Pest control in Darrenwood mostly means dealing with roof rats and mice in winter, harvester termites eating the lawn, ants coming indoors before summer storms, and fish moths in older built-in cupboards. We inspect first, find out why the pest chose your house, then treat the cause with targeted baits and odourless sprays.
A quiet suburb with established gardens
Darrenwood sits on the older side of Randburg, close to the Randburg CBD and within easy reach of Linden and Blairgowrie. Most properties are freestanding family homes on decent-sized stands, many built several decades ago and extended since. Gardens have had years to fill out: hedges, fruit trees, creepers on the boundary wall, a compost corner, a dog or two. Some stands have been subdivided or turned into small clusters, but the overall feel is still one of houses with roofs, ceilings and lawns rather than flats.
That is the key to the pest picture here. Older roofs have gaps where sheeting, fascia boards and gutters have shifted over the years. Lawns that have been down a long time are prime harvester termite territory. And a garden with plenty of shelter keeps rodents, ants and spiders fed right up to the back door.
Pests we see most in Darrenwood
Rats and mice in the ceiling
From about May, when Highveld nights turn properly cold, rodents that lived in hedges and compost move up into roof spaces. Roof rats climb creepers and overhanging branches; house mice slip in under garage doors and through weep holes. We place lockable bait stations outside, set traps in the roof and track where they travel so we can show you which gaps to close. Our rat control in Randburg homes page explains how the baiting works.
Harvester termites in lawns
Bare, straw-coloured patches with small holes and little heaps of loose soil are a dry-season sign of harvester termites. They cut and carry grass underground and can strip a lawn badly by late winter. Watering and fertilising won't solve it, because the colony sits well below the surface. We treat the active holes directly. If you also notice mud tubes on a wall or hollow skirting boards indoors, that is a different species, and our termite treatments in the Randburg area cover both.
Ants before the rain
Trails across the kitchen counter and up the sink cupboard are typical in the weeks before and after the first summer thunderstorms. Spraying the trail kills the foragers you can see and leaves the nest untouched. Gel and granular baits that workers carry home deal with the queen and the brood.
Fish moths and silverfish
Older built-in wardrobes, boxed papers in the garage and bookshelves against cool outside walls give fish moths everything they need. They are harmless to people but chew paper, photos and fabric. A residual treatment of cupboards and skirting voids, plus drier storage, usually ends the problem.
How a Darrenwood visit works
- Walk-around: we check the roofline, the garden and the kitchen, and get into the ceiling where access allows.
- Identify: droppings, gnaw marks, soil heaps and damage tell us which pest and how many.
- Treat: lockable bait stations for rodents, baits for ants, direct treatment for harvester termites, and non-staining residual sprays where they make sense.
- Advise: a short list of what to seal, trim or move so the problem doesn't simply return.
You don't need to leave the house for any of this. Keep children and pets off sprayed surfaces until they have dried.
The mistake we see most often
People throw loose poison into the roof. The rat eats it, dies in a wall cavity and the smell lasts for weeks. Worse, the gaps that let it in are still open, so the next one arrives within a month. Secure bait stations outside, traps inside and proofing work far better.
A local tip for older Darrenwood roofs
Check the gap between the top of the wall and the roof sheeting at the gable ends. On houses of this age the mortar or filler there has often crumbled away, and it is the most common rodent entry point we find. A little steel wool and mortar is cheap; we can point out exactly where.
What it costs and why
The price depends on what we're treating, how big the house is, and whether the problem is inside, outside or both. A straightforward ant or cockroach treatment in a family home is a smaller job than baiting a large roof for rats or treating a lawn full of harvester termite holes. Follow-up visits for rodents are built into the quote where they're needed. Each page on this site shows a guide "from" price, and you can compare them on our Johannesburg pest control price list. If a few ant baits from the shop will do the job, we'll say so.
Darrenwood falls within our wider Randburg pest control service, and nearby Blairgowrie has its own page with a similar mix of older homes.

Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost in Darrenwood?
It depends on the pest and the size of the property. Ants or cockroaches in a family home cost less than a full rodent programme in a large roof. Our price page shows guide "from" prices, and we confirm the cost after a quick inspection.
Why do the rats only start in winter?
Cold nights push them indoors. Rats and mice spend summer in hedges and compost, then move into warm ceilings from around May when Highveld temperatures drop.
What are the bare patches in my lawn?
If you see small holes with heaps of loose soil and cut grass, it's almost certainly harvester termites. They're most noticeable in dry winters and need a direct treatment of the holes.
Will the treatment harm my dog?
Not when it's used correctly. Rodent bait stays inside lockable stations a dog can't open, and pets should stay off sprayed areas until they're dry.
How long does a general treatment last?
A residual treatment keeps working for weeks, and our general treatments carry a 3-month guarantee. If the treated pest comes back in that time, we come back.
Do I need to empty my kitchen cupboards first?
For cockroaches or ants, it helps to clear the cupboard under the sink and wipe the counters. We'll tell you exactly what to move when you book.
Are fish moths a sign of damp?
Often, yes. They prefer cool, slightly damp, undisturbed spots such as outside-wall cupboards and garage boxes. Improving airflow helps the treatment last.
