Pest control in Ferndale for flats, complexes and homes

Ferndale packs flats, townhouse complexes, older houses and busy main-road businesses into one suburb. Pests move between them easily. Here's how we break the cycle.

Pest control in Ferndale is mostly about pests that spread between neighbours: German cockroaches in blocks of flats, bed bugs in rentals, mice in complexes, ants in ground-floor units and fleas wherever there's a dog. We treat the unit you call about, then help the body corporate or landlord deal with the building so it doesn't come straight back.

Why Ferndale pests travel

Ferndale is one of Randburg's denser suburbs. Close to the Randburg CBD, it has a large share of walk-up flats and townhouse complexes along and behind the main roads, with older freestanding homes on the quieter streets and shops, offices and restaurants on the busy routes. A lot of people rent here, and there's a steady flow of tenants moving in and out.

Shared walls, shared ceilings and shared plumbing ducts let cockroaches and mice move from one unit to the next. Furniture moving in and out brings bed bugs. Communal bin areas feed rodents. In a suburb like this, treating one flat in isolation is often the reason a problem keeps returning.

The five problems we treat most in Ferndale

German cockroaches

Small, light-brown cockroaches in the kitchen, behind the fridge and in the kettle base are German cockroaches. They breed fast and hide in warm, tight spaces. We use gel baits placed in cracks, hinges and appliance housings, because spraying scatters them into the next unit. More detail is on our cockroach treatments in Randburg page.

Bed bugs

Itchy bites in a line, tiny blood spots on sheets and dark specks along mattress seams point to bed bugs. They arrive on second-hand furniture, luggage and moving boxes, not because a place is dirty. Treatment means a thorough inspection of beds, couches and skirting, a targeted treatment, and a follow-up visit to catch newly hatched bugs. See bed bug control around Randburg.

Mice in complexes

Droppings in the bottom drawer, chewed bread bags and noise in the ceiling are typical in complex units in winter. We put lockable bait stations around the outside of the block and traps inside the unit.

Ants in ground-floor units

Ground-floor flats with small gardens get ant trails along skirtings, especially just before the summer rains. Baits that foragers take back to the nest work far better than any spray from the supermarket.

Fleas

Fleas build up quickly in small units with pets, and often show up after a new tenant moves in to a flat where the last tenant had a dog. Treating the floors, the pet and the garden on the same day is the only reliable way to clear them.

Working with body corporates and landlords

For a block or complex, we can treat several units in one visit along with the bin room, stairwells, ducts and garden. That saves money and stops pests being pushed from treated units into untreated ones. Landlords between tenants often book a treatment before the new tenant moves in. For managed buildings we also offer scheduled monitoring with a service record.

Treatments are odourless and non-staining. Tenants don't need to move out; we just ask that children and pets stay off treated surfaces until they're dry.

Before we arrive

A little preparation makes the treatment work better. For cockroaches, clear the cupboards under the sink and next to the stove, and wipe up grease behind the stove and fridge so the gel bait is the most attractive food around. For bed bugs, strip the beds, wash the linen on hot, and leave the furniture where it is so you don't carry bugs to another room. For fleas, vacuum carpets and couches thoroughly just before we come, and book the pet's own flea treatment for the same day. For mice, move stored food in the bottom cupboards into sealed containers.

Where people go wrong

Using a doom-style aerosol on cockroaches in a flat seems sensible, but it drives them into the walls and the neighbour's kitchen, and the colony survives. Gel bait looks like it's doing nothing for a few days, and then the numbers fall away.

A tip for Ferndale flats

Look at the gap where the sink and stove pipes go through the wall. In many older blocks it's open, and it links straight into the shared duct. Sealing it with a bit of filler cuts off the main cockroach and mouse route between units.

What it costs and why

A bachelor or one-bedroom flat costs less to treat than a three-bedroom house, and a single unit costs less than a whole block, though per unit a block treatment usually works out better value. Bed bugs cost more than ants or cockroaches because they need a closer inspection and a follow-up. You'll find guide "from" prices on our pest control prices page, and we confirm the quote once we know the size and the pest.

Ferndale is part of our Randburg pest control area, and we work regularly in neighbouring Malanshof too.

We're SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36. Jason van Heerden, the owner, has worked in pest control for 25 years. Service within 24 hours is standard, and if a treated pest returns within 3 months, so do we. Call 084 200 2700, or WhatsApp a photo of the bug you've found.

Questions we get asked

How much does it cost to treat a flat in Ferndale?

A small flat costs less than a house, and the price depends on the pest. Bed bugs cost more than cockroaches because of the follow-up visit. Check our price page for guide prices, then we'll confirm.

Should the whole block be treated, not just my flat?

For cockroaches and mice, yes, if possible. They move through shared ducts and ceilings, so treating the block together stops them coming back from next door.

I'm a tenant. Who pays for pest control?

That depends on your lease and the cause. Many landlords treat between tenants. We can give you a written report to show your landlord or body corporate.

How do I prepare for a bed bug treatment?

Wash and tumble-dry bedding on hot, clear clutter from around the bed and under it, and don't move furniture to another room. We'll send a short checklist when you book.

Is the cockroach gel safe in a kitchen?

Yes. It's placed in cracks and hinges where cockroaches hide, not on food surfaces, and in tiny amounts.

How long before the cockroaches are gone?

You'll see dead and dying cockroaches within days, and numbers usually drop sharply within two weeks. Heavy infestations may need a follow-up.

Can you come after hours for a business?

Ask us when you call. Restaurants and shops on the main roads often need treatments outside trading hours, and we'll try to fit around that.
