Bird mite control in Midrand

Tiny specks on the bedroom ceiling, itchy bites at night, birds nesting under the solar panels. In Midrand, bird mites usually start in the roof.

Nesting birds that carry bird mites into Midrand roofs

Bird mite control in Midrand means removing the source as well as the mites. These tiny mites come from pigeon, myna or sparrow nests in roofs, gutters and under solar panels. We find and remove the nest, treat the roof space and the affected rooms, and advise on bird proofing so the birds cannot nest there again.

How bird mites end up in Midrand bedrooms

Birds love Midrand buildings. Pigeons and Indian mynas nest in roof spaces, behind fascia boards, in gutters and on the ledges of office park buildings, and sparrows squeeze into any gap under roof tiles. Over the last few years solar panels have added a new favourite spot: the sheltered gap between the panels and the roof, which is dry, warm and hard for people to reach.

Bird mites live in those nests and feed on the chicks. The trouble begins when the chicks fledge, the nest is abandoned or the birds are chased away. Thousands of hungry mites leave the nest looking for a new host and find their way through ceiling gaps, light fittings, air vents and around window frames into the rooms below. They cannot live long on people, but they do bite, and they can make a bedroom unbearable for weeks.

Is it bird mites, bed bugs or something else?

Bird mites are often mistaken for bed bugs, fleas or even skin conditions. Clues that point to bird mites:

  • Tiny, moving specks, smaller than a pinhead, crawling on walls, ceilings, window sills or bedding, often near a light fitting or a vent.
  • Itchy bites or a crawling feeling on the skin, often at night, with no larger insects to be found.
  • Activity in rooms directly below where birds have been nesting in the roof or behind the gutters.
  • Recently fledged chicks, a removed nest or birds that have stopped coming to the roof.

If you find flat, apple-pip-sized brown bugs in the mattress seams instead, see our page on bed bug treatment in Midrand, which is a different problem.

Our approach

1. Find the nest

We inspect the roof space, gutters, fascias, eaves and solar panel areas to find the active or abandoned nest, and check which rooms are affected.

2. Remove and treat the nest site

The nest material is removed and bagged, and the nest site and surrounding roof space are treated to kill mites left behind. Leaving the nest in place guarantees more mites.

3. Treat the affected rooms

We treat the rooms where mites have come through, focusing on ceilings, cornices, light fittings, vents, window frames, skirting and the area around beds. Treatments are odourless and non-staining, and you can stay at home; just let surfaces dry before children or pets touch them.

4. Bird proofing

We advise on and arrange bird proofing to stop the birds coming back: spikes on ledges, netting, sealing gaps under roof tiles and fascias, and mesh around solar panels. Our page on bird proofing for Johannesburg homes and buildings covers the options.

The mistake that starts the problem

Chasing the birds away or knocking out a nest without dealing with the mites. Removing the hosts is exactly what drives the mites into the house. It is far better to plan nest removal, mite treatment and bird proofing as one job.

A Midrand tip

If you have solar panels on your roof, have the edges meshed when they are installed or at the next service. Pigeons and mynas find the gap under panels within months, and mesh is much easier to fit before a nest is established.

Offices and complexes

Office parks with ledges, signage and covered parking often have large pigeon populations, and staff can be bitten in offices below roosting areas. In complexes, one nest above a shared roof can affect several units. We inspect the whole building and plan nest removal, treatment and proofing together.

What bird mite treatment costs, and why

The cost depends on how many nests there are, how hard they are to reach (roof spaces, gutters, under solar panels), how many rooms need treatment and how much bird proofing is needed. A single nest above one bedroom is a fairly small job; several nests on a double-storey house or office block with proofing takes more work. See our pest control price guide for a starting point and the guide "from" price on this page. Bird proofing is quoted separately, based on the size of the area.

We see a lot of bird mite activity in the complexes around Carlswald and nearby. Our Sandton bird mite treatments follow the same steps, and more on the problem across the city is on bird mite control in Johannesburg. For other local pests, see pest control for Midrand.

Questions we get asked

How much does bird mite treatment cost?

It depends on the number of nests, how hard they are to reach, how many rooms need treatment and whether bird proofing is needed. A single nest above one room is a small job. We quote after inspecting.

Can bird mites live on people?

No. They bite people but cannot complete their life cycle on humans. Without birds they die off, but they can cause weeks of discomfort before that.

Why did the mites appear after the birds left?

When chicks fledge or a nest is abandoned, the mites lose their food source and move into the house looking for a new host.

Do I need to leave the house during treatment?

No. Stay put; the only precaution is letting treated ceilings, sills and skirting dry before little hands or paws touch them.

How do I stop birds nesting under my solar panels?

Fit mesh around the panel edges so birds cannot get underneath. It is best done before nests are established, or after nests are removed and the area is treated.

Will the bites stop after treatment?

Bites usually drop sharply within a few days once the nest is removed and the rooms are treated. A few remaining mites may take a little longer to die off.
