the colony.
Large brown cockroaches at night in summer
American cockroaches coming up from drains, gully traps and manholes. Treating drains and making sure covers and grids fit properly keeps them outside.
Silver insects in the bookshelf or cupboard
Fish moths. They feed on paper, glue, starch and fabric, and like dark, slightly damp built-in cupboards, bookshelves and boxes stored in the garage. A targeted treatment and moving stored papers into sealed boxes keep them down.
Itchy bites around the ankles
Usually fleas, especially in homes with dogs or cats, or where rats have been nesting under the floor or in the roof. The house, garden and pets all need treating in the same week.
What happens when we visit
We confirm what you've seen, then inspect the property: the roof space where accessible, kitchen and cupboards, garage, outbuildings, drains, walls and garden. We'll explain what we found and recommend a treatment. Products are odourless and non-staining. There's no need to leave home for normal treatments. Children and pets should stay off sprayed areas until the product has dried, and rodent bait stays inside lockable stations.
Something people get wrong
Treating the symptom and not the source. Killing the ants on the counter, the cockroaches in the open or the wasps flying around doesn't touch the nest. It's the nest or colony that has to be found and treated for the problem to end.
A Southdale tip
Take a photo of what you've seen before you clean it up: droppings, insects, a mud tube or lawn damage. Send it to us on WhatsApp and we can often identify the pest straight away, which saves time on the day.
What it costs and why
The cost depends on which pest it is, how established it has become and the size of the property. A single wasp nest or an ant problem is a small job. Rodents in a roof need stations, traps and usually a follow-up. Termites in a building are the biggest job because of the perimeter, drilling and timber involved. You'll see a guide price on this page, and our pest control pricing for Johannesburg lists the main services. If something is small enough to handle yourself, we'll say so.
Southdale is covered by our Johannesburg South pest control service, and nearby pest control in Robertsham has its own page.
We've been at this for 25 years. Jason van Heerden owns and runs Combat Pest Control, which is SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36. Questions we get asked
What does pest control cost in Southdale?
It depends on the pest, how established it is and the size of the property. A wasp nest or ant treatment is a small job; termites cost the most. You'll find a guide price on this page.
Can you identify a pest from a photo?
Often, yes. WhatsApp us a clear photo of the insect, droppings, damage or mud tube and we'll tell you what it is and what it needs.
Should I knock down a wasp nest myself?
Not while wasps are active on it. They defend the nest and can sting repeatedly. We treat and remove it safely.
How long does a general treatment last?
Most general treatments keep working for several months, and they carry a 3-month guarantee. If the treated pest comes back in that time, we come back.
Do I need to be out of the house during treatment?
No, you can stay at home and carry on with your day. We'll point out which areas were treated so the family and pets avoid them until dry.
What should I do with termite mud tubes before you arrive?
Leave them exactly as they are. Breaking them open sends the termites elsewhere and makes it harder for us to trace the activity.
Are harvester termites a threat to my house?
No. They eat grass, not timber. They can strip a lawn, but they're a separate problem from the subterranean termites that damage buildings.
