Pest control in Wedela covers the problems that come with closely built mine-area housing on the Far West Rand: German cockroaches in kitchens, rats and mice, bed bugs, fleas, and harvester termites in dry yards and verges. Combat Pest Control serves Wedela from Johannesburg and plans every treatment around how pests move between neighbouring homes.
A mining town with its own pattern
Wedela is a small town near Carletonville in the Merafong area, built to house workers at the large gold mines of the Far West Rand. Much of its housing went up in planned rows: family homes and semi-detached units on regular stands, with shared walls and similar layouts, plus newer extensions and backyard rooms added by owners since. Around the town is open Highveld grassland and mining land.
The Far West Rand has hot summers, cold, frosty winters and a long dry season. That climate shapes the calendar. Cockroaches and flies peak in the heat. Rats and mice move indoors when the frost comes. Harvester termites strip yards and verges in the dry months. And because so many homes share a wall or a roof line, a pest problem in one unit is very often a problem in the one next door.
Pests by type of home
Semi-detached and row units
Shared walls and connected roof spaces let German cockroaches and rodents move freely. The cockroaches live in kitchen hinges, stove drawers and behind fridges, and travel along pipes that run through the shared wall. Mice and rats run along the roof space above several units. Treating one side only works for a short time. We strongly recommend both neighbours treat together, and for kitchens we use gel bait rather than spray. Our cockroach control in Johannesburg page explains why gel works so well.
Homes with backyard rooms
Rooms built at the back of the stand, often rented out, add more kitchens and more people. Bed bugs are the big risk here, especially where people travel home to other provinces and back, or where second-hand beds come in. We treat every sleeping area on the stand in one visit, because treating only the main house leaves a reservoir in the rooms.
Yards, sheds and open ground
Brown rats burrow at the foot of walls, under rubble and around chicken runs. Fleas breed in bare yards where dogs lie in the shade. In winter, harvester termites cut what grass there is and leave bare patches with small holes. We treat active harvester termite openings so the workers take the product down to the nest; our termite control across Johannesburg page describes the process.
What a treatment involves
We start by looking through the house, the roof space where there is access, any backyard rooms and the yard. We note where cockroaches are hiding, where rats are getting in and which beds have bed bug signs. Rodent bait goes into lockable stations that children and dogs cannot open. Insect treatments are odourless and do not stain. Nobody needs to move out, but keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they dry. Hostels, guesthouses and shops can be placed on a regular service with written records.
Something people often get wrong
Using insect bombs or foggers for cockroaches. The cloud does not reach inside cupboard hinges or appliance motors where German cockroaches hide, and it often drives them through the shared wall into the next unit, which then sends them back. Gel bait in the right spots and a joint treatment with the neighbour is what actually clears them.
A Wedela tip
Before winter, look at the line where your roof meets your neighbour's. Gaps along that join, and around the roof vents, are the main way mice and rats move between units. Blocking them with steel wool and mortar saves a lot of trouble when the frost arrives.
What it costs and why
The cost depends on the size of the home, how many rooms and units are involved, and the pest. A cockroach treatment for one kitchen is a fairly small job. Bed bugs across a house and backyard rooms take longer, and rodent control across a yard may need follow-up visits. Treating two neighbouring units together is often more effective for the money than treating one twice. See our guide to pest control prices for where each service starts, and we confirm the price before starting.
We also serve Carletonville and Fochville nearby, and everything we do is set out on our Johannesburg pest control page.

Questions we get asked
How much does pest control cost in Wedela?
It depends on the size of the home, how many rooms or units we treat and which pest it is. Our price page shows guide prices and we confirm the cost before we start.
Should my neighbour and I treat at the same time?
Yes, if you share a wall or roof. Cockroaches and mice move between units, so a joint treatment lasts much longer.
How do bed bugs get into a house?
Mostly in luggage, second-hand beds and couches, and from visitors. They hide in mattress seams and bed bases and spread from room to room.
Do I need to leave the house for the treatment?
No. You can stay home. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they are dry.
Why is my yard full of bare patches in winter?
Usually harvester termites, which cut dry grass and carry it underground. Look for small holes with loose soil around them.
Do you service hostels and guesthouses?
Yes. We do once-off treatments and regular scheduled visits with a written service record.
How long does a cockroach gel treatment take to work?
You should see fewer cockroaches within a week or two as they feed on the bait. A follow-up visit clears any that hatch later.
