Pest control in Strathavon homes

Strathavon is a small, quiet residential pocket close to the Sandton CBD. Its pests are the ordinary ones, but they still need treating properly.

Pest control in Strathavon is mostly household work: roof rats in the ceiling, ants in the kitchen, subterranean termites in older timber, fish moths in cupboards, and mosquitoes and spiders in summer. We find out what's drawing them in, treat that, and give you a short list of changes that stop the problem from coming back.

The honest picture in Strathavon

Strathavon is a small, largely residential suburb close to the Sandton CBD, made up mainly of family houses and cluster developments with established gardens. It doesn't have the restaurant strips or industrial sites that drive pest pressure in some neighbouring areas, so most problems here start inside the property line: a creeper that has reached the gutter, a garage full of boxes, a leaking pipe under the basin, a pile of building offcuts left behind the shed.

That's good news, because problems that start on your property can usually be fixed there too. It also means you'll get the most from a visit if we spend as much time showing you the cause as we do treating the result.

Five pests we're called out for in Strathavon

1. Roof rats

Scratching above the ceiling, usually from late autumn, is the most common call. Roof rats climb trees, walls and creepers and slip in under the eaves or through gaps where the roof meets the gutter. Bait stays outside in lockable stations; inside the roof we use traps. Then we show you the gap.

2. Ants

Small black ants in sugar bowls, pet bowls and along kitchen counters, especially in the humid weeks before a storm. We place baits along the trail so the workers carry them home and the colony dies off, which holds far longer than spraying the line you can see. Our ant control in Sandton page explains which ants turn up where.

3. Termites

Subterranean termites work up through cracks in floors and the backs of built-in cupboards. The signs are mud tubes, soil in cracks and timber that sounds hollow when tapped. A soil treatment around the affected part of the house, or a baiting system, deals with the colony. Our termite control in Johannesburg page explains both, and termite work carries a 5-year guarantee with a treatment certificate.

4. Fish moths

Silvery, fast-moving fish moths eat starch in paper, book bindings, wallpaper paste and stored clothes. They like dark, slightly damp cupboards, linen stores and garages. A targeted residual treatment, plus reducing damp, sorts them out.

5. Mosquitoes and spiders

Summer brings mosquitoes from any standing water in the garden, and spiders follow the insects drawn to outside lights. A barrier treatment around doors, windows and eaves keeps spiders down; tipping out water every few days does more for mosquitoes than any spray.

A short checklist for Strathavon homeowners

  • Cut tree branches back at least a metre from the roof.
  • Pull creepers off the walls near the eaves and gutters.
  • Store garage boxes on shelves, not on the floor.
  • Fix dripping taps and leaking pipes, especially under basins and next to outside walls.
  • Move building rubble, offcuts and old timber away from the house.
  • Tip out pot-plant saucers, buckets and bird baths weekly in summer.

What people commonly get wrong

Spraying an ant trail with household insecticide. It kills the ants in front of you, but the nest is somewhere under the paving or inside a wall, and it carries on. Worse, some sprays make ants split their nest, so you end up with two colonies. Bait, used patiently, is the better tool.

How a visit works

We look at the house, the roof space if there's a trap door, the garage and the garden, and ask you when and where you've noticed the problem. Treatment usually follows straight away. Products are odourless and won't stain, you don't need to leave home, and children and pets just keep off treated surfaces until they're dry.

What does it cost, and why?

For a typical Strathavon home, the cost depends on the pest and how far it has spread. Ants or cockroaches in one kitchen are a small job. Rats in a roof need stations, traps and usually a follow-up. Termites cost more because of the soil treatment or baiting involved, and the price depends on how much of the house is affected. There's a guide "from" price on this page, and our Johannesburg pest control price list shows where each service starts. Some problems really are small enough to sort out with shop-bought bait, and we'll tell you if yours is one of them.

Questions we get asked

How much does a basic home treatment cost in Strathavon?

A small job like ants or cockroaches in one kitchen sits at the lower end of our guide prices. Rats and termites cost more because they need more equipment and visits.

How do I know if it's rats or birds in my roof?

Birds are usually busiest at dawn and near the eaves, while rats are active after dark and move across the whole ceiling. Droppings the size of a raisin settle it.

Are fish moths harmful?

They don't bite or carry disease, but they damage books, papers, wallpaper and stored clothing. Reducing damp and treating the cupboards they use controls them.

Can I be home while you treat?

Yes. You don't need to leave for a normal insect treatment. Just keep children and pets off sprayed areas until they've dried.

How long does an ant treatment take to work?

Usually a few days to two weeks. You may see more ants for a day or two as they collect the bait, which is a good sign.

What should I do before you come?

Don't spray or clean away the ant trail, open the roof trap door if you have one, and point us to where you've seen activity.
