Pest control in Rietvalleirand deals with the ridge as much as the house: scorpions and spiders sheltering in rockeries and retaining walls, harvester termites in dry lawns, roof rats climbing into ceilings, and paper wasps under the eaves in summer. Combat Pest Control covers Rietvalleirand from Johannesburg, inspecting the garden and slopes as carefully as the home.

Life on the rand

Rietvalleirand is a residential suburb in Pretoria's south-east, near Rietvalleipark and Erasmuskloof. The "rand" in the name means ridge, and parts of the suburb sit on rising, rocky ground. Homes are mostly freestanding family houses with walled gardens, many with terraced stands, retaining walls, rock gardens and paved entertainment areas, plus some complexes. Summers are hot and stormy; winters are dry and cool.

Rocky slopes and retaining walls hold warmth and create endless crevices. That's ideal for scorpions, spiders, crickets and the occasional rodent. Dry, sloping lawns suit harvester termites. And mature trees and creepers give roof rats a ladder onto the roof.

Scorpions and spiders

Scorpions spend the day under rocks, paving, pot plants, firewood and in the gaps in stacked-stone or block retaining walls, and come out at night to hunt the insects drawn to garden lights. They wander into the house under doors, through garages and via sliding-door tracks. Sac spiders and button spiders use the same sheltered spots and often end up in garages and outbuildings.

We treat the outside of the home with a residual barrier along foundations, doors and garage edges, then treat the rockeries, walls and other shelters, and the spots inside where they get in. You'll get a short list of gaps to close. Our scorpion control page explains which scorpions are more venomous and why it matters with children.

Harvester termites on dry slopes

Sloping lawns dry out fast, and harvester termites take advantage, especially from late autumn through to the first spring rains. You'll see bare patches, small round open holes, loose soil and cut grass pieces. We treat them in the lawn when they're active. If you see mud tubes on the house or retaining walls, that's subterranean termites, treated with a soil barrier around the building and covered by a 5-year guarantee and certificate. More on both is on our termite treatments in Gauteng page.

Roof rats and wasps

Roof rats climb trees, creepers and walls and squeeze in under the eaves or roof tiles. You hear them at night. We bait in lockable stations outside, trap in the roof and show you where they're getting in. Paper wasps build under eaves, pergolas and the edges of patio roofs from spring; we remove nests safely, and bee swarms are referred to or handled with a beekeeper where possible.

How we work

On a sloping property, we look closely at the outside first: the retaining walls, the rockery, the garden lights, the base of the walls and every outside door. Inside, we check the garage, laundry, bathrooms and the roof where accessible. Treatments are odourless and won't mark paving or walls, and you don't need to leave the house. Keep children and pets off treated areas until they're dry.

The common mistake

Building a beautiful rockery or stacked-stone feature right up against the house. It looks great and it gives scorpions and spiders a perfect home a few centimetres from your back door. If you're landscaping, keep a clear strip of paving or gravel between the rocks and the walls.

A ridge tip

Switch outside lights near doors to warm-coloured bulbs, or put them on a motion sensor. Bright white lights draw insects at night, and the insects draw scorpions and spiders to your doorway. A rubber seal or brush strip under every outside door, including the garage, does the rest.

Signs it's time to call

  • Scorpions in the house more than once in a season
  • Several scorpions under the same rocks or pots
  • Bare lawn patches spreading each week
  • Scratching in the ceiling after dark
  • Wasps flying steadily in and out of one spot under the eaves

What it costs and why

The price reflects the size of the house and garden, and how much rockery and retaining wall needs treating. A scorpion and spider treatment is a moderate job; combining it with rats or a wasp nest in the same visit costs less than separate bookings. Harvester termite treatments depend on the lawn area, and structural termite work depends on the building's perimeter. A guide "from" price appears on this page, and our pest control costs page explains what drives a quote. If sealing doors and moving rocks would sort it out, we'll tell you.

Questions we get asked

Which scorpions in Pretoria are dangerous?

As a general guide, scorpions with thick tails and small pincers have stronger venom than those with big pincers and thin tails. Any sting on a child should be checked by a doctor. Send us a photo and we'll identify it.

How much does scorpion control cost in Rietvalleirand?

It depends on the size of the house and how much garden, rockery and wall needs treating. Our price guide shows a starting price and we confirm once we've seen the property.

Will the treatment harm my garden?

No. We treat the rocks, wall crevices and soil surface where scorpions shelter, not your plants.

How often should I treat for scorpions?

Most homes on rocky stands do well with a treatment in spring and another in mid-summer. Sealing doors and moving rubble reduces how often you need it.

What are the bare patches in my sloping lawn?

Most likely harvester termites, which are common on dry Pretoria lawns. They need a specific lawn treatment rather than a general insect spray.

Do I need to be home during treatment?

We need access to the house and garage, but you don't need to leave while we work. Keep pets and children off treated areas until they're dry.
