Pest control in Atholl homes and gardens

Big stands, big trees, pools and long lawns close to the Sandton CBD. Atholl's gardens are the reason most of its pests turn up, and the best place to stop them.

Pest control in Atholl is mostly a garden story. Roof rats travel through the mature trees, moles and harvester termites damage large lawns, wasps nest in eaves and pergolas, and water features and pools bring mosquitoes. Dogs bring fleas and ticks. We check from roof to back hedge, treat where pests breed and suggest garden changes that keep them away.

What Atholl properties are like

Atholl is one of the established residential suburbs on the southern side of Sandton, a short drive from the CBD. It's known for large stands with big family homes, swimming pools, tennis courts, staff quarters and well-kept gardens under tall old trees. Some of the original stands have been subdivided into smaller clusters, but the area still feels green and spacious, with high walls and long driveways.

All that space comes with plenty of shelter for pests: thick hedges, compost and leaf piles, irrigation that keeps soil moist, pool pump rooms and garden sheds. The house itself is often big, with complicated roof lines and several outbuildings.

The main pests on an Atholl property

Roof rats

The tree canopy is the rats' road. They run along branches and walls, onto the roof and under the eaves, then into the ceiling, often above the kitchen or a staff room. We set lockable bait stations at ground level, trap inside the roof, and then walk you through the entry points to close. Our rat control in Sandton page explains the method in more depth.

Moles and harvester termites

Big, well-watered lawns attract moles, which leave raised runs and mounds of soil. Harvester termites behave differently: in a dry winter they cut the grass and carry it underground, leaving bare patches with small holes. We tell you which it is before treating. See mole control around Sandton for how we handle lawn damage.

Wasps and bees

Paper wasps build under eaves, in pergolas, behind shutters and in hedges from spring. A nest by the pool or front door is a real problem for children and guests. We treat and remove nests safely. Bee swarms in wall cavities or roofs are removed with a beekeeper where possible.

Mosquitoes

Ponds, water features, bird baths, blocked gutters and covered pools that collect rainwater all breed mosquitoes in summer. Removing standing water and treating shady resting areas reduces them a lot.

Fleas and ticks

Large gardens with dogs often have fleas in the shady areas where pets sleep, and ticks in long grass and along hedges. Treating the garden and the house at the same time as the vet treats the dogs is what works.

How a visit works on a large property

We plan for a thorough inspection: the roof space, the house perimeter, staff quarters, garages, pool area, sheds and the garden itself. You'll get a plain explanation of what we found and what we recommend. Our sprays are odourless and non-staining, and you can carry on with your day; children and pets just keep off treated surfaces until they're dry. For estates and larger homes, we can set up scheduled visits so rodent stations are checked and wasp nests are found early.

Signs to look for

On a big property, problems often show up in the outbuildings first. Look for droppings in the pool pump room and garden shed, chewed irrigation pipes, and wasps flying in and out of the same gap in a pergola. In the lawn, fresh mounds after watering mean moles; bald patches with tiny holes in winter mean harvester termites. Dogs scratching more than usual are a good early warning for fleas.

Where people go wrong

Many homeowners set rat traps or poison only in the roof. By the time rats are in the ceiling, they've been living in the garden for a while. Unless the outside is baited and the trees cut back, new rats keep arriving.

An Atholl tip

Look at your compost heap and leaf pile. In a big garden these are often left near the boundary wall, where they become a warm, food-filled home for rats. Use a closed compost bin, keep it away from walls and the house, and don't add cooked food.

Through the year

Spring brings ants and wasps. Summer adds mosquitoes, flying termites and flies. Autumn is when rats begin moving into roofs, and winter is the main season for harvester termites in lawns. A spring visit for wasps and ants and an autumn visit for rats covers most Atholl properties well.

What it costs and why

Large properties cost more to treat than small ones, simply because there's more ground, more roof and more outbuildings. The price also depends on the pest: a wasp nest is a small job, while rats in a large roof need more stations and follow-ups, and a lawn termite treatment depends on the area. If you want regular visits for the whole property, we quote for the contract. Our guide prices for Johannesburg show the starting points, and we confirm after the inspection.

Questions we get asked

How much does pest control cost on a large Atholl property?

It depends on the size of the property and the pest. A wasp nest is a small job; rats in a big roof or a large lawn treatment cost more. Starting prices are on our guide page, and the inspection settles the final figure.

Is it safe to treat with children using the pool?

Yes. We keep treatments away from the pool water, and children can use treated areas once they're dry.

How do I tell moles from harvester termites?

Moles leave raised runs and mounds of fresh soil. Harvester termite damage looks different: flat, bald areas dotted with tiny openings, usually in the dry months.

Can you remove wasp nests from a pergola or high eave?

Yes. We treat the nest and remove it, and bring the equipment needed to reach high or awkward spots.

Do you treat staff quarters as well?

Yes. We usually treat the main house and the outbuildings together, because pests move between them.

Can I get a regular service for my property?

Yes. We can schedule visits through the year, with rodent stations checked and a record of each visit.
