Pest control in Randjesfontein smallholdings

Big plots, outbuildings, boreholes and veld between the houses: Randjesfontein has more space for pests to hide than a suburb, and needs a plan that covers the whole property.

Pest control in Randjesfontein means treating a whole plot, not just a house. On these Midrand smallholdings the usual culprits are rats in sheds and stores, scorpions in rock walls, subterranean termites in poles and outbuildings, harvester termites in paddocks, wasps under eaves and moles in big lawns. We inspect the full property and treat where each pest lives.

Smallholding life on the edge of Midrand

Randjesfontein is one of Midrand's agricultural holdings areas: big stands measured in hectares rather than square metres, many with a main house, a cottage or two, garages, workshops, stables and staff accommodation. Some owners keep horses, chickens or a few cattle; others simply enjoy the space. There's open grassland, windbreak trees, boreholes and dams on some plots, and dirt tracks between properties.

All of that space gives pests room to build up quietly. A rodent population can grow for months in a store room nobody visits. A termite colony can eat through the bottom of a gum pole carport before anyone notices it leaning. So our first visit to a Randjesfontein property is usually longer than a suburban one, because we walk the outbuildings as well as the house.

The pests that matter here

Rats and mice in outbuildings

Animal feed, seed, stored furniture and cardboard boxes in a garage or barn give rodents food and nesting material all winter. They then move into the house and the roof. We set lockable bait stations around the outbuildings and the house perimeter, placed where dogs, chickens and wildlife can't get to the bait, and recommend sealed metal bins for feed. For the method see rodent control in Johannesburg.

Scorpions

Dry-stone walls, rockeries, wood piles and the gaps under corrugated sheeting are classic scorpion homes on the Highveld. Most local species are more painful than dangerous, but the thick-tailed ones deserve respect. We apply barrier treatments around the house, cottages and staff rooms and treat the main hiding spots. Our scorpion treatments in Midrand page explains which ones to worry about.

Termites in poles, fences and lawns

Smallholdings use a lot of timber: gum poles in carports and lapas, wooden fence posts, stable doors and thatch structures. Subterranean termites work up through the ground into all of these. Harvester termites strip paddocks and lawns in dry winters. We confirm which one it is, then use registered soil treatments or baiting for buildings and nest treatments for grassland. See termite control across Midrand for the details, including our 5-year termite guarantee with a certificate.

Wasps

Paper wasps and the bigger mud-dauber types build under eaves, inside sheds and in the frames of farm gates. We remove nests and treat the area, and where it's honeybees rather than wasps we refer the swarm to a beekeeper where possible.

Moles in big lawns

Raised ridges and heaps of fresh soil across a lawn usually point to golden moles or mole rats, both common in Highveld gardens with deep soil. They're tricky to deal with, but targeted treatment of active runs and traps can bring the damage under control.

How we plan a smallholding treatment

We walk the property with you and sketch where the activity is. Then we suggest a plan: perhaps a once-off barrier and termite treatment, plus a regular rodent service on the outbuildings if there's animal feed on the property. Inside the house you don't need to leave; our sprays are odourless and non-staining, and you keep pets and children away only until treated surfaces dry. If a store room or container needs fumigating for stored-product insects, that's a separate job where the sealed area stays empty until it's cleared.

The mistake people make on plots

Treating the main house and ignoring the outbuildings. Rodents and scorpions are often living in the shed, the workshop or the staff quarters and simply visit the house. Treating only the house leaves their base untouched. The same goes for the cottage you rent out: if the tenant has cockroaches and the main house doesn't, it's only a matter of time before the main house does too, so we prefer to treat every dwelling on the plot in one visit.

A local tip

Stand new wooden poles on a concrete footing or a steel shoe rather than burying the timber straight in the soil, and keep firewood stacked off the ground on a frame. Both make it much harder for termites and scorpions to set up home.

What it costs and why

Smallholdings vary so much that we always quote after a walk-around. The biggest cost drivers are the number of buildings, the perimeter we treat, whether termite work is needed on structures or just on lawns, and how many bait stations a regular rodent service requires. Our price guide shows the "from" prices for each type of treatment.

Questions we get asked

How much does pest control on a smallholding cost?

It depends on the number of buildings, the perimeter and the pests. We walk the plot first and give a written quote. Guide "from" prices are on our price page.

Are the scorpions in Randjesfontein dangerous?

Most are more painful than dangerous. Scorpions with thick tails and thin pincers are the ones to treat with more care. Send us a photo and we'll tell you which kind you have.

Can you treat termites in a gum pole carport?

Yes. We treat the soil around and under the poles and check how far the damage goes. Badly eaten poles may need replacing once the termites are dealt with.

Is rat bait safe around my chickens and dogs?

It's kept in lockable stations that animals can't open, placed along walls and inside sheds away from where chickens forage.

Do you do regular visits for plots with animals?

Yes. A scheduled rodent service with a record of each station suits properties that store animal feed.

What should I do before you arrive?

Make sure we can get into the outbuildings, tie up dogs during the visit, and note where you've seen droppings, scorpions or termite damage.

How long does the scorpion barrier last?

Usually a few months, depending on rain and how much the treated surfaces are disturbed. Our general treatments carry a 3-month guarantee.
