Fly control in Roodepoort homes and food businesses

Flies on the kitchen counter all day, clouds of them around the bins after a long weekend, a restaurant kitchen that can't keep them out. Find the breeding spot, and the flies drop.

Flesh fly on a ledge, treated by our fly control in Roodepoort

Fly control in Roodepoort works when you find and remove the breeding source, then treat the places flies rest. We inspect bins, refuse areas, compost, pet areas and drains, treat resting surfaces with an odourless residual product, use fly baits where suitable, and advise on screens and bin management. For food businesses, we set up regular, recorded treatments.

Why flies are a summer problem here

House flies breed fast in warm weather. A single female can lay hundreds of eggs in rotting food, manure or wet organic waste, and in the heat of a Highveld summer those eggs can become adult flies in about a week. Roodepoort's family homes, with dogs, compost heaps, wheelie bins in the sun, and refuse collections that sometimes run late after public holidays, give flies plenty of places to breed. Homes near smallholdings, horse paddocks or open ground may also get flies from further afield.

The flies we see most

  • House flies: grey flies with four dark stripes on the back, breeding in rubbish, manure and rotting food. The main problem around homes, kitchens and restaurants.
  • Blowflies: shiny green or blue flies drawn to meat, dead animals and bins. A sudden burst indoors can mean a dead rat or bird in the roof or wall.
  • Fruit flies: tiny flies around fruit bowls, bins, drains and beer or juice spills, common in kitchens, bars and restaurants.
  • Drain flies: small, fuzzy, moth-like flies that breed in the slime inside drains and appear around basins and showers.

How we treat flies

We start by finding where they're breeding. That's usually outside: bins, the refuse area, the compost heap, dog runs, a blocked drain or rotting fruit under a tree. Indoors, a sudden plague of blowflies sends us looking for a dead animal. Once we know the source, we treat the walls, eaves, ceilings and other surfaces where flies rest with an odourless, non-staining residual product, and place fly baits around bins and refuse areas where appropriate. Drains with drain flies or fruit flies are cleaned and treated. For food businesses, we can also advise on fly screens, air curtains and fly control units.

You don't need to move out. Let treated surfaces dry before children and pets go near them, and cover food and preparation surfaces before we treat indoors.

Restaurants, takeaways and food businesses

For food businesses, flies are a hygiene and inspection issue, not just a nuisance. We set up a monitoring contract with scheduled visits, treat refuse and delivery areas, check drains, advise on screens and door seals, and leave a service record after every visit. That record is what health inspectors look for, and it shows that you're managing the problem rather than reacting to it.

The common mistake

Spraying flies in the kitchen every day while the bins outside are full of maggots. The spray kills a few adults, but hundreds more hatch from the breeding source every day. Clean the bins, bag kitchen waste, keep lids closed and pick up dog mess daily, and the flies drop dramatically.

A Roodepoort tip

In summer, rinse your wheelie bin and the bin area with hot water and a little dishwashing liquid once a week, and keep the bin in shade if you can. A sun-baked bin with old food scraps is the most common fly breeding spot we find in Roodepoort gardens, especially after a long weekend when collections slip.

Maggots

If you're finding maggots in bins, on the kitchen floor or coming out of the ceiling, flies have already found a breeding site. Maggots in a ceiling or wall almost always mean a dead rodent or bird. We'll find and remove the source and treat the area so the flies don't emerge in the house.

What fly control costs, and why

The cost depends on the size of the property, how many breeding sources there are, whether indoor and outdoor areas both need treating, and for businesses, how often visits are needed. A home with a bin problem is a fairly small job, and often good bin hygiene alone solves it, which we'll tell you. Restaurants and food factories are quoted per site. You'll find the guide "from" price on this page, and the full range on our price guide for Johannesburg.

Questions we get asked

How much does fly control cost?

It depends on the size of the property, how many breeding sources there are and, for businesses, how often visits are needed. A home with a bin problem is a fairly small job.

Why are there suddenly so many flies in my house?

Usually a breeding source nearby, such as a bin, compost or dog mess. A sudden burst of shiny blowflies indoors often means a dead rodent or bird in the roof or a wall.

Is fly treatment safe in a kitchen?

Yes. We cover food and preparation surfaces before treating and use products suitable for kitchens. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until dry.

Can you help my restaurant pass a health inspection?

We set up a monitoring contract with scheduled visits and a written service record after each one, which is what inspectors look for.

How long does a fly treatment last?

The residual treatment keeps working on resting surfaces for weeks, and our fly treatments carry a 3-month guarantee, as long as the breeding source is dealt with.

How do I get rid of tiny flies around my sink?

These are usually drain flies or fruit flies. Cleaning the slime from the drain and removing overripe fruit and spills normally sorts it out; we can treat stubborn drains.
