Pest control in Ebony Park mainly deals with rats, German cockroaches, bed bugs, flies and fleas in family homes, backyard rooms, spaza shops and crèches. We find where the pests are breeding, treat with lockable bait stations, gels and targeted sprays that are safe around children, and give practical advice to stop them coming back.
Ebony Park and its surroundings
Ebony Park is a residential township on the eastern side of Midrand, next to Ivory Park and close to Rabie Ridge. Homes are a mix of RDP houses, self-built and extended houses, and backyard rooms rented to tenants, with spaza shops, taverns, churches, schools and crèches spread through the streets. Open land, drainage lines and informal dumping sites sit close to some homes.
In practice, that means a single stand might be home to several households, each with its own cooking area, food store and refuse. For pests, it's a lot of food and shelter in a small space, and they move easily between rooms and neighbouring yards.
The main pests in Ebony Park
Rats
Brown rats burrow under slabs, rubble, scrap and dumped waste, and come inside at night through gaps under doors and around pipes. They chew food containers, bedding and electrical wiring, and can spread disease. With children and dogs in almost every yard, lockable, tamper-resistant stations are the only safe way to bait. Our rat control in Midrand explains how we place them.
German cockroaches
They live behind fridges, stoves and cupboards, and in the motors of appliances. In backyard rooms that share walls, they move from one kitchen to the next. Gel bait in the cracks where they hide works much better than spraying.
Bed bugs
Bed bugs come in with second-hand beds, couches and luggage, and spread quickly between rooms on the same stand. Look for bites in a line after sleeping, small blood spots on sheets and dark specks along mattress seams. Treatment covers the whole bed area, with a follow-up. See our bed bug control in Johannesburg for what's involved.
Flies
House flies breed in refuse and food waste, and summer heat makes numbers explode. They're a health risk around food, especially at spaza shops, food stalls and crèches.
Fleas
Dogs, cats and rats all carry fleas into yards and rooms, and bites around the ankles are the usual sign. The rooms, yard and pets all need treating together.
A yard-by-yard approach
Because pests move so easily between rooms on the same stand, the best results come when the landlord or homeowner books the whole stand: the main house and every backyard room. Neighbours who book on the same day also get better results, because the pests can't simply hop over the wall. We're happy to plan a visit that way.
What you can do yourself
- Keep refuse in a bin with a lid and put it out on collection day; don't let bags pile up against the house.
- Store maize meal, rice and bread in sealed tins or containers, off the floor.
- Clear scrap, rubble and old tyres away from walls; rats nest underneath.
- Close the gap under doors with a rubber strip.
- Check second-hand furniture and mattresses for bed bugs before bringing them inside.
Spaza shops, crèches and churches
Places that sell food or care for children need a safer, more regular approach. We offer scheduled visits with locked rodent stations, cockroach treatment in storerooms and kitchens, and a written record of each visit. Crèches often book treatments over weekends or holidays so everything is dry before children return.
The dangerous mistake
Using unlabelled poison bought from street sellers. Some of it is illegal and extremely toxic, and children have been seriously poisoned by it. Only use registered products with a proper label, and keep any bait locked away.
How a visit works
We inspect the house, rooms and yard, ask where you've seen pests and check how they're moving. Then we treat each pest with the right method. Insect treatments are odourless and won't stain. Nobody has to move out; children and pets should keep off treated surfaces until they've dried.
What it costs and why
The cost depends on the pest, the number of rooms and how established it is. Cockroaches in one kitchen is a small job; bed bugs or rats with follow-up visits take longer. A whole stand with several rooms costs more than one room, but it's far cheaper than treating rooms separately again and again. Spaza shops and crèches on a regular service are priced by size and visit frequency. The guide price on this page and our pest control price list for Johannesburg show where jobs start.
Ebony Park is covered by our Midrand pest control team, and Ivory Park next door has its own page.
Jason van Heerden owns and operates Combat Pest Control and has worked in pest control for 25 years. We're SAPCA registered and registered with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36, so we only use registered products. We can usually be there within 24 hours, and if the treated pest returns within 3 months of a general treatment, so do we. Phone 084 200 2700 or WhatsApp us a picture of what you're seeing.
Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost in Ebony Park?
It depends on the pest and how many rooms are involved. One kitchen with cockroaches is a small job; a whole stand costs more but works better. A guide price is on this page.
Can you treat all the backyard rooms at once?
Yes, and we recommend it. Pests move between rooms on the same stand, so treating them all together stops them coming back.
Is the rat bait safe with small children in the yard?
Yes. The bait sits inside locked, tamper-resistant stations that children and pets can't open.
How do I get rid of bed bugs for good?
A professional treatment of the bed, frame and nearby furniture, followed by a second visit, plus checking any second-hand furniture before it comes inside.
Do you treat crèches and spaza shops?
Yes. We offer regular treatments with a written record of each visit, timed so everything is dry before children or customers arrive.
Do we have to leave the house during treatment?
No. You can stay home. Just keep children and pets away from treated areas until they're dry.
