Pest control in Groenkloof

Large older properties, a nature reserve and a rocky ridge make Groenkloof a green, quiet suburb, and a busy one for rodents, scorpions, bees and termites.

Pest control in Groenkloof means looking after large older properties next to a nature reserve and a rocky ridge: rodents in big gardens and roofs, scorpions and spiders near the rocks, bee swarms in old trees and walls, bird mites under the eaves, and termites and wood borer in old timber. Combat serves Groenkloof from Johannesburg, discreetly and by appointment.

What sets Groenkloof apart

Groenkloof sits just south of central Pretoria, on the slopes below the ridge where Fort Klapperkop stands. Next to it is the Groenkloof Nature Reserve, one of the oldest proclaimed reserves in Africa, with grassland, rocky koppies and game. The suburb itself has big stands, mature trees and many older, substantial homes, a number of them used as embassies, diplomatic residences or offices. The University of Pretoria also has a campus here.

Large gardens, old trees and open veld right at the boundary mean wildlife, and pests, move freely. And many of these properties are run by managing agents or embassy staff who need treatments planned carefully, recorded and done without fuss.

The pests we deal with in Groenkloof

Rodents

Roof rats live in the tree canopy and travel along branches, creepers and walls into roof spaces. On big properties, outbuildings, staff quarters, pool rooms and compost areas give them extra places to nest. We use lockable bait stations around the outside, traps in the roof and a proofing check of the eaves, vents and pipe entries.

Scorpions and spiders

Properties against the ridge or the reserve see scorpions in garages, outside rooms and under doors on warm nights, as well as baboon spiders and other large spiders in the garden. We treat around the perimeter, the garage and rockeries, and point out the gaps to seal.

Bees and wasps

Old trees with hollow trunks and older homes with gaps in the eaves or chimneys attract bee swarms, especially in spring. Where possible we refer swarms to a beekeeper or work with one to remove them. The bee removal and control page explains what to do if a swarm moves in. Wasp nests under eaves, pergolas and outdoor furniture are treated directly.

Bird mites

When pigeons, mynas or sparrows nest in roofs and gutters and the chicks leave, the mites they leave behind go looking for a new host and bite people in the rooms below. People often mistake them for bed bugs. We treat and remove the nest and the mites, and then seal the gap. Our bird mite treatment page describes the signs.

Termites and wood borer

Older homes with timber floors, roof trusses and built-in cupboards are at risk of subterranean termites and wood borer. Harvester termites can also strip the lawns of large gardens in a dry Pretoria winter. Any termite work we do on these homes is backed by a treatment certificate and our 5-year termite guarantee.

Working on embassies and managed properties

Many Groenkloof properties have security protocols, staff in residence and someone else signing off the work. We're used to that. We book visits in advance, confirm who will arrive, keep to agreed areas, and provide a written report of what was found and treated. For ongoing care, a scheduled monitoring contract keeps rodent stations checked and logged on a regular cycle. We also do entomological inspections and pest reports where a property is being sold, leased or audited.

Our approach

We start with a full inspection: the main house, outbuildings, the roof space where accessible, the garden, the boundary with the reserve or the ridge, and any trees close to the house. Then we put a plan together and explain it before we start. Treatments are odourless and non-staining, and residents don't need to leave. Pets and children should stay off treated surfaces until they're dry.

The common mistake

Killing a bee swarm in a wall and leaving the comb inside. The honey melts, seeps through the wall, attracts other insects and sometimes another swarm, and leaves a stain. A swarm in a structure needs the comb removed and the entry sealed.

A Groenkloof tip

Have someone check the eaves and gutters for bird nests every spring. On older houses with big gutters and gaps under the roof sheets, birds settle quickly, and clearing a nest early is much easier than dealing with bird mites later.

What it costs and why

Costs in Groenkloof depend on the size of the property, the number of buildings and how many pests we're treating. A large stand with outbuildings takes longer than an ordinary suburban house. Bees depend on where the swarm is. Termite and wood borer work is quoted after an inspection. Monitoring contracts are priced on the site and the frequency of visits. Guide "from" prices are on our pricing page.

We also cover neighbouring Waterkloof and the rest of Pretoria, and our pest control across Johannesburg page lists every service.

Questions we get asked

What does pest control cost for a large Groenkloof property?

The size of the stand, how many buildings there are and which pests we're treating all play a part. Our price page lists where each treatment starts, and we give a full quote after the inspection.

Can you work at an embassy or diplomatic residence?

Yes. We book in advance, follow security procedures, and provide a written report of the work done.

Something is biting us at night but it's not bed bugs. What could it be?

Bird mites are a common cause in older homes with nests in the roof or gutters. We can confirm and treat both the mites and the nest.

Do you kill bees?

We prefer not to. Where possible we refer swarms to a beekeeper or work with one, and remove the comb if they've moved into a structure.

Are scorpions common near the reserve?

Yes, on properties close to the rocky ridge and the reserve. A perimeter treatment and sealing gaps under doors helps keep them out.

Can you provide a pest report for a property sale?

Yes. We do entomological inspections and pest reports for sales, leases and audits.
