Pest control in Noordwyk complexes and homes

Noordwyk is townhouse country, and pests in complexes behave differently: they share walls, roofs and drains. We treat your unit and, where it helps, the whole complex.

Pest control in Noordwyk is mostly about complex living: German cockroaches through shared walls, ants in kitchens before summer storms, mice in garages, fish moths in built-in cupboards and harvester termites in common lawns. We treat each unit properly, and we work with body corporates when the problem is bigger than one home.

How Noordwyk shapes the problem

Noordwyk is one of Midrand's more compact suburbs, made up largely of townhouse and cluster complexes plus streets of freestanding family homes. A lot of it was built from the 1990s onwards, and it's popular with young families and tenants because it sits close to the offices, shopping and highways that make Midrand convenient. Units are modern, but they're close together, often with a shared roof line, a shared sewer and one long boundary wall around the whole complex.

That changes how pests travel. A cockroach problem in one kitchen can spread through plumbing ducts to the units on either side. Mice that get into one garage can run along the roof void. Ants nest in the common garden and come into whichever kitchen is nearest. So the first question we ask in Noordwyk is whether the neighbours are seeing the same thing.

The usual Noordwyk pests

German cockroaches

Small, fast and light brown, they live in the warm spots of modern kitchens: dishwasher motors, the back of the fridge, hinges of kitchen units and electrical boxes. Tenants moving in and out with second-hand appliances bring them along. Gel bait in those exact hiding places is the method that works; a fogger from the shop simply drives them deeper into the walls. More on our approach at cockroach control in Johannesburg.

Ants

Ant trails under the kitchen door or along the skirting are a classic sign that summer rain is on its way. Pugnacious ants and small black house ants nest under paving in the complex garden. We use baits that workers carry back to the nest, and treat entry points, so the colony dies rather than splits. See ant treatments in Midrand for more.

Mice

Mice get into garages through the gap under the door, then into the kitchen through gaps around pipes. They're more common in units backing onto open ground and in winter. Traps and lockable bait stations, plus a brush strip on the garage door, usually sort it out.

Fish moths

Silver, fast and fond of dark, slightly damp places: bathroom cupboards, the back of built-in wardrobes and boxes of paperwork in the garage. They're harmless but they damage paper, photographs and clothes. A targeted dust or spray into cupboard voids and skirting clears them. Units on the ground floor, or ones with a bathroom against the garden wall, tend to see more of them because the walls stay cooler and damper there.

Harvester termites in common lawns

Complex gardens on the Highveld often show bare patches in winter with tiny holes and soil heaps. That's harvester termites, and because the lawn is common property it's a body-corporate job. Our termite control across Midrand covers lawn and building treatments.

Unit treatments versus whole-complex treatments

If only your unit is affected, we treat your home and you won't need to leave; keep pets and children off sprayed areas until dry and the job is done. But if three or four neighbours are seeing cockroaches or mice, it's far cheaper and more effective for the body corporate to book a whole-complex treatment, including common areas, refuse rooms and the guardhouse. We can then follow up on a schedule and give the trustees a service record. Letting the residents know a week ahead, so everyone clears their kitchen cupboards on the same day, is what makes a complex treatment work well.

Where people go wrong

The most common mistake in complexes is treating one unit and ignoring the rest. The cockroaches simply move next door while the poison is fresh and come back three weeks later. If you're a tenant, tell your managing agent; if you're an owner, raise it with the trustees. A joint treatment lasts much longer.

A Noordwyk tip

Check the gap where the waste pipe goes through the wall under your kitchen sink. In many complex units it's left as a rough hole, and it's the route cockroaches and mice use between units. A bit of filler or a pipe collar closes it.

What it costs and why

For a single townhouse the price mainly depends on which pest it is and how many rooms need treating. Cockroaches in one kitchen cost less than a full-house bed bug or fish moth treatment. Whole-complex jobs are quoted per complex, and the cost per unit is usually lower than individual bookings. You'll find our guide "from" prices on the pest control prices page. If you've seen a couple of ants, a bait from the shop may be enough, and we'll say so.

Questions we get asked

How much does it cost to treat a townhouse in Noordwyk?

It depends on the pest and the number of rooms. A kitchen cockroach treatment is a small job; whole-house work costs more. Complex-wide bookings usually work out cheaper per unit. Guide prices are on our price page.

Should our body corporate treat the whole complex?

If several units have the same pest, yes. Cockroaches and mice move through shared walls and roofs, so treating everyone together gives a far longer result.

Do I need to leave my unit during treatment?

No. Stay home, but keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry.

How long before the cockroaches are gone?

With gel bait, activity drops noticeably within one to two weeks. Heavy infestations may need a follow-up visit to catch the next hatch.

I'm a tenant. Who pays for pest control?

That depends on your lease and the cause. Often the landlord or body corporate covers it. Speak to your managing agent; we can send them a quote and a service record.

What should I do before you arrive?

Clear the cupboards under the sink and around the stove, put food away, and leave the garage accessible if you've seen mice.
