Pest control in Vorna Valley is usually about the problems of an established suburb: roof rats in ceilings, subterranean termites in older timber and buried tree stumps, ants in kitchens, cockroaches in drains and spiders in the garden. We start with an inspection, treat the cause and give you practical advice for keeping your home clear.
An established corner of Midrand
Vorna Valley is one of Midrand's older residential suburbs, close to Halfway House and the main commercial strip. Many of its freestanding homes date from the 1980s and 1990s, on decent-sized stands with established gardens, big trees, pools and the odd rockery, with townhouse complexes mixed in. Some houses have been renovated two or three times, with additions joined onto the original roof.
That age matters. Gardens that have had thirty-odd years to grow give rats a canopy to travel along. Timber that has been in the ground or roof for decades, plus old stumps left when trees were felled, gives termites a long-term food supply. Newer suburbs further out don't have that history yet.
What we treat most in Vorna Valley
Roof rats
Night-time scratching above the bedrooms is the most common call. Roof rats climb trees, palm fronds and creepers, cross onto the roof and get in under the eaves or where an addition meets the old roof. We bait outdoors in secure stations, trap in the ceiling if needed, then show you which entry points to seal. More on rat treatments around Midrand.
Subterranean termites
In Vorna Valley the risk shows up as mud tubes on garage walls, damaged skirting in rooms beside flowerbeds, eaten door frames and, often, soft patches in old wooden decks or pergolas. A tree stump left in the garden after a felling is a frequent source. We apply registered soil treatments around the building or use baiting where trenching isn't practical. Our termite control in Midrand treatments carry a 5-year guarantee and a certificate.
Ants
Established gardens are full of ant colonies, and when the summer rain arrives they move into kitchens and bathrooms. We place baits along their routes and treat entry points around doors and plumbing.
Cockroaches from drains
Large American cockroaches come up through old drains and outside gullies on warm summer nights. Treating the drains and manholes as well as the house, and fitting gauze or a cover over open gullies, stops most of them.
Spiders and other garden visitors
Rain spiders, button spiders around pool pumps and garden sheds, and the occasional scorpion in rockeries. Rain spiders look frightening but are harmless; button spiders are the ones to take care with. A perimeter treatment and tidy storage keeps them out of the house. Pool pump housings and the space behind stacked garden chairs are the two spots worth checking with gloves on before you reach in.
What a visit involves
We check the roof space, the garage, the kitchen and bathrooms, the outside walls and the garden. Termite checks need access to built-in cupboards and the garage walls, so it helps if those aren't packed to the ceiling. Treatments for insects are odourless and leave no marks, and there's no need to go out; keep pets and young children off treated surfaces until dry. If several pests are present we treat them in one visit where possible, which saves you a second call-out. Townhouse owners in the suburb's complexes can book a unit on its own, though if the neighbours have the same problem it's worth asking the body corporate about a joint treatment.
Something people often miss
Owners who fell a big tree usually grind the stump down to soil level and plant over it. That leaves a large chunk of buried wood that subterranean termites can feed on for years, and once it's used up, the nearest timber is often the house. If you've had a tree removed, have the stump dug out properly, or ask us to inspect the area.
A Vorna Valley tip
Check where your renovations meet the original house. That join in the roof, and the expansion joint at ground level, are the two places rats and termites use most. Sealing the roof join and keeping soil and mulch below the damp-proof course at the expansion joint closes both routes.
What it costs and why
The price depends on the pest, the size of the house and how much needs treating. Ants or cockroaches in a normal family home is a modest job. Rats may need a follow-up to check the stations. Termite work is quoted on the perimeter of the building, whether we need to drill paving, and how much timber is affected. You'll find the guide "from" prices on our Johannesburg pest control costs page. If an ant bait from the shop will do the trick, we'll tell you.

Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost in Vorna Valley?
It depends on the pest and the size of the house. Ants and cockroaches are modest jobs; termites are quoted on the building's perimeter and paving. See our price page for guide prices.
Why do I hear scratching in my ceiling at night?
Usually roof rats, which climb trees and creepers onto the roof and get in under the eaves. They're most active after dark.
Can a tree stump really cause termites?
Yes. A buried stump is a big food source for subterranean termites, and once it's eaten they often move on to the nearest timber in the house.
Is a rain spider dangerous?
No. Rain spiders are large and alarming but harmless to people. Button spiders, which are small and shiny black, are the ones to avoid.
Do I need to leave the house during treatment?
No. Our insect and rodent treatments let you stay home. Just keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry.
How long will the treatment last?
General treatments carry a 3-month guarantee, and termite treatments a 5-year guarantee with a certificate. Good proofing helps the result last much longer.
