Pest control in Rosettenville

Restaurants, delis and bakeries next to older houses and blocks of flats make Rosettenville a busy place for pests. Here's how we deal with them in homes and food businesses alike.

Pest control in Rosettenville deals with German cockroaches in restaurant kitchens and flats, rats behind shops and in older houses, bed bugs in rented rooms, flies around food businesses and termites in old timber. We inspect, find the source and treat it, and for food businesses we run scheduled monitoring with a written record for inspections.

Rosettenville's character

Rosettenville is one of the oldest suburbs in the south of Johannesburg, and for decades it has been closely linked with the city's Portuguese community and its restaurants, bakeries, delis and butcheries. Older houses and semis with timber floors stand alongside blocks of flats, small shops and buildings that have been converted into rental rooms. Parts of the suburb are densely occupied, and some buildings have seen little maintenance in years.

From a pest point of view, it's the closeness that counts. Food businesses, flats and homes often share walls, back lanes and drainage, so a cockroach or rat problem in one building rarely stays there.

Food businesses: the biggest part of our work here

Commercial kitchens, bakeries and butcheries are warm, wet and full of food, which is everything German cockroaches, rats and flies need. A once-off spray won't hold in that environment. What works is a scheduled service:

  • Lockable rodent stations placed around the outside, the refuse area and storerooms, checked and recorded each visit.
  • Gel bait in cockroach harbourage such as under ovens, inside equipment housings and behind wall-mounted units.
  • Fly management around refuse and back doors, plus drain treatment for drain flies.
  • A written service record and, where needed, an entomological inspection and pest report for audits or a new owner.

We work around trading hours so customers don't see us. Our cockroach control for the southern suburbs explains our treatment of kitchens in more detail.

Homes and flats

Cockroaches

In flats and semis, German cockroaches move between units through plumbing ducts and gaps around pipes. Treating your own unit helps, but the best result comes when the building is treated together, which is worth raising with your landlord or body corporate.

Rats

Brown rats live in back lanes, under shop floors and in refuse areas. Roof rats get into older houses from trees and along walls. We use lockable stations outside and traps inside.

Bed bugs

Where tenants move often, bed bugs travel with them in bedding, furniture and bags. They hide in mattress seams, bed frames and the joints of nearby furniture, and come out at night to bite. Proper treatment covers the whole bed area and usually needs a follow-up.

Termites and wood borer

Old timber floors and roof timbers in Rosettenville's older houses are vulnerable to subterranean termites and wood borer. Mud tubes and hollow boards point to termites; small round holes with fine dust point to borer. Our termite treatments for Johannesburg South cover this, with a 5-year termite guarantee and certificate.

Birds and bird mites

Pigeons roost on ledges and in the roofs of older buildings. Besides the mess, the nests can carry bird mites that bite people indoors once the birds move on. We remove nests, treat for mites and can bird-proof the ledges.

How a visit runs

For a home, we inspect the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, roof space where we can reach it and the yard, then explain what we've found before treating. For a food business, the first visit is a full site survey: we map where stations should go, note any proofing problems such as gaps under doors or broken drain covers, and agree on a visit schedule. Insect treatments are odourless and won't stain. You don't need to move out of a home for normal treatment; just keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry.

A mistake that's easy to make

Restaurant owners sometimes switch providers or stop treatment the moment the cockroaches disappear. In a commercial kitchen they're always being reintroduced on deliveries and boxes, so regular monitoring is what keeps them from coming back.

A Rosettenville tip

Break down and remove delivery boxes as soon as they're unpacked. Cardboard is one of the main ways German cockroaches arrive in shops and kitchens, and it gives them shelter if it's left stacked in a storeroom.

What it costs and why

For homes, the cost depends on the pest, the size of the property and whether follow-ups are needed. Bed bugs and termites take more work than a cockroach treatment in one kitchen. For businesses, a monitoring contract is priced on the size of the premises, the number of stations and how often we visit. A guide price appears on this page, and our full price guide for Johannesburg lists the main services.

Questions we get asked

How much does a restaurant pest control contract cost?

It depends on the size of the kitchen and premises, the number of stations and how often we visit. We quote after a site inspection; the guide price on this page shows where home treatments start.

Will you give me paperwork for a health inspection?

Yes. Every visit on a monitoring contract has a written service record, and we can do an entomological inspection with a pest report if you need one.

Can you treat my flat if the neighbours won't?

Yes, and it will help, but cockroaches can return from untreated units. Treating the whole building gives the most lasting result.

How long does bed bug treatment take?

The treatment itself takes a few hours, and a follow-up visit is usually needed about two weeks later to catch any that hatched from eggs.

Do I need to close my shop during treatment?

No. We work before opening, after closing or in quiet periods, and use baits and gels suited to food areas.

How do bird mites get into my home?

They live in pigeon and myna nests in the roof or on ledges. When the birds leave, the mites go looking for a new host and can come indoors.
