Pest control for Waterkloof homes

Big gardens, old trees and large, well-kept homes make Waterkloof one of Pretoria's finest suburbs. They also give roof rats, termites and wood borer plenty to work with.

Pest control in Waterkloof is mostly about protecting large, established homes: roof rats coming in from mature trees, termites and wood borer in older timber, bird mites from nests under the eaves, wasps in big gardens and ants before the rains. Combat Pest Control serves Waterkloof from Johannesburg and works quietly around households, staff and security.

Waterkloof's character, and why it matters for pests

Waterkloof is one of Pretoria's oldest and wealthiest suburbs, south-east of the city centre, between Brooklyn and the hills of Waterkloof Ridge. It is known for large stands, long driveways, jacaranda-lined streets, and a number of embassies and diplomatic residences. Many homes date from the mid twentieth century and have been extended more than once, with thatch lapas, cottages, staff quarters and pool houses added over the years.

The older the property and the bigger the garden, the more places pests can live. Mature trees touch the roofs. Original timber floors, roof trusses and built-in cupboards are decades old. Outbuildings are often used for storage and seldom checked. And the warm Pretoria climate gives insects a long active season.

Main pests in Waterkloof

Roof rats

Scratching above the ceiling at night is the most common call from these big homes. Roof rats climb the trees, creepers and boundary walls and get in where roof sheeting, tiles or thatch meet the walls. They also nest in garden sheds and pool pump rooms. Our rat control in Johannesburg method, with lockable bait outside and traps inside the roof, is the same one we use here.

Termites

Subterranean termites go for skirting boards, door frames and the backs of cupboards on older homes, and for wooden decking, pergolas and stored timber in the garden. Harvester termites thin out large lawns in winter. Different termite, different treatment, so we confirm the species before we treat.

Wood borer

Small round exit holes and fine powder below old floorboards, antique furniture or roof timbers point to wood borer. It works slowly, which is why it is often missed for years. We treat affected timber directly, and our wood borer treatment page explains how to tell it apart from termites.

Bird mites

Pigeons, mynas and sparrows nest in gutters, under eaves and in roof spaces. When the chicks leave, the tiny mites in the nest go looking for a new host and come through ceiling gaps and light fittings into bedrooms. We remove and treat the nest and the surrounding area, then advise on bird proofing so it does not happen again.

Wasps and ants

Paper wasps build their small, open, grey nests under eaves, in thatch lapas and inside pool houses, and they sting when a gardener or a child gets too close. We treat and remove the nest itself rather than spraying the whole area. Ants arrive along paving and up into kitchens in summer, and baiting the colony is a quick, targeted job.

Working in large and diplomatic homes

We are used to properties with security, staff and strict access times. We agree a time with the household or the person responsible for the residence, explain what we will do and where, and keep products away from kitchens and food preparation areas. Insect treatments are odourless and non-staining, so nobody needs to move out; children and pets stay off treated surfaces until dry. Large homes and residences can be placed on scheduled visits with a written service record.

The mistake older homes make

Treating the main house and forgetting the outbuildings. Rats breed in the garden shed, the cottage roof or the lapa, then move back into the house a month after it was treated. Termites in an old wood pile behind the staff quarters can go unnoticed until they reach the main building. The whole property needs to be part of the plan.

A Waterkloof tip

Ask your gardener to cut back any branch within a metre of the roof every year, and keep creepers off the walls below the eaves. In a suburb with trees this large and old, it is the single job that keeps roof rats out longest.

What it costs and why

The size of the property drives most of the price. A rat treatment in a large house with a big roof space and several outbuildings takes longer than a townhouse. Termite and wood borer work depends on how much timber is affected and how long the building perimeter is. Bird mite jobs depend on how many nests there are and how easy they are to reach. Our guide prices show where each service starts, and we give a clear quote after the inspection.

We also treat homes on Waterkloof Ridge and in Brooklyn, and the full range of what we do is on our main pest control page.

Questions we get asked

How much does pest control cost for a large Waterkloof home?

It depends mostly on the size of the house, the roof space and the number of outbuildings, plus which pest we are treating. Our price page shows guide prices and we quote after the inspection.

Can you work around our security and staff?

Yes. We book a time with the household or residence manager, follow access rules and explain the treatment to whoever is on site.

How can I tell termite damage from wood borer?

Look at what is left behind. Termites build mud tubes and hollow the timber out from inside, while wood borer leaves neat round holes with fine powder underneath. We check before treating because each needs its own method.

What are the tiny bites in our bedroom with no bed bugs?

Often bird mites from a nest in the roof or gutter. We find and remove the nest, treat the area and advise on bird proofing.

Do you offer regular visits for residences?

Yes. We can set up scheduled visits with a written service record for each one.

Will the treatment mark our floors or furniture?

No. Our residual sprays are odourless and non-staining, and we keep them away from antiques and fabrics where they are not needed.

How quickly can you come out?

We offer service within 24 hours. Call 084 200 2700 to book.
