Pest control in Wapadrand, Pretoria East

Bare patches in the lawn, ants along the skirting boards, a rat in the garage. Pretoria East estates like Wapadrand have their own pest pattern, and we know it well.

Pest control in Wapadrand usually means harvester termites in lawns, ants coming in before the summer storms, rats and mice in garages and roofs, and spiders and moles in the garden. Combat Pest Control serves Wapadrand from Johannesburg, and we start every job by finding what is drawing the pests in.

Wapadrand and its pest pressure

Wapadrand lies in Pretoria East, near Faerie Glen and Silver Lakes, close to the N4. Much of it is family homes on decent stands, cluster developments and security villages, built from the 1980s onwards on what used to be open Highveld grassland. Many gardens are big lawns with irrigation, indigenous trees and a pool. Behind the walls there is still veld and ridge country towards the east.

Pretoria is warmer than Johannesburg, with hot summers and dry, sunny winters. That suits termites, ants and spiders, and the open ground near the estates feeds a steady supply of field mice and rats into gardens and garages. In clusters, where units share walls and a common garden, one problem easily becomes everyone's.

The pests we see most in Wapadrand

Harvester termites in lawns

This is the classic Pretoria East call. In a dry winter, harvester termites cut kikuyu and buffalo grass and carry it underground, leaving bare, sandy patches with small holes and loose soil heaps. Watering alone will not bring the lawn back while the colony is still active. We treat the active openings so the workers carry the product down to the nest, then the lawn can recover.

Subterranean termites

Mud tubes up a garage wall, behind a built-in cupboard or around a door frame are a different termite and a structural risk. Estate homes are not immune, especially where flowerbeds are built up against the walls or building rubble was buried in the garden. Our termite treatment in Johannesburg page covers both kinds in detail.

Ants

Pugnacious ants and small black house ants come in along paving joints and skirting boards, usually just before a thunderstorm. We use baits that the workers take back to the nest, because spraying a trail kills the ants you see and leaves the queen untouched. See our ant control for how baiting works.

Rats and mice

Field mice and rats move in from the veld in autumn. Garages, roof spaces above the kitchen and storerooms are the usual targets. Lockable bait stations outside and traps in the roof deal with them, and sealing gaps under garage doors keeps them out.

Spiders and moles

Rain spiders and button spiders are common in Pretoria East gardens and garages. The big, flat rain spider looks frightening but is mostly harmless; the small, glossy black button spider with a red mark is the one to keep away from children, and it hides under garden furniture, in the pool pump box and in stacked pots. Mole rats push up mounds across irrigated lawns and are a separate job from termites, even though people often confuse the two. A mound of fresh soil with no open hole is usually a mole rat, while a flat patch peppered with small holes is termites.

How we work in estates and clusters

Many Wapadrand properties are in managed estates, so we arrive with the right paperwork, work within access rules and can treat a whole complex for the body corporate. That matters most for rats and cockroaches, which move between units through shared roofs and drains. Treatments are odourless and do not stain, and you can stay in your home. Keep pets and children off treated areas until they are dry. For estates with a lot of common ground, a scheduled monitoring contract with bait stations around the guardhouse, refuse area and clubhouse is often cheaper over a year than calling us out unit by unit.

A common mistake

Owners often re-seed or roll out new lawn over harvester termite patches, then watch the new grass vanish. The colony simply eats the fresh grass. Treat first, then repair the lawn, and keep watering through winter if water restrictions allow, because stressed, dry grass is what draws them in.

A Wapadrand tip

Check the strip of lawn along your boundary wall that the irrigation misses. Harvester termite activity often starts in that dry band and spreads inwards, and it is the easiest place to catch it early.

What it costs and why

Cost depends on the pest, the size of the stand and, for termites, the area of lawn or the length of the building's perimeter. Ant baiting or a cockroach treatment in a house is a fairly small job. Harvester termites across a large lawn, or subterranean termites around a home, cost more. A whole-complex treatment is quoted for the site. Our price list shows the guide "from" prices, and we will tell you if a problem is small enough to handle yourself.

Next door, we also cover Silver Lakes and Faerie Glen, and everything we treat is on our Johannesburg pest control page.

Questions we get asked

What does pest control cost in Wapadrand?

The pest and the stand size decide most of it. Ants or cockroaches in a house is a modest job, while termites in a large lawn or around a building costs more. Our price page shows guide prices and we quote after inspecting.

Are the bare patches in my lawn termites or moles?

Bare patches with small holes and loose soil are usually harvester termites. Raised mounds of soil pushed up across the lawn are mole rats.

How long does a termite treatment last?

Our termite treatments carry a 5-year guarantee with a certificate. Lawn activity can return from neighbouring stands, so let us know if new holes appear.

Can you treat our whole cluster complex?

Yes. We work with the body corporate or managing agent and can treat all the units and common areas together.

Is the treatment safe for my dogs?

Yes, when it is used correctly. Keep dogs off treated lawns and surfaces until dry, and rodent bait stays in lockable stations.

When is the worst time for ants?

Late spring and summer, especially in the days before a thunderstorm, when colonies move and forage hard.

Do I need to be home for the visit?

It helps for the first inspection so we can talk through what you have seen. For follow-ups in an estate, access through security is usually enough.
