Bed bug control in Northcliff covers homes, rental units, student digs and guest accommodation around the ridge. Bed bugs hide in mattress seams, bed frames, skirtings and plug points, so we inspect each room carefully, treat every harbourage with registered products and come back for a follow-up visit to catch any eggs that hatch afterwards.
Bed bugs don't care where you live
A ridge-top house with a view is just as likely to get bed bugs as a student room. They have nothing to do with dirt or the suburb's trees and soil. They arrive with people: in suitcases after a trip, in second-hand furniture, on a visitor's bag, in a laptop case from a shared office. What the area does shape is how quickly they spread.
Around Northcliff that means rentals and shared housing. Auckland Park and Melville have plenty of student digs, flats and cottages let room by room, where tenants move in and out often and furniture is passed on. Guesthouses and short-term lets see a constant stream of travellers. And larger family homes have their own risk: children back from boarding school or camp, and guests' luggage left on spare-room beds.
How to tell it's bed bugs
- Bites in lines or small clusters on skin exposed during sleep: arms, shoulders, neck, legs. Some people don't react at all, so one partner may have bites and the other none.
- Dark spots on mattress seams, sheets and the bed frame, which are droppings of digested blood.
- Small blood smears on sheets from bugs crushed during the night.
- Shed skins and eggs, pale and tiny, in seams, joints of the bed frame and behind the headboard.
- The bugs themselves: flat, oval and brown, about the size of an apple seed, swollen and redder after feeding.
Fleas and mites can cause similar bites, so we always confirm the insect before we treat.
Our process
- Room-by-room inspection. We strip the bed and check seams, the base, the frame, the headboard, bedside tables, skirtings, curtain folds, plug points and picture frames. We also check neighbouring rooms, because bed bugs move.
- Preparation. We'll give you a checklist beforehand: wash bedding and clothing from affected rooms on a hot cycle, dry them on hot, and bag them until treatment is done.
- Treatment. Registered products are applied to every harbourage, including seams, joints, cracks and voids, with odourless, non-staining formulations where they're used on fabric and furniture.
- Follow-up visit. Bed bug eggs aren't reliably killed by the first treatment. A return visit after they've hatched, before the young bugs can breed, is what finishes the job.
You don't need to move out for a normal treatment. Children and pets should stay out of treated rooms until the surfaces have dried.
Landlords, guesthouses and digs
In shared housing, treating one room is rarely enough. Bed bugs travel along walls, through gaps around pipes and in tenants' belongings, so we usually inspect the rooms around the affected one and treat those that show activity. For guesthouses and short-term lets, we can schedule inspections between guests and give you a written record of the treatment.
The mistake that spreads them
Moving to the couch or the spare room. Bed bugs follow the person they feed on, and within a week or two you have two infested rooms instead of one. The second common mistake is throwing out the mattress. A new mattress in an untreated room is reinfested within days, and the old one, dragged through the house, can drop bugs along the way. Stay put, and let us treat the room.
A local tip
If you're a student or tenant moving into digs, check the mattress seams and the bed frame joints with a torch before you unpack. Five minutes on day one can save weeks of trouble, and it settles any argument about who brought them.
What bed bug control costs, and why
The main factors are the number of rooms affected, how much furniture is involved, how heavy the infestation is and the follow-up visit, which is always part of a proper bed bug job. A single bedroom caught early is a manageable job; a whole house of rooms in a student let costs more. The starting price is shown on our prices page for Johannesburg. Bed bugs are one pest where DIY sprays rarely succeed, mostly because of the eggs.
See bed bug control across Johannesburg for more, and our guide on how to get rid of bed bugs for preparation tips. We treat bed bugs in Rosebank hotels and flats too, and our Auckland Park pest control page covers student housing near the university. Our full local list is on the Northcliff pest control page.
Combat Pest Control is owned by Jason van Heerden, who has 25 years of pest control experience. We're SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36, we offer service within 24 hours, and treatments carry a 3-month guarantee. Questions we get asked
Do I have to throw away my mattress?
Usually not. Most mattresses can be treated, and a new one in an untreated room gets reinfested quickly. We'll tell you if a mattress is too badly damaged to keep.
How much does bed bug treatment cost?
It depends on the number of rooms, the amount of furniture and how heavy the infestation is, and it includes the follow-up visit. Our price guide shows the starting price.
Can I sleep in the room after treatment?
Yes, once the treated surfaces are dry. Sleeping in the same bed helps, because bed bugs come out to feed and contact the treatment.
Why do I need a second visit?
The first treatment doesn't reliably kill eggs. The follow-up visit catches the young bugs after they hatch and before they can lay eggs of their own.
How do I prepare for the treatment?
Wash bedding and clothing from affected rooms on hot, dry them on hot, bag them, and clear the floor around the bed. We'll send you a checklist when you book.
Are bed bugs a sign of a dirty home?
No. They feed on blood, not dirt, and they travel with people and their belongings. Clean homes get them just as easily.
Can bed bugs spread to the room next door?
Yes. They move along walls, through gaps and in belongings. That's why we inspect neighbouring rooms too.
