Mouse control in Soweto is about finding the small gaps and the easy food that let house mice settle indoors. We inspect the kitchen, storerooms and backyard rooms, set traps where the mice run, use lockable bait stations where bait suits, and show you what to seal so the next family of mice can't follow.
Why mice are a winter story here
House mice live comfortably outside in summer, in long grass, rubble and storerooms. Then the Highveld winter arrives. From about May, nights in Soweto drop to near freezing, and mice head for warmth: behind the fridge and stove, inside the kitchen cupboard, under the bath panel, in the ceiling above a room where a heater runs every night. Most of our mouse calls in Soweto come between late autumn and August, although spaza shops and takeaways get them all year round.
How small a gap is too small?
Almost none. A young mouse can squeeze through a hole roughly the width of a pencil. The places we find them getting in most often:
- The gap under an outside door, especially a kitchen or back door that has worn at the bottom.
- Holes where the water pipe, the drain or the electrical cable comes through the wall.
- The join between the original house and an extension, where the two walls or roofs meet and never quite sealed.
- Gaps under roof sheeting along the top of the wall, where there's no proper ceiling or the ceiling boards have moved.
- Broken air bricks and vents low down on the outside walls.
Signs it's mice and not rats
Mouse droppings are small, like dark grains of rice, and you'll find them scattered in drawers, along shelves and on top of cupboards. Mice nibble rather than gnaw, so bread, biscuits and packets show small, neat holes. You might hear light scratching in the ceiling or a wall at night, much softer than the heavy running of a rat. A musty smell in a cupboard is another giveaway. If the droppings are much bigger and you're finding burrows outside, it's more likely rats; our page on rats in Soweto explains that problem.
Spaza shops and food stores
A spaza shop is just about the perfect mouse habitat: bags of maize meal, sugar and flour stacked on the floor, bread delivered daily, sweets and snacks at mouse height, and a back room that doesn't get disturbed. Mice contaminate far more than they eat, so one family of mice can spoil a lot of stock. For shops we combine trapping and secured bait stations with stock advice, and offer scheduled monitoring with a written service record if you want proof for a health inspection.
Our approach
- Inspection. We look for droppings, nibbled packaging, nests made of shredded paper or fabric, and the gaps they use.
- Trapping indoors. Traps along the walls and behind appliances, where mice run, catch them without anything dying out of reach inside a wall.
- Bait stations where they suit. Lockable, tamper-resistant stations in storerooms, roof spaces and outside, out of reach of children and pets.
- Proofing. We point out every gap that needs sealing with steel wool and filler, a door brush, or mesh over vents.
- Follow-up to check traps and stations and confirm the activity has stopped.
What people often get wrong
Setting one trap in the middle of the kitchen floor and waiting. Mice don't cross open floors if they can help it; they run along edges, behind and under things. Traps need to sit flat against the wall, on the routes they use, and you need several at once. The other mistake is a cat. A cat might catch a few, but it won't stop mice nesting inside a cupboard or ceiling it can't reach.
A tip for Soweto kitchens
Pull the stove and fridge out once a month and sweep behind them. Spilt pap, crumbs and the warmth from the motor make that small strip of floor the favourite feeding spot for mice in many Soweto homes, and it's the one place nobody cleans.
What mouse control costs
For most homes it's a small to medium job. The price depends on how many rooms are involved, whether we need to work in the roof space, how many traps and stations the property needs, and how many follow-up visits it takes. Shops and food businesses on a monitoring contract are quoted on the site and the number of visits. Our guide prices for pest control show the starting figure. If you've seen one mouse once, a couple of well-placed traps may be all you need, and we'll say so.

Questions we get asked
How much does it cost to get rid of mice?
For a normal home it's usually a modest job. The price depends on how many rooms and storerooms are involved, whether the roof needs work, and the number of follow-ups. We quote after a look.
Why do mice come in every winter?
They're looking for warmth and food when Highveld nights turn cold. Unless the gaps are sealed, each winter brings a new group in through the same routes.
Are traps or poison better for mice?
Indoors, traps. They work fast and nothing dies inside a wall where it starts to smell. Bait in lockable stations suits storerooms, roofs and outside areas.
Is mouse control safe in a home with a baby?
Yes. Traps and lockable stations are placed out of reach, and no loose bait is used in living areas.
Can mice damage electrical wiring?
Yes, they chew cables, which can cause faults and is a fire risk. Tell us if lights or plugs have started failing in a room where you've seen droppings.
Do I need to throw away food the mice have touched?
Yes. Anything with nibble holes or droppings nearby should go, and keep the rest in sealed containers until the problem is cleared.
