Flea control in Soweto

Bites around the ankles, a dog that won't stop scratching, tiny black insects jumping on the floor. In Soweto, fleas mostly breed in the yard and ride in on the dog.

Fleas on a carpet, treated by our flea control in Soweto

Flea control in Soweto has to cover the house, the yard and the pets at the same time. We treat floors, bedding areas and the sandy, shady spots where flea larvae develop outside, and ask you to have your animals treated by a vet on the same day, so the fleas have nowhere left to breed and bounce back from.

Why fleas do so well in Soweto yards

Most adult fleas you see are only a small part of the population. The rest are eggs, larvae and pupae lying in dust, sand, carpets and bedding. Flea larvae like dark, dry-ish, sheltered places with organic debris, and many Soweto yards provide exactly that: bare sandy ground, the shade under a stoep, the gap under a backyard room raised off the ground, the dog's favourite sleeping hole against a wall, and a kennel full of old blankets.

Dogs are kept in many Soweto yards for security, often several at a time, and cats roam between properties. Each animal carries fleas from one yard to the next. Stray animals sleeping under cars or in unused rooms add to it. And fleas peak in the warm, humid summer months, when eggs develop quickest and adults hatch in large numbers.

Signs of a flea problem

  • Small, itchy red bites on ankles and lower legs, often in groups.
  • Dogs and cats scratching, biting at their back or tail, or losing patches of fur.
  • Dark specks in the pet's coat that turn red when placed on a damp tissue. That's flea dirt, which is digested blood.
  • Tiny dark insects jumping onto white socks when you walk across a room or the yard.
  • A sudden burst of bites after moving into an empty room or house, when dormant fleas hatch in response to footsteps and warmth.

Why it's worth acting quickly

Flea bites are more than itchy. Children scratch them open, and broken skin can become infected, especially in summer. Some people and many dogs are allergic to flea saliva and react badly to only a few bites. Fleas can also pass tapeworm to dogs and cats when the animals swallow them while grooming. And a flea population grows fast in warm weather: a few fleas noticed in November can be hundreds by January if the yard is left untreated.

The empty room surprise

This catches a lot of people in Soweto. A backyard room stands empty for a few weeks after a tenant with a dog moves out. The new tenant moves in and is bitten all over within a day. Flea pupae can sit dormant in a room for weeks and hatch all at once when they sense vibration and body heat. If you're letting out a room that previously had pets, have it treated before the new person moves in.

How we treat fleas

  1. Inspection. We find where the animals sleep and spend time, inside and out, because that's where the larvae are.
  2. Indoor treatment. Floors, carpets, under beds and furniture, and pet sleeping areas get an odourless, non-staining residual treatment that targets adults and developing stages.
  3. Yard treatment. We treat shaded sand, the areas under stoeps and raised rooms, kennels and the dogs' resting spots.
  4. Pets on the same day. We don't treat animals ourselves; your vet or pet shop can supply a registered flea product. Doing it on the same day stops the animals bringing fleas straight back.
  5. Follow-up if it's a heavy infestation, because some pupae resist treatment until they hatch.

Keep children and pets off treated areas until they've dried, and then life carries on as normal.

What people get wrong

Treating only the dog. A flea collar or a dip kills the fleas on the animal, but the hundreds of eggs and larvae in the yard keep hatching and jumping back on. The other mistake is mopping the floor straight after we've treated. Vacuum instead, and leave the treatment in place to work on new hatchlings.

A local tip

Swap old blankets in the kennel for something you can wash, and wash it in hot water every week through summer. Then rake out and replace the sand in the dog's favourite digging spot by the wall. Those two habits take away the biggest flea nursery in most Soweto yards.

What flea treatment costs

The price depends on how big the house and yard are, how many rooms need treating, and whether a follow-up visit is needed. A small house with one dog is a modest job. A large stand with several dogs, kennels and backyard rooms takes more product and time. See our pest control pricing for the guide "from" price. A light flea problem caught early is sometimes solved by treating the pet and washing its bedding, and we'll be upfront about that.

Questions we get asked

How much does flea treatment cost?

It depends on the size of the house and yard and how many rooms and kennels need treating. A small home with one dog is a modest job. We confirm after inspecting.

Do you treat the dog as well?

No, we treat the house and yard. Your vet or pet shop can supply a registered flea product, and it works best when the animals are treated on the same day as the property.

Why am I still seeing fleas a week after treatment?

Pupae that were protected during treatment are still hatching. They die when they land on treated surfaces, so keep vacuuming and the numbers will drop.

Is flea treatment safe for my children?

Yes, when used correctly. Keep children off treated floors and yard areas until they're dry, and then they can play as normal.

Can fleas live in my bed?

They can visit, but they don't usually breed in beds the way bed bugs do. Fleas breed where pets sleep, in carpets, bedding and the yard.

Should I treat a room before a new tenant moves in?

Yes, if the previous occupant had pets. Dormant fleas can hatch all at once when someone moves in.
