Pest control in Linden is mostly about rats drawn to fruit trees and compost, fleas in big shady gardens with dogs, wood borer in older timber, fish moths in cupboards and wasps under the eaves. We look at the whole stand, find what's feeding and sheltering each pest, and treat it where it lives, not just where you see it.
Linden's big stands and old gardens
Linden is an established suburb near Emmarentia and Northcliff, known for its relaxed, village-like high street with cafés and small shops, and for unusually large stands for a suburb so close to the city. Many homes are older houses with deep gardens, big trees and, very often, fruit trees: plums, peaches, figs, citrus and loquats. Plenty of residents keep dogs, chickens or a vegetable patch, and there's a growing number of cottages and flatlets built at the back of stands.
Those big, productive gardens are great for families and terrible for keeping rats away. Fallen fruit, chicken feed and compost are a buffet, and long hedges and creepers give cover all the way to the roof. Because stands are so big, a pest problem can also go unnoticed for a long time at the far end of the garden, around an old shed or a back cottage, before anyone in the main house sees a sign of it.
What we treat in Linden
Rats and fruit trees
Fruit season brings rats out in numbers. Roof rats climb the trees to feed and then cross to the roof. Brown rats feed on windfalls and chicken feed and burrow under sheds. We bait in lockable stations, placed where chickens and dogs can't reach them, trap in the roof if needed and point out the gaps to close. For the method see rat control across Johannesburg.
Fleas
A big lawn, shady trees, a couple of dogs and summer warmth make Linden one of the busier places for flea calls. Fleas spend most of their life cycle in the soil and bedding, not on the pet. We treat the garden, the kennel and sleeping areas and the house, while you treat the pets with a vet-recommended product. Our flea treatments in the Northcliff area give more detail.
Wood borer
Older Linden homes often have original pine floors, timber ceilings or exposed roof beams, plus old furniture brought in over the years. Small round holes and little piles of fine, pale dust mean borer is active. We treat the affected timber directly. See wood borer treatment in Johannesburg.
Fish moths
Cupboards against cool outside walls, bookshelves and boxes of old papers in the garage are classic fish moth habitat. They're harmless to people but damage books, photos and clothes. A dust or spray into cupboard voids and along skirting sorts them out, and moving stored papers from cardboard boxes into sealed plastic crates stops them coming back.
Wasps
Paper wasps build under eaves, in the fruit trees and inside garden sheds, and they're drawn to ripe fruit in late summer. We remove nests and treat the spot so they don't return.
How a Linden visit runs
We start at the bottom of the garden and work towards the house, because that's the direction most pests travel. We look at fruit trees, compost, chicken runs, sheds, back cottages, the roof line and the inside of the house. Then we treat. Treatments are odourless and don't leave marks, and you can stay at home throughout; children and animals just wait until sprayed surfaces are dry before using them. If you keep chickens, tell us, and we'll keep stations and sprays well clear of the run.
The usual mistake
Leaving windfall fruit on the ground "for the birds". It feeds rats far more than birds, and it brings fruit flies and wasps too. Pick up fallen fruit every day or two in season and the rat pressure drops noticeably.
A Linden tip
Keep chicken feed in a metal bin with a tight lid, and feed the chickens only what they'll finish in a day. Leftover feed in the run is the single biggest reason Linden gardens with chickens have rats.
What it costs and why
The size of the stand is a big factor in Linden, because gardens are large. Flea treatments are priced on the garden and house area. Rat control depends on the number of stations and how many follow-ups it takes in fruit season. Wood borer is quoted on how much timber is affected. Fish moths and wasps are quick, modest jobs. Our pest control price list shows guide "from" prices, and we'll quote after a look.
Linden is served by our pest control for Northcliff and surrounding suburbs, and we also treat homes in nearby Emmarentia.
Jason van Heerden owns and runs Combat Pest Control, with 25 years of experience behind him. We're SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture (Act 36), we offer service within 24 hours, and if the treated pest is back within three months, so are we. Give us a ring on 084 200 2700, or WhatsApp a photo of the pest or the damage.
Questions we get asked
What does pest control cost on a big Linden stand?
It depends on the pest and the size of the garden. Flea and rat work on large stands takes longer than on small ones. Our price page shows guide prices, and we quote after seeing the property.
Is rat bait safe if I keep chickens?
Yes, when it's inside lockable stations placed away from the run. Chickens can't get into the stations, and we'll site them carefully.
Why do my fleas keep coming back?
Most of the flea population lives in the garden soil and bedding, not on the pet. Treating the garden, house and pets on the same day breaks the cycle.
Can you treat wood borer in old furniture?
Yes, we can treat affected furniture as well as floors and roof timbers. Very badly damaged pieces may need repair afterwards.
Do I need to leave home for the treatment?
No. You can stay. Just keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they've dried.
How long does a flea treatment last?
Usually through the season if pets are treated at the same time. Our general treatments carry a 3-month guarantee.
