Pest control in Rietfontein, in Pretoria's Moot, mostly involves older houses: termites in timber and lawns, roof rats under tin roofs, cockroaches in kitchens, and fish moths and ants. Combat Pest Control covers Rietfontein from Johannesburg, starting every job with an inspection so we treat the cause, and we also do pest inspections and reports for people buying homes here.
Rietfontein in the Moot
Rietfontein lies in the Moot, the long valley that runs east of Pretoria's city centre between the Magaliesberg ridge to the north and the Daspoort ridge to the south. It sits alongside suburbs like Gezina and Villieria and shares their character: mostly freestanding houses built in the middle of the last century, many with corrugated iron roofs, front stoeps, wooden floors, outbuildings at the back and big old trees. Some houses on the busier roads have become offices, shops and guesthouses.
The valley is warm in summer and the ridges are rocky and bushy. Houses of that age have timber where termites and borer like it, and roof spaces where the sheeting has moved over the years. That gives pests a lot of easy openings.
Pests by season in a Rietfontein home
Spring
Paper wasps start nests under the eaves and stoep roof. Ants become active and begin trailing indoors. It's a good time to check the roof for gaps before summer.
Summer
The first good rain brings termite swarms. Winged termites coming out of a floor, a skirting board or a door frame inside the house mean a colony is using the building. German cockroaches multiply quickly in warm kitchens, and American cockroaches walk in from drains on hot nights. Mosquitoes breed in anything holding water.
Autumn and winter
Roof rats and mice move into ceilings and garages as the nights get cold, and you start hearing them after dark. Harvester termites strip patches of dry lawn. Fish moths are active all year in linen cupboards, bookshelves and stored papers.
How we treat the main pests
- Subterranean termites: a registered soil treatment around the building and treatment of active points inside, with a 5-year guarantee and a treatment certificate.
- Harvester termites: a targeted lawn treatment, timed for when they're active.
- Roof rats and mice: lockable bait stations outside, traps in the roof, and a list of gaps to seal.
- German cockroaches: gel baits in hinges, motor housings and cracks, rather than spray.
- Ants: baits carried back to the nest.
- Fish moths: treatment of cupboards, skirtings and the roof space where they breed.
Buying a house in Rietfontein?
With older homes, an inspection before you buy can save a lot of money. We check the timber, the roof space where accessible, built-in cupboards, the outside walls and the garden for termites, wood borer and other pests, and give you a written report. That tells you what you're taking on and gives you something to discuss with the seller. Our entomological inspections and pest reports page explains what the report covers.
Small businesses in converted houses
Offices, guesthouses and small shops in converted homes have the same old roofs and timber as the houses around them, plus kitchens, staff rooms and stock. We offer scheduled visits with a service record, which suits guesthouses and anyone handling food.
A mistake we see in older homes
Treating the swarm, not the colony. When winged termites pour out of a skirting board, people spray them, sweep them up and think it's over. The swarm is just the colony sending out new queens and kings; the colony itself is still in the soil under the house, still eating. A swarm indoors is a sign to book an inspection, not to celebrate.
A Moot tip
Look under the stoep and along the base of the outside walls. Many older Rietfontein houses have planters, soil or paving built up against the walls over the years, sometimes above the damp-proof course. That creates a hidden bridge for termites from the soil into the walls. Keep soil and mulch below the damp course and away from timber.
What it costs and why
Costs vary with the pest and the house. Cockroaches, ants or fish moths are straightforward jobs. Rats need stations, roof work and a follow-up. Termite soil work is the biggest job, depending on the house perimeter and how much paving needs drilling. A pre-purchase inspection and report is a fixed piece of work quoted up front. You'll see a guide "from" price on this page, and our pest control rates page explains the factors behind a quote.
We also cover Gezina and pest control in Villieria along the same valley, and the full range of what we do is on our Johannesburg and Gauteng pest control page.

Questions we get asked
Can you inspect a house in Rietfontein before I buy it?
Yes. We inspect for termites, wood borer and other pests and give you a written report, which is useful for older homes in the Moot.
What does a pest inspection for a property sale cost?
It's quoted up front based on the size of the property and what the report needs to cover. Our price guide shows a starting price for our main services.
I saw flying ants inside after rain. Should I worry?
If they came out of a floor, wall or door frame inside the house, yes, that usually means a termite colony is using the building. Book an inspection. A swarm in the garden is normal.
Will a termite treatment damage my old wooden floors?
No. The main treatment goes into the soil around and under the building. Any active points inside are treated carefully without damaging the timber.
How long does a cockroach treatment take?
The visit itself is usually under an hour for a house. Gel baits keep working for weeks, and most homes see a big drop within one to two weeks.
Do I need to clear the roof before you come?
No, just make sure we can reach the roof hatch. We'll check what we can safely access.
