Pest control in Rayton means dealing with country pests close to the house: termites in lawns and timber, scorpions and spiders from the veld, rats and mice in stores and roofs, ticks in long grass and wasps under the eaves. Combat Pest Control travels to Rayton from Johannesburg and plans each visit around the whole property, not just the rooms where pests have been seen.

Rayton's setting

Rayton is a small town on the eastern side of Tshwane, near Cullinan, with a quiet village feel. Homes are mostly freestanding houses on decent stands, many with big gardens, outbuildings and fruit trees, and the town is ringed by farms, smallholdings and open Highveld grassland. Summers bring thunderstorms; winters are dry, with cold mornings.

Out here the veld is close to every back fence, so a lot of what we treat walks in from outside. That's very different from a dense suburb, where pests mostly come from the neighbours.

Termites: Rayton's biggest call

Termites are the pest we get asked about most in country towns east of Pretoria. Two types matter:

  • Harvester termites take grass from lawns and veld, mostly in the dry months, leaving bare patches with small holes and heaps of loose soil. They don't damage buildings, but they can clear a lawn.
  • Subterranean termites eat timber: door frames, skirting boards, cupboards, roof trusses, and old wood in sheds and outbuildings. They travel in mud tubes from the soil and can work unseen for a long time.

We find out which one you have, then treat accordingly: a targeted treatment for harvester termites in the lawn, or a registered soil treatment around the building for subterranean termites, backed by a 5-year guarantee with a treatment certificate. If you're building on a plot, we also pre-treat the soil before the slab goes down. You'll find more on our termite control page.

Scorpions and spiders

Rocky ground, stone walls, woodpiles and garden rubble give scorpions and spiders shelter right next to the house. They come in at night under doors and through garages. We apply a residual barrier around the foundations, doorways and outbuildings and treat the places they hide. Clearing rubble and fitting door sweeps keeps them out longer. Our scorpion treatments page covers which species to be careful of.

Rats, mice and ticks

Rodents move in from surrounding farmland when crops are harvested and when the cold comes. They get into garages, storerooms, feed rooms and ceilings. We use lockable bait stations outdoors and traps inside, then point out the gaps. Ticks build up in long grass, kennels and around outbuildings where dogs sleep; we treat those areas, and you treat the dogs.

Wasps and bees

Paper wasps nest under eaves, in carports and on outbuilding rafters from spring. We remove nests safely. Bee swarms in walls or roofs are referred to or handled with a beekeeper wherever possible.

Our visits to Rayton

Because Rayton properties tend to be large, we allow time on the first visit to walk everything: the house, the roof space where we can get in, outbuildings, woodpiles, the boundary and any animal areas. Treatments are odourless and don't stain, and you don't need to move out. Children and pets should wait until treated areas are completely dry before going near them again. Where a second visit makes sense, we set the date there and then.

Signs to look out for

  • Mud tubes on foundations, the inside of a garage or the back of a cupboard
  • Winged termites coming out of the ground or a door frame after the first good summer rain
  • Scorpions in shoes, the bath or the garage more than once a season
  • Gnawed feed bags, droppings on shelves in the storeroom, scratching in the roof
  • Ticks on the dogs within days of a treatment, which points to a source in the yard

What people get wrong

Leaving old timber lying around. Fallen fence poles, building offcuts, an old shed floor or a pile of firewood on the ground feeds termites for years, and once the colony is big enough it looks for more, often in the house. Get timber off the ground and away from buildings.

A country tip

Keep a cleared, mowed strip between the veld and your house and outbuildings, and don't let long grass grow up against the walls. It slows rodents, cuts down on ticks near the house and gives scorpions fewer places to hide.

What it costs and why

Larger properties cost a little more because there's more ground and more buildings to cover. Beyond that, the price depends on the pest: wasps or ants are small jobs, rats need stations and a follow-up, and termite soil treatment around a house is the most involved. Pre-treatment for new building is quoted on the slab size. You'll see a guide "from" price on this page, and you can read how our pest control is priced before you call.

We also cover pest control in Cullinan and Bronkhorstspruit further east, and our full list of services is on the pest control Johannesburg page.

Questions we get asked

Do you really come out as far as Rayton?

Yes. We serve Rayton, Cullinan and the farms and smallholdings around them from Johannesburg, with service within 24 hours.

How much does termite treatment cost in Rayton?

It depends on the type of termite and the size of the building or lawn. Harvester termites in a lawn cost less to treat than subterranean termites in a house. Our price guide shows a starting price, and we quote after inspecting.

Do you pre-treat the soil for new houses on plots?

Yes. We treat the soil before the slab is cast and issue a treatment certificate, which is the most effective time to protect a building.

How do I keep scorpions out of the house?

Clear rubble and woodpiles away from the walls, fit sweeps under doors, keep a cleared strip around the house, and have a barrier treatment applied around the foundations.

Is your treatment safe for my dogs?

Yes, used correctly. Keep dogs off treated surfaces until they're dry, and rodent bait is kept inside lockable stations dogs can't open.

How long does a termite treatment last?

A soil treatment protects the treated zone for years, and our termite treatments carry a 5-year guarantee with a certificate. Disturbing the soil with building work can break the barrier, so let us know if you renovate.
