Bed bugs close up, treated by our bed bug control in Soweto

Bed bug control in Soweto takes a careful inspection, a thorough treatment of every bed, couch and crack they hide in, and a follow-up visit to catch the bugs that hatch afterwards. We treat each affected room, including backyard rooms on the same stand, and give you a clear preparation list so nothing gets missed.

How bed bugs get into Soweto homes

Bed bugs have nothing to do with how clean a home is. They're hitchhikers that travel in belongings and feed on people while they sleep. In Soweto we most often trace them to:

  • Second-hand furniture. A bed base, a mattress or a lounge suite bought cheaply or passed on from family can carry a whole colony in its seams and joints.
  • Travel and visitors. A bag that's been in an infested room elsewhere, a relative visiting from another province, or a child home from a boarding school or residence.
  • Tenants moving between rooms. Backyard rooms that change occupants often, where a mattress or suitcase brings bugs in and they spread through shared walls.
  • Shared sleeping spaces. Where several family members share a room, bugs have more hosts and move between beds and floor mattresses quickly.

Signs that it's bed bugs

  • Bites in a row or a cluster, often on arms, neck and shoulders, that appear overnight.
  • Tiny black or rust-coloured spots on the sheets, the mattress seams or the bed base. These are droppings and digested blood.
  • Pale, empty skins shed by growing bugs, and small white eggs in seams and joints.
  • The bugs themselves: flat, oval and reddish-brown, about the size of an apple pip when adult.
  • In bad cases, a sweet, musty smell in the room.

Not everyone reacts to the bites, so one person in a room may be covered while another has nothing. It's still bed bugs.

Where they hide, and why that matters

Bed bugs live within a couple of metres of where people sleep. Mattress seams and the underside of the bed base are obvious. But we also find them in the screw holes of a bed frame, behind a headboard, along skirting boards, inside wall cracks and plug points, in the folds of curtains and in the joints of a couch. In older homes with cracked plaster and gaps where the wall meets the ceiling board, they spread into the walls themselves. A treatment that only sprays the mattress misses most of them.

Our treatment process

  1. Inspection. We confirm it's bed bugs (bird mites, fleas and other biters can look similar) and check every room where people sleep or sit for long periods, including backyard rooms.
  2. Preparation. We give you a list beforehand: wash bedding and clothes on a hot cycle, bag clean items, clear under the beds and pull furniture away from walls.
  3. Treatment. We treat mattresses, bed bases, frames, couches, skirting boards, cracks and other harbourages with registered products suited to the job.
  4. Follow-up visit. Eggs aren't killed by every treatment, so we come back after they've had time to hatch and treat again before the young bugs can breed.

You don't need to move out for a normal bed bug treatment. Stay out of treated rooms until the surfaces are dry, and keep children and pets off them until then.

What people get wrong

Throwing the mattress out and buying a new one, without treating the room. The new mattress is reinfested within days from the bed base, the walls and the couch. The other common mistake is moving to sleep in another room or on the couch, which just spreads the bugs further through the house. Stay in your bed until we've treated, so the bugs stay in one place.

Our article on how to get rid of bed bugs explains the preparation in more detail.

A tip for Soweto households

Before any second-hand bed, mattress or couch comes into the house, check it outside in daylight. Turn it over and look closely at the seams, corners and joints for dark spots, shed skins or live bugs. Five minutes on the stoep can save the whole house from an infestation.

What bed bug treatment costs

The cost depends on how many rooms and beds are affected, how much furniture needs treating, and whether the infestation has spread into walls. Because bed bugs nearly always need a follow-up, that second visit is part of the job. One bedroom with an early infestation is far less work than a house plus two backyard rooms. Our bed bug and general pest control prices show where treatments start, and we'll quote after the inspection.

Questions we get asked

How much does bed bug treatment cost?

It depends on the number of rooms, beds and couches involved and how far the bugs have spread. The follow-up visit is part of the job. We quote after inspecting.

Do I have to throw my mattress away?

Usually not. Most mattresses can be treated. Throwing one out without treating the room just means the new mattress gets infested.

How many visits does it take?

Normally two: the main treatment, then a follow-up after the eggs have hatched. Severe or spread-out infestations sometimes need a third.

Can I sleep in my bed after treatment?

Yes, once the treated surfaces are dry. Sleeping in your own bed actually helps, because the bugs come out and cross the treated areas.

Will bed bugs spread to my neighbours or backyard tenants?

They can, through shared walls and belongings. If people in other rooms are getting bitten, treat those rooms at the same time.

Is bed bug treatment safe for babies?

Yes, when it's applied properly. Keep babies, children and pets out of treated rooms until surfaces are dry, and wash bedding before using it again.

What should I do before you arrive?

Wash all bedding and clothes from the room on a hot cycle, bag them, clear under the beds and move furniture away from the walls.
