Pest control in Rabie Ridge, from the yard to the house

In Rabie Ridge most pest problems start in the yard: rats under the paving, fleas where the dog sleeps, termites in the lawn. Fix the yard and the house usually follows.

Pest control technician treating a home in Rabie Ridge

Pest control in Rabie Ridge is mostly a yard-and-house job. Rats burrow under paving and outbuildings, fleas and ticks come in on dogs, German cockroaches settle in kitchens, ants arrive with the rains and harvester termites eat the lawn in winter. We find where each one starts, treat it there, and protect the house.

The kind of suburb Rabie Ridge is

Rabie Ridge lies on the eastern edge of Midrand, right beside Ivory Park, with Tembisa a short drive away. It's mainly freestanding family homes on modest stands, many of them extended over the years with an extra bedroom, a garage turned into a room or a flatlet at the back. Most homes have a walled yard with a dog, a washing line, a vegetable patch or a strip of lawn, and there's open veld and undeveloped ground on parts of the edge.

Because the houses are separate and each owner controls their own yard, Rabie Ridge pest problems are very fixable. You don't have to persuade a whole complex. If you deal with the rubble pile, the dog's sleeping spot and the gap under the back door, most of the trouble goes away.

Pests Rabie Ridge families call us about

Rats under paving and in outbuildings

Brown rats dig in where soil meets paving, under garden sheds, under old doors lying flat and inside heaps of leftover building material. They come out at night for dog food and kitchen scraps. We bait in tamper-resistant stations against the boundary wall and near burrows, and we point out which heaps and gaps to clear. Our rat control in Midrand page goes into the detail.

Fleas and ticks

A yard dog that sleeps in the same dusty corner every day is the perfect flea factory. Eggs drop into the soil, hatch in warm weather and jump onto the next warm body, which is often a child playing outside. Ticks come in from the veld edges and long grass. We treat the yard, the kennel area and the house on the same day, and ask you to treat the dog with a vet product at the same time, otherwise the cycle starts again within weeks.

Cockroaches

German cockroaches in the kitchen and bigger American cockroaches coming up from drains and outside toilets in summer. The first is a gel bait job; the second needs drains and manholes treated as well as the house.

Ants

Ant trails across the kitchen counter just before a storm are a Highveld tradition. Baits taken back to the nest are better than spraying the trail, which only splits the colony into two nests.

Harvester termites

From about May to September, look for bare patches in the lawn with small round holes and little piles of loose soil and cut grass. That's harvester termites, and it can strip a small lawn completely in one dry season. Treating the active holes lets the workers carry the product down to the colony. Our Johannesburg termite treatment page explains both lawn and building termites.

How a visit goes

We look at the yard first, then the house. In most Rabie Ridge homes we can tell within ten minutes where the rats are nesting and where the fleas are breeding. Then we treat: stations along the wall, residual spray in the yard and along skirting boards, gel bait in the kitchen, and the lawn if termites are active. You stay at home throughout. Our sprays are odourless and won't mark walls or floors; we just ask that children and pets stay off treated areas until they are dry.

What often goes wrong

Treating the dog for fleas but not the yard, or the yard but not the dog. Each one on its own gives you a quiet week before the fleas are back. Do both together, and wash the dog's bedding on a hot cycle the same day.

Rabie Ridge tip

Lift anything lying flat on the soil, such as old doors, sheets of zinc and offcuts of board, and either stack them on bricks or get rid of them. Rats, scorpions and termites all love the dark, damp gap underneath, and clearing it costs nothing.

What it costs and why

Most Rabie Ridge jobs are for a single house and yard, so the price comes down to which pests we're treating and how big the yard is. A flea and tick treatment of house and yard is a moderate job; rats may need one or two follow-up visits to check stations; lawn termite treatment depends on the size of the lawn. You can see guide "from" prices on our prices page for Johannesburg, and we'll give a firm quote on site. A single ant trail? A shop bait might be all you need.

Questions we get asked

What does pest control cost for a house in Rabie Ridge?

It depends on the pests and the size of the yard. Fleas, rats and lawn termites are each priced differently. Our price page lists guide "from" prices, and we quote on site.

Why do the fleas keep coming back after I treat my dog?

Because the eggs and larvae live in the soil and bedding, not on the dog. The yard, the kennel and the house need treating on the same day as the dog.

Is it safe for my children to play outside after treatment?

Yes, once the treated areas are dry. We'll show you which areas we treated, and rat bait stays locked inside stations.

How do I know it's harvester termites in my lawn?

Bare patches in winter with small round holes, loose soil heaps and short pieces of cut grass. Send us a photo on WhatsApp if you're unsure.

How long does a rat treatment take to work?

Usually one to two weeks for activity to drop. We may return to check the stations and top up bait if the rats are still feeding.

Do I have to move out for the treatment?

No. Normal insect and rodent treatments don't require you to leave. Only gas fumigation does, and homes rarely need it.
