Pest control in Waterkloof Ridge is shaped by the hill. Scorpions and spiders live in the rock and retaining walls, roof rats move along the trees and terraces, termites work in the soil behind the walls, and wasps build under deep eaves. Combat Pest Control serves Waterkloof Ridge from Johannesburg and treats each home together with the slope around it.

Living on the ridge

Waterkloof Ridge sits on the high ground south of Waterkloof and Brooklyn, looking out over Pretoria. Homes here are large, often built on several levels into the rock, with terraced gardens, stone retaining walls, pools set into the slope and indigenous planting. Natural bushveld and rocky outcrops are never far away, and parts of the ridge back onto open, protected land.

A hillside home is not like a flat suburban stand. Every retaining wall is full of cracks and drainage gaps. Rockeries and dry-stone walls give shelter to animals that would struggle in a lawn. Lower levels and basements can be cooler and damper than the rooms above. And the bush next door means some of your pests are simply wildlife wandering in from their natural home, which changes how we treat them.

What we treat most on the ridge

Scorpions

Scorpions are the main reason people on the ridge call us. They shelter under rocks, in stone walls, behind pot plants and in stacked firewood, and come out on warm summer nights. Some find their way into shoes, towels on the floor and lower-level bedrooms. As a rough guide, scorpions with thick tails and small pincers are more venomous than those with big pincers and thin tails, and anyone stung by a thick-tailed one should get medical advice. Our scorpion control in Johannesburg page explains how we deal with them around the house.

Spiders

Rain spiders, baboon spiders in the rockeries and the occasional button spider under garden furniture are all part of ridge life. Most are harmless and useful. The ones worth controlling are those living around doors, outdoor seating, children's play areas and the pool pump box. See our spider control page for what we do and do not treat.

Roof rats

Trees and terraces give roof rats a series of steps up to the eaves. On split-level homes the lower roof is often only a jump from the garden above, so rats get in more easily than owners expect. We bait outside in lockable stations and trap in the roof space.

Termites in walls and terraces

Subterranean termites move through the soil behind retaining walls and can reach timber decks, pergolas, door frames on the lower floor and anything stored in a basement. Mud tubes on a stone or plastered wall are the warning sign.

Wasps

Deep eaves, covered patios and pool houses give paper wasps sheltered, sunny spots for nests. We treat and remove the nest, especially where it is close to a door or the pool.

Our approach on a hillside property

We walk the property level by level, from the top garden to the lowest room, because scorpions and rats both use the terraces as a route. Instead of spraying the whole hillside, we create a treated barrier around the house itself: the base of the walls, door thresholds, gaps under garage doors and the weep holes in retaining walls close to the building. That keeps treatment where it is needed and leaves the bushveld alone. Normal treatments mean nobody has to move out; keep children and pets away from treated surfaces until dry.

The thing many owners get wrong

Spraying the rockery. It kills a few insects scorpions feed on, upsets the garden and does nothing about the scorpion sitting deep in the wall. A barrier around the house, combined with taking away cover near doors, works far better.

A Waterkloof Ridge tip

Fit brush seals at the bottom of every outside door on the lower level and keep pot plants, firewood and loose stone at least a metre from those doors. Scorpions that cannot get under the door stay outside where they belong.

What it costs and why

A multi-level home on a slope takes longer to inspect and treat than a single-storey house, so size and layout are the main cost drivers. Scorpion and spider barrier treatments are priced on the perimeter we cover. Rodent work depends on the size of the roof and the number of stations. Termite treatments depend on the type of termite and how much soil or timber is involved. Our guide pricing shows where each service starts, and we quote after inspecting.

We also look after homes down the hill in Waterkloof and in Groenkloof, and our Johannesburg pest control page covers the full list of services.

Combat Pest Control is owned and operated by Jason van Heerden, with 25 years in the trade. We are registered with SAPCA and with the Department of Agriculture under Act 36, we offer service within 24 hours, and our general treatments are covered by a 3-month guarantee. Call 084 200 2700, or WhatsApp us a photo of the scorpion and we will identify it.

Questions we get asked

How much does scorpion treatment cost on Waterkloof Ridge?

It depends on the size of the house and how much perimeter we need to treat, which is more on a multi-level home. The guide prices on our price page give a starting point, and the final figure follows the inspection.

Can you get rid of all the scorpions on my property?

No one can clear scorpions from a natural hillside, and it would not be good for the bushveld. We keep them out of the house with a treated barrier and by removing cover near doors.

Which scorpions are dangerous?

As a rough guide, thick tails and small pincers mean a more venomous scorpion. If someone is stung by one, get medical advice. WhatsApp us a photo and we will identify it.

Is the treatment safe for my dogs and children?

Yes, once it is dry. Keep them off treated areas until then, and rodent bait stays inside lockable stations.

Why do I find termite tubes on my retaining wall?

Termites travel through the soil behind the wall and build mud tubes over the surface. It is worth an inspection, as they may be heading for timber nearby.

Do you treat baboon spiders?

Usually not. They live in burrows in the garden and rarely bother people. We focus on spiders around doors, seating and play areas.

What should I do before you come?

Move pot plants and stored items away from outside doors, open up the lower-level rooms and garage, and tell us where you have seen activity.
