Pest control in Welbekend starts with knowing what you are dealing with. Most calls we get are about mice and rats, cockroaches, termites, ants, and bees or wasps setting up home in a wall or roof. Combat Pest Control serves Welbekend from Johannesburg, and a quick photo on WhatsApp often tells us exactly what is needed before we arrive.

Why identification comes first

Welbekend is a small community in Gauteng, and properties here range from family homes to larger stands with gardens, sheds and outbuildings. Whatever kind of property you have, the treatment depends entirely on the pest. A bait that clears ants does nothing for termites. A spray that knocks down cockroaches can make a bee swarm aggressive. Getting the identification right saves you money and saves us a wasted trip.

The Highveld climate sets the timing. Hot, wet summers from about October to March bring insects out in numbers, while dry, cold winters send rodents indoors. Knowing the season helps narrow down what you have seen.

A quick guide to what you might be seeing

Droppings in the cupboard

Droppings the size of a grain of rice, scattered in drawers and along shelves, are mice. Droppings closer to the size of a raisin, usually in groups along a wall or in the roof, are rats. Mice tend to nest inside the house, in the back of a cupboard or under the stove; rats more often live outside or in the ceiling and come in to feed. Our mouse control in Johannesburg page explains how the two are handled differently.

Brown insects running when the light goes on

Small, light brown cockroaches with two dark stripes behind the head are German cockroaches, an indoor kitchen pest that needs gel baiting. Big, reddish cockroaches that fly on hot nights are American cockroaches, which come in from drains and manholes. Black pepper-like droppings in hinges and corners confirm cockroaches.

Mud lines on a wall

Thin, brown, earthy tunnels running up a wall, a cupboard back or a door frame are subterranean termites. Do not break them open. They show us where the colony is coming in. Bare patches in a dry lawn with small holes and loose soil heaps are harvester termites, a different species with a different treatment. Read the guide to termites to understand how colonies work.

Trails of tiny insects

Lines of ants along the skirting, the kitchen counter or into a pet bowl usually come from a nest outside the house or under paving. They are worst just before summer rain. Ant baits that the workers carry back to the nest work far better than spraying the trail.

Buzzing in the wall

Bees flying in and out of a gap in a wall, a roof or a meter box mean a colony has moved in. Wasps build small, open paper nests under eaves. Bees are valuable, so where possible we work with a beekeeper to remove a swarm rather than kill it. Our bee removal and control page has more on how that works.

How to take a useful photo

  • Get close, in good light, with something for scale such as a coin or a matchbox
  • Photograph the droppings, damage or mud tubes as well as the insect itself
  • Include one wider photo showing where in the house or garden you found it
  • Do not spray first; a squashed or soaked insect is much harder to identify

What happens on the visit

We confirm the pest, then look for the reason it is there: a gap under the garage door, a leaking pipe, pet food left out, a woodpile against the wall. Treatment follows from that. Rodents get lockable bait stations and traps. Cockroaches get gel. Ants get bait. Termites get registered soil treatment or baiting. Normal insect treatments do not require anyone to move out, but keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they are dry.

The common mistake

Treating with whatever is in the garage cupboard before knowing what the pest is. Spraying termite tubes kills a handful of workers and hides the trail. Spraying a bee colony in a wall leaves a mass of dead bees and honey that attracts more pests and smells. A photo first costs nothing.

What it costs and why

The price depends on the pest, the size of the property and how far the problem has spread. Ants or cockroaches in a kitchen is a small job. Rats across a house and outbuildings, or termites around a building, take more work. Bee removal depends on where the colony is and how hard it is to reach. Our pest control guide prices show where each service starts, and we confirm the price before we begin. If it turns out to be something you can sort out yourself, we will say so.

Everything we treat across the province is listed on our Johannesburg and Gauteng pest control page.

Questions we get asked

How much does pest control in Welbekend cost?

Two things set it: which pest you have and how big the property is. A small ant or cockroach job costs much less than termites or rats across several buildings. Our price page shows guide prices and we confirm the price before starting.

Can you tell what pest I have from a photo?

Usually, yes. A clear, close photo with something for scale lets us identify most insects, droppings and damage before we visit.

Are mouse and rat droppings different?

Yes. Mouse droppings are about the size of a grain of rice; rat droppings are closer to a raisin and usually found in groups.

Will you kill the bees in my wall?

Not if we can avoid it. Where possible we work with a beekeeper to remove the colony alive.

Do I need to leave home during treatment?

No, not for normal insect treatments, as long as children and pets stay away from sprayed areas while they dry. Only gas fumigation requires the area to be vacated.

How long does a treatment last?

Most general treatments carry a 3-month guarantee, and termite treatments carry a 5-year guarantee with a certificate.

Should I spray before you arrive?

No. Spraying scatters cockroaches, hides termite trails and can make bees aggressive. Leave things as they are so we can see the activity.
