Pest control in Meredale for homes and complexes

Townhouse complexes, family homes and open veld close by give Meredale a mix of garden pests and indoor ones. Here's what tends to cause trouble and how we sort it out.

Pest control in Meredale usually covers harvester termites in complex lawns, mice and rats moving in from nearby open ground in winter, ants in kitchens, spiders and the odd scorpion along walls, and cockroaches in shared buildings. We inspect the unit and the grounds, treat the cause and, in complexes, work with the body corporate so the fix holds.

Meredale at a glance

Meredale is one of the newer residential parts of the south, lying west of the Mondeor and Southgate area. It's largely made up of freestanding family homes and townhouse complexes, many built in the last few decades, with patches of open veld and undeveloped land still around the suburb. Compared with the older southern suburbs, the buildings are younger and the timber problems fewer, but the open ground nearby makes a real difference to what turns up in gardens and garages.

How the open land shapes things

Veld and vacant stands are home to field mice, rats, spiders, scorpions and harvester termite colonies. In summer they mostly stay put. When the Highveld winter arrives and the grass dies back, mice and rats go looking for warmth and food, and the first buildings they meet are the garages and units on the edge of the complex. In the same dry months, harvester termites start cutting the grass on lawns and verges, leaving bare, sandy patches and small holes ringed with soil.

The pests that matter in Meredale

Harvester termites

This is one of the commonest complaints from Meredale complexes, because shared lawns are large and often watered less in winter. Treatment goes into the active holes so the colony takes it underground. Read more on our Johannesburg South termite control page, which also covers subterranean termites in buildings.

Mice and rats

Droppings in the garage, a chewed bag of dog food or scratching in the ceiling from about May onwards are the usual signs. We use lockable bait stations around the outside and traps inside. Our mouse control in Johannesburg page explains why mice need a slightly different approach from rats.

Ants

Ants arrive in long trails along skirting boards and through gaps in paving, often just before summer storms. Baits carried back to the nest deal with the whole colony.

Spiders and scorpions

Units next to open ground, rockeries and wood piles see more of both. A barrier treatment around the base of walls, doors and garage openings cuts down the numbers that wander inside.

Cockroaches

In complexes with shared sewer lines, American cockroaches can come up through drains in summer, and German cockroaches can spread between kitchens. Both are treated differently, so we identify them first.

For body corporates and managing agents

A complex works best as a single site. If one unit is treated for mice and the neighbour isn't, the mice simply move. We can treat the common areas and perimeter on a schedule, set up rodent stations along the boundary closest to the veld, and treat harvester termites across the shared lawns in one go. Every visit is recorded, so trustees can see what was done and where.

Our process

  1. Inspection of the unit, garage, garden and boundary, looking for entry points, nests and food sources.
  2. Treatment matched to the pest: bait stations, gel or ant bait, barrier sprays or termite treatment.
  3. Proofing advice, such as door brushes on garages and sealing pipe holes.
  4. Follow-up where the problem needs it.

Treatments are odourless and won't stain. You don't need to leave home; just keep pets and children off sprayed areas until they're dry.

A common mistake

Re-seeding or laying new lawn over harvester termite damage without treating first. The colony is still there and simply eats the new grass. Treat, wait for the holes to stop reopening, then repair the lawn.

A Meredale tip

If your unit backs onto open ground, fit a brush strip to the bottom of the garage door before winter. It's cheap, quick to install, and closes the gap mice use more than any other.

What it costs and why

For a single home, the cost depends on the pest, the size of the property and the garden, and whether a follow-up is needed. For a complex, it depends on the number of units, the size of the common lawns and how often you'd like us to visit. Harvester termites on one small lawn is a quick job; a whole estate is priced per site. There's a guide price shown on this page, and the full list is on our Johannesburg pest control prices page.

Meredale is covered by our pest control in Johannesburg South team, and nearby Southgate has its own page.

We've been in pest control for 25 years. Combat Pest Control is run by its owner, Jason van Heerden, and is SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36. We offer service within 24 hours and a 3-month guarantee on general treatments. To book, call 084 200 2700 or WhatsApp us a picture of the problem.

Questions we get asked

How much does it cost to treat a complex in Meredale?

It depends on the number of units, the size of the common lawns and how often you want visits. We quote per site after a walk-through, and the guide price on this page shows where single-home jobs start.

Why do mice only show up in winter?

When the veld dries out and nights get cold, mice move into garages and roof spaces looking for warmth and food. Sealing the gaps before May makes a big difference.

Will harvester termites damage my house?

No. Harvester termites eat grass, not timber. Subterranean termites are the ones that damage buildings, and we check for both during an inspection.

Do I have to be home for the treatment?

Someone needs to let us in and show us where the problem is. After that, you can carry on as normal, keeping children and pets off treated areas until dry.

How long does an ant treatment take to work?

You'll often see more ants for a day or two as they take the bait, then numbers drop over about a week as the nest is affected.

Is a barrier spray safe around my pets?

Yes, once it's dry. Keep pets inside or away from the treated walls and doorways until the surface has dried.
